Wings sign D Ian White to 2-year, $5.75m contract

Don't know a ton about him, but seems like a decent signing at a good price.

He's not gonna replace Rafalski's offense really, but with him, Commodore, and Ericsson, at least there's not some options on the bottom three of the blueline, and potential for guys to step up.

This is a good signing, kinda takes a bit of the sting off Ericsson's overpayment. White will not single-handedly replace all of Rafalski's offense, but he has above average offensive instincts, a heavy shot from the point/high slot, and is a right-handed shot, which fits right into the role he is expected to play. Not bad defensively either.

Now, with the remaining ~6mil in cap space, lets bring in a sniper for the top 6, go into camp with 15 forwards, 8 defensemen, and let the best lineup work itself out.

If they DO decide to sign another forward Arnott is really the only worthwhile one left that I can see. He was awful with the Devils last year, but everything about the Devils was awful last year.

Or the Wings could not sign a 37 year old forward who has been declining the last 3 seasons.

This signing is what the French would call "Le Insurance". If Kenny can't land a legit top 2 offensive d-man via trade he can sit tight for a bit longer and wait for an opportunity.

Agreed.

There just wasn't much out there, and this is a bargain signing, especially compared to the horrible deals we've seen in the past couple of days.

The offense will have to be more productive to compensate for the loss of Rafi, but it can be done. As the back-end stands now, it could be adequate with the addition of the yet unnamed Defensive Coach. This is key, because I think much of what frustrated us about Ericsson probably had much to do with bad coaching by McCrimmon. It certainly didn't help. So, there is the potential for a good unit here.

White was a total dick in junior and has been on four NHL teams in 18 months.

Coincidentally, we're getting him for a bargain.

Joyce also reports that prior to going to Leaf training camp, White asked Broncos GM Dean Chynoweth if he could skate with the Broncos, "then proceeded to carouse around town." Chynoweth's farewell to White was marked by the GM throwing White's equipment out the back door of the arena when White didn't show up for a practice.

He's 5'10" (on skates), 170 pounds. For the fight slappies out there - don't forget about White's fight with Kovalchuk. One of four fights he's had in 401 NHL games.

So he didn't get along with a coach and he's more of a defender than a fighter. Got it.

More than one coach clearly didn't see value in keeping him lately (four NHL teams in 18 months).

But go ahead and plan the parade route.

White is listed at 5'-10" and 200ibs. If he's only 5'-10 (on skates), that means Lidstrom is only 5'-6" (on skates).

Get your facts straight.

I think the defense has been shored up nicely. Resigning Big E certainly helps the continuity (the salary debate for him is in another thread) and gives a nice big body (with something to prove). Commodore gives them a solid 5-6-7 guy with size and grit (also with something to prove). Ian White gives them what I'd call a very versatile, smart, defenseman. Add Kindl and Janik to the mix (I'm thinking Brendan Smith is going to be the #1 guy in GR this year) who will certainly push the last pairing for playing time and I'm feeling pretty good for one day after July 1.
