DSM 114 Report post Posted February 8, 2013 (edited) If at some point this season the Red Wings get all of their players back from injury and send Tatar and Lashoff (and now Andersson) back to GR, they will have 26 players on their roster. Obviously, they'd need to get down to 23, which means 3 players have to be moved out somehow. Joey McDonald is a lock to eventually hit waivers and possibly go to GR, but what 2 skaters should go? Should the Red Wings keep 14 forwards and 7 dmen or run a 13/8 combo? I'd just like to hear everyone's REALISTIC opinions on who should go and why. And by realistic I mean no impossible NHL13 scenarios, and you have to obviously know that Holland is not going to waive or dump Cleary or Quincey. And also I don't want to see the words "buy" and "out" next to each other either, as you can't buy players out until June. Here's my opinion: I think it would be smart to go with a 13 forward and 8 defensemen setup. The Red Wings are very deep up front with 18 forwards that can skate in the NHL, not counting Sheahan. On D, the Red Wings really only have 9 NHL dmen. So I would think that no dmen get waived. I have to think that at this point Mursak has to be at the bottom of the forward depth chart. The guy can't stay healthy and the Red Wings really haven't been able to see what he can offer, while every other bottom 6 player has found there place (along with Tatar). After that I think it would come down to Emmerton, Miller or Eaves. Emmerton is probably the most obvious choice, but the Wings are kind of the thin at center, and have a glut of guys that can play on the wing. Miller and Eaves always seem to be in and out of the lineup depending on who's healthy, but I think that the Red Wings like that Eaves can fill in on the 2nd line and the PP, while still killing penalties and playing on the 3rd/4th line. So for me, it would come down to these players, in this order: 1. MacDonald (obviously) - I do hope he would clear tho, so we still have strong depth in net. 2. Mursak 3. Emmerton or Miller Who would you guys pick? Edited February 8, 2013 by DSM
Guest mjtm77 Report post Posted February 8, 2013 I can gurantee Emerton will stay, he has progressed from last year and he now looks like he can acually play up with the big boys. I would like to see drew miller gone, but who knows.....
Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted February 8, 2013 Given the Red Wings' track record, I'd say it'll be Mursak and Emmerton going. Miller's UFA and I think he's on his way out during the off-season, but I feel like Detroit will keep him over Emmerton. I'm also curious to see who the odd man out on defense is when they're healthy - Kindl or Huskins (assume it's him).
amato 3,210 Report post Posted February 8, 2013 i'm going to take a wild guess and say there won't be any point this season that we have over 23 NHL regulars uninjured.... i hope i'm wrong.

Guest Playmaker Report post Posted February 9, 2013 It's a big if...You're assuming that each of the players will get healthy and that no other injuries will occur...I find that extremely unlikely and a bit too early to speculate and worry about...

Him and Ericsson are the only 2 Dmen we have shutting guys down at the moment. And I really hope Huskins stays next year too. Good team guy by the looks of it and he blocks more shots than the rest of the D put together.
GoalieManPat 1,007 Report post Posted February 9, 2013 Huskins has been one of if not our best defender over this season. It would be silly to sit him. I see him used more in a rotation than being outright scratched.
WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted February 9, 2013 I would be against Miller being the odd man out. 3rd/4th liners who are amongst the leaders in shorthanded ice time on your team and pot 10 goals a season are ideal. Yes, the PK has terrible. But I blame that on a new coach implementing their own system the past couple years and the retirement of Lidstrom more so than a decline in Miller's abilities. He's only 28.

I say promote Miller and Emdog up the lines and let Bertuzzi and Samuelsson ay 4th line for 5 minutes a night. Problem is our stupid GM has already sunk 5 mil into those guys, so Babcock cant do whats best for the team.
PROBIE4PREZ 58 Report post Posted February 9, 2013 Mursak - Injury prone. Not built for the bottom 6 and wont crack the top 6. Eaves - I personally like him and his game, but I think Miller has a edge on him.

Barrie 900 Report post Posted February 11, 2013 I wouldn't think Sammy has a spot when he's ready to go. Bert may have a hard time cracking the lineup too. Gotta love the enegry Tatar brings. With how well our D has been playing lately, think how much better it'll be when Smith is back. We're starting to see how well we've drafted the last few years in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Anyone who thinks Holland isn't an amazing GM is crazy! Emdog aint going anywhere. For once we agree on something
Richdg 267 Report post Posted February 11, 2013 This depends on several things. 1. can we ever get 100% healthy? Not sure that happens. We have a lot of older guys and smaller guys. Add in some inury prone guys-has Colavaico every played a full healthy season? Just not sure it happens. 2. if by chance it does happen, some of it will depend on where we are as a team. If we are still fighting for the PO's you will see some moves to improve. If we are out you may see some salary dumps.
Guest RedWingsDad Report post Posted February 11, 2013 (edited) Emdog aint going anywhere. heh, Emdog? For the record, I don't think that Emmerton has accomplished anything noteworthy or otherwise endeared himself to the fan-base in any way that would merit a nick name. I would like to see us drop Emmerton, Mursak, and Abby. Unfortunately, Abby will stay on the team because he provides a bit of sandpaper amongst a bunch of softies... besides that, he doesn't impress. I think he should be worried for his job should we obtain another 'gritty' forward. Edited February 11, 2013 by RedWingsDad

DSM 114 Report post Posted February 11, 2013 I'm all for Emmerton staying on the big club. I think there's a reason why the 4th line has stayed the same almost all season. Miller, Emmerton and Tootoo have been a very good 4th line combo for the Wings this season.
