Great behind the scene story about 'respect' in the NHL among veterans (even those on different teams).

FYI.. I liked Avery simple because he was.. un... predictable.

I think it also shows a small amount of respect on behalf of Avery to sit down after Hull said this and shut his yap. I was not a fan of Avery in the slightest, he's on my list of guys like Barnaby that I just wanted to see knock off the antics and play the game.

Regardless, he was a lucky guy to be on that team during that time and be surrounded by such epicness. Good read, thanks for posting it.

The comments section for that was hilarious.
And Avery is a d-bag.

Just a great read I can't stand the Avalanche but a lot of respect goes to Sakic, the guy lead by example and was a class act.

Cool story. Joe Sakic 100% deserved that kind of respect. I hated the mid-90s Avs with all my heart, but their captain was the big exception. Nothing but respect (and fear, because he was always clutch against us) for him. An incredible, classy player.

There are very few guys on Rival teams I respect, and even fewer I like.

I can respect the hell out of Jeter or Bernie Williams or Mo Rivera (as a sox fan), but that doesn't me I like them.

Joe Sakic on the other hand, I wish I could say a bad word about him, I wish I could have a strong hatred for him.

But I can't, the best I can muster is a bad Snow Blower joke.

That guy was a mirror image of our #19, IMO!

"When I was looking for a captain, I wanted a guy with the Red Wings crest tattooed on his chest," said former Detroit coach Jacques Demers, who named Yzerman captain in 1986. "Steve Yzerman was that guy."

“Told him if he wasn't ultra-competitive he couldn't come here. If he didn't bring it every day he couldn't come here, because he was going to hate it if he didn't, dislike the coach and dislike playing here.
“It's real straightforward. If you don't do it right, you're not happy here." Babcock

Sakic is a classy guy. I miss guys like him and Stevie in the game.

Nice story, thanks for posting. Good little story about the linesman in one of the comments below the story as well.

Yzerman....Sakic....Oates....Lidstrom....Messier....Gretzky....

....Crosby...ugh, what happened to the NHL?

Always liked Joe, he never got involved with the physical part of the rivalry, and barely ran his mouth off about it...
