The Secret 304 Report post Posted January 21, 2015 (edited) This is why you have never heard of New Zealand and SOuth African hockey teams: http://youtu.be/oWdvBlx3Twk Maybe of they spent more time learning the game and less time doing their pregame dance you may possibly know who they were?! (I doubt it though) Edited January 21, 2015 by The Secret
Richdg 267 Report post Posted January 21, 2015 NZ teams do that dance for every national team. basketball, soccer, rugby-where it started, hockey etc.... Both countries are small population wise. NZ has about 4 million total, while SA has many more only about 4 million have the moeny and facilities to play. But SA has produced a few pro players. Olf Kolzig was a south african and our former prospect Willie Coetzee was also one.
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted January 21, 2015 While Kolzig and Coetzee were both born in SA, I think it's a bit of a stretch to suggest that SA produced those players. Kolzig moved to Canada when he was 3 and Coetzee moved to Canada when he was 4. 1 Son of a Wing reacted to this
kiwi wingnut 33 Report post Posted January 21, 2015 You've probably not heard of our hockey down here because we have maybe 1500 players countrywide, though it is one of the fastest growing sports. The haka itself is a traditional war challenge, performed by the Maori, our indigenous people. We're pretty proud of our culture hence its incorporation into the sporting arena. I was privileged enough to perform the haka when I played for the NZ lacrosse team at the World Cup in Canada 2006. (Another minority sport with about 150 senior players in total!). There's the occasional uproar here about the overuse of the haka, but I reckon it's pretty cool, shows off our little country and gets people like yourselves who wouldn't otherwise know who we are talking about us! 4 joshy207, Hockeymom1960, wings4thecup06 and 1 other reacted to this
hooon 1,089 Report post Posted January 21, 2015 I think it is pretty awesome that these traditionally non-hockey nations have folks that play the game. And that "dance" was pretty badass as well.
