The Holiday tradition: 2016 Draft thoughts.....

Terrible pick. Holland likes to do this. Makes a good trade with the Yotes. Then instead of taking a better player goes out and takes a reach. Even if Cholowski makes it some day-5-6 years from now, others that were on the board will already be in the NHL producing. Oh well. Terrible pick.

Even with Chychrun - it'll be 3 to 5 years before we know what we got.

But yeah - this Cholowski was probably deemed a 2nd rounder by many GMs.

Get to watch Cholowski at Saint Cloud state!

The best thing for this kid is to develop at his own pace, and NCAA gives these young men ample time to do so (even though DD was never drafted - playing college hockey allowed him the time to mature).

Yeah I would have rather went with Gauthier or Jones in that spot, but Cholowski could develop into a nice 2nd pairing. He may not be done growing either, plus he is going to a good program who will develop him properly.

This.

Obviously I'm no NHL Scout but it really seemed like there were safer picks with just as high of ceilings on the board. I felt like I should ha known after that trade that he'd blow the pick. Feels like Kindl...I really hope i'm wrong. Larkin was "Helm with hands" and no one really thought he would do what he did.

Cholowski was the next D after Stanley. Seems the organization just really wanted a defenseman. My philosophy is always best-player-available (other than goalie), but I can understand the rationale. Our prospect pool is very thin on defense.

I wonder if having the two, second round, picks might allow KH to take a flyer on Day. Then best forward available with the second.

Really, really hope so. Hes got all the tools to be a stud, he just needs to figure out the mental side of the game.

Yeah, great trade to get rid of Datsyuk's contract and also pick up another 2nd rounder, while moving back just 4 spots... Unfortunately though, that pick couldn't have been worse (as it looks right now)...

I said long ago that I wanted either McLeod or Bean (assuming Chychrun wouldn't have been available...) and if they were gone, I was hoping to trade back and pick Jones. Either one of Jones or Gauthier would have been great picks there, hell I could name at least 10 players I would have taken before this Cholowski kid...

Of course I hope he becomes a huge steal, but I really can't see this kid developing into anything more than a 2nd / 3rd pairing defenseman... Prove us wrong Kenny...

You don't take a defenseman that far off the table unless they actually seen something special in the kid... Here's to hoping... If we absolutely had to take a defenseman there (I don't think we should have), I would have much rathered see us take Johansen...

It's tough to predict defensemen. College hockey could help this kid. I trust the scouts to be honest. They must have seen something in him that they didn't in the remaining forwards. He'll likely be a late bloomer. He looked like he was 12 years old lmao.

I thought I heard that at the mid point last year, McKenzie & friends NBC rankings or whatever had Chowlowski ranked in the 50s or so and he ended up at 25ish on the final rankings.. That progress is at least encouraging. Hopefully he continues to develop at a good rate. It'll be interesting to follow him vs Chychrun's development.

Well the nice thing about Cholowski, as Holland mentioned already, is that he has up to 4 years to season in college. He already improved nicely over the past season and now takes a step up to college hockey. Yes, we need high-quality d-men in the near future, but it'll be nice to have a kid ripening at the college level (also no worry about having to have him signed). Also, in terms of having a d-man who could step in sooner.... I feel there were only really 3 players who fit that criteria; Juolevi, Sergachev, and Bean, and they all were drafted before the 16 spot.

I don't think Holland and Co. were as excited about Chychrun as he had injury issues as well as struggled with his play this past season. Time will tell if he turns it around and time will tell how Cholowski develops. We tend to draft well through the later rounds, so let's see how we handle our 2nd round picks and beyond them.

Also, I feel if this move allows us to get Stamkos, long-term, it was well worth it. Chychrun is not expected to be any more than a top 4 d-man, same as Cholowski. One just might need a little more time to develop/ripen.

I'm certain our amateur scout/s saw something - some 'raw' talent I'd say...NCAA is his best option - he'll get plenty of time in the weight room, and enough dorm food to feed half of China for a year.

With the 'Teletubbies' becoming popular again I hope we don't see another 'Sheahan' incident

He really rised up a lot from the midterm rankings and they said he can grow even more since his brother is 6'4 ... If he turns out to be a Good 2-3 dman that can put up some points I'll take it

We all know it ain't easy getting a number 1 dman

When I seen McLeod and then Bean go off the board, I was pissed... Then when I seen Chychrun drop to us, I was ecstatic... Then when I seen us trading the pick, I was pissed... Then when I seen what we traded the pick for, I was ecstatic... Then when I seen Fabbro go off the board I was slightly pissed... Then when I seen the players left on the board I was ecstatic... Then when I seen the player that we picked over all these other kids, I was beyond pissed... Now after 12 hours and sleeping on it, reading a lot more about him, I'm somewhat okay with the pick...

I'm not near as upset about us passing over Chychrun as I am with the selection we made in place of it... Hopefully we have a successful day two today and we can land a couple steals in the second round...

Ya I was like you yesterday , i thought for sure were drafting chychrun since the wings usually draft players that slide down ... Then I see the trade and think we got rid of datsyuks contract , kept our 1st and got a 2nd and gave up no prospects ? I was pumped

Then I'm like ok fabbro is out there ...... f***kk ... Ok this Stanley kid at 6'7 can be worth looking at ... f***kk lol

I was with friends and predicted we'd take rubstov cause the wings always say they pick the best player Available ... Anyways regardless we need help at d and it was the smart move and we added another pick and got rid of pavel , so it worked out

I also liked johansen but can't complain

Ya forgot to add Bastian , we need some guys like him

Didn't know much about pu till I got my hands on the hockey news finally and apparently he was played much being on a deep London team and scouts think he's gonna play a lot next year and put up numbers

London always develop a lot of good players so he might be one to keep an eye out for and he just turned 18 a few weeks ago

Bastian is my number one guy at 46... I hope he slides...

Ya hed be a good pick up man .... I hope we can somehow add another pick, it's been a while I hope we land Lucas carlsson , could be cause I got a soft spot for swedes , but I like that he went undrafted and rose to 15 this year and I liked what I seen on YouTube

Koivula also intrigues me being 17 and like 6'4 , seen clips online as well
