SY Press Conference - New Coach

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

If anyone didn't catch the press conference today, the only takeaways I saw were:

1. Yzerman wants to hire a coach soon - before the draft

2. He said he finds it hard to hire someone he doesn't know and hasn't worked with before. Big tip of that hat right there if you ask me.

There's a ton of experienced coaches he's worked with over the years on team Canada and the bolts/wings/griffins/crunch. Big names like Babcock, Julien, Tippett, Richards etc, all the way down to guys who are now coaching in europe or the CHL. Not going to go through all those names.

But if he wants a fresh up and coming coach he's worked with in the past here's basically the names:

  • Rob Zettler - hired by SY to coach Syracuse. Now an assistant coach for Tampa.
  • Benoit Groulx - hired by SY to coach Syracuse. Still there.
  • Derek Lalonde - hired in SY's last year with Tampa when he was only senior advisor.
  • Jeff Halpern - hired by SY as assistant coach for Syracuse. Was promoted to asst coach for Tampa in SY's last year.

Technically he know's Lane Lambert from playing days - but he's never worked with the guy.

He better hurry. You really should have your HC on board before the draft. That could influence draft picks and draft day trades.

Should be announced between the finals and the draft I presume.

Yesterday morning while listening to the NHL Network on Sirius XM Jeff Marek mentioned Bolts assist coach Derek Lalonde would likely be on Yzerman's radar...He looks like a shoe-in to me.....

Remember when the media ran with the Lane Lambert angle and that became a thing in the minds of fans?

Well they really seem to be running with John Tortorella now. Where there's smoke there might be fire...

If Torts is a thing I could see him coming here for max 2-3 years. Just to bust balls and instill discipline. Set the tone of the team going forward. In the meantime we keep rebuilding. Then Steve moves on to a 3rd coach.

Derek Lalonde is a PHENOMENAL person. He was a gem while with the Walleye and really turned things around here.

His personality is outstanding. Super approachable, genuine. The kind of person you work hard for because you feel like you're letting your parent down otherwise. Not an iron fist by any means, but you can tell he cherishes relationships and performance.

“I find it difficult to hire people you don’t really know and that you haven’t worked with or somebody that you worked closely with who knows kind of the way I want things done or the way I do things,” Yzerman said. “That’s a bit of a challenge. I’m going to have to overcome that. Obviously, this is an important decision. I don’t want to rule anything out or exclude anyone because they have coached, or they haven’t coached, or they’ve not been in North America or whatnot.”

Sure but I kinda got the impression he was just covering his tracks there.

>I like ppl I know and have worked with, but of course I'll do my due diligence and consider everyone.

Who knows though maybe I'm wrong. I thought at want he also said something along the lines of "I've already said too much".

Why do I read this like he does not want somebody thats too close to him?

Everybody seems to interpret this as he wants somebody he knows well and knows him well.

Remove everything between “I find it difficult to hire people” and ”or”.

I see your point, but I don't think he meant it that way.

"I'm not hiring someone I don't know, but also not hiring someone who knows me."

If he only wants to hire people he knows and worked with, the list must be pretty short.

He's worked with a lot of coaches. The full list of guys, that aren't retired or already have NHL HC gigs, is like 30 names long.

Yeah but guys that are actually in consideration for the job I mean.

Every coach Yzerman has ever worked with, except those he just fired:

  • Mike Babcock - 59 - HC Univ of Saskatchewan
  • Paul MacLean - 64 - Senior Advisor Toronto Maple Leafs
  • Todd McLellan - 54 - HC Los Angeles Kings
  • Andy Murray - 71 - Unemployed
  • Gerard Gallant - 58 - HC New York Rangers
  • Mike Johnston - 65 - GM/HC Portland Winterhawks WHL
  • Ken Hitchcock - 70 - Consultant St Louis Blues
  • Pat Burns - Dead
  • Craig MacTavish - 63 - HC Lausanne Switzerland
  • Brad McCrimmon - Dead
  • Jacques Lemaire - 76 - Special Assignment Coach New York Islanders
  • Lindy Ruff - 62 - HC New Jersey Devils
  • Guy Boucher - 50 - Unemployed
  • Wayne Flemming - Dead
  • Dan Lacroix - 53 - HC Moncton Wildcats QMJHL
  • Martin Raymond - 54 - AGM Gatineau Olympiques QMJHL
  • Jon Cooper - 54 - HC Tampa Bay Lightning
  • Doug Shedden - 61 - HC ERC Ingolstadt DEL
  • Dave Tippett - 60 - Unemployed
  • Barry Trotz - 59 - HC New York Islanders
  • Rick Bowness - 67 - HC Dallas Stars
  • George Gwozdecky - 68 - HC Valor Christian High School
  • Claude Julien - 62 - Unemployed
  • Steve Thomas - 58 - Unemployed
  • Brad Lauer - 55 - HC Edmonton Oil Kings WHL
  • Todd Richards - 55 - AC Nashville Predators
  • Jeff Halpern - 46 - AC Tampa Bay Lightning
  • Derek Lalonde - 49 - AC Tampa Bay Lightning
  • Greg Ireland - 56 - HC Bolzano Italy
  • Mike Stothers - 60 - AC Anaheim Ducks
  • Curt Fraser - 64 - Unemployed
  • Trent Yawney - 56 - AC Los Angeles Kings
  • Rob Zettler - 54 - AC Tampa Bay Lightning

  • Alex Tanguay - 42 - AC Detroit Red Wings

  • Lalonde
  • Groulx

Long shot: Everyone else
