Gotta say that strategy of holding onto 3 goalies has paid off. Imagine where this team would be if Lyon was claimed on waivers.

i guess the only trouble is, 50% of us have been saying ride the Lyon since October, and only now we are doing it.

Something something Derek isn't a very good coach.

Lyon is good with us because he's not a spaz.  The goals that should go in ALWAYS go in, but the goals that should NOT go in rarely go in.  He's in a solid position 99% of the time, so he makes a save on a shot he should save 99% of the time.  Nobody is ever going to consider Alex Lyon a Vezina candidate.  But they're also rarely going to say "Our goalie cost us that one."  Husso may be a better netminder when at his best, but he's only at his best 10% of the time.  We need the guy that's in position and has the puck accidentally hit him over the guy that's spazzing himself out of position and having to flash a blocker to short hop a deflected bouncing puck from going in.

This is some serious, real goalie talk.  So if you're not ready for that, this may not be the thread you should reply in.

Do you guys think that in general goalies tend to be better into their 30s than forwards and defensemen? Like, is it more likely that an average goalie will still be playing at an average level into his 30s than an average forward/defenseman?

Without looking at any numbers or ages, i would think in theory goalies age better. Just because they dont have to deal with the breakdown in skating speed or take punishing hits through ourlt their career. But really I have no clue.

Howard was pretty reliable up until 35, when he hit a sudden wall. But i wonder how much of that was just him seeing his age, the state of the team, and not caring anymore, and letting himself go. It was rumored he and Mike Green were in the bar everynight in those last years. And he obviously pulled a Bufflin and became a ham planet.

Maybe he had a few more solid years on the hood otherwise

That's more or less my take on it too. Goalies age better because it's not as hard on their bodies. I started thinking about it because I was reading an article about John Gibson being under contract for two more years (he's 30 now) and thought "that contract SHOULD age just fine". But maybe my take is all wrong.

Goalies take longer to develop, so in theory, they should hit their prime later than skaters. So 30 for a goalie is not unheard of to hit their prime. And they play fewer games, do way more standing around and waiting, and suffer less physical damage to the head and body. So I think a goalie, if he stays fit, can still be effective well into their late 30s.
