Thurs morning coffee thoughts

We have 5 of 6 at home the 1 away is at Montreal currently having won 2 in row after last night.

Do we want this team to go on a heater?

Lets put on the red colored shades(you all have a pair!)

Say we win 4 of the next 6 which gets us back into the middle of the pack and maybe at the cusp of WC2 by end of December. Then we do decent enough in Jan/Feb/early March to keep us in the mix for WC2.

Are we going to be happy or sad with that scenario? Seems like it would put us in a similar spot as last year in no man's land come trade deadline. Not crappy enough to sell, not good enough to buy for a run so we get more meh. End up getting a mid level pick in the 1st and potentially saving Derek's  job.

Now take the red colored shades off as those things can hurt your perspective.

Who from here was this guy?

If we make the playoffs because of unsustainably high levels of play from guys who aren't going to be around long (Kane, Tarasenko, Chiarot, Talbot, Gustafsson, etc.) then it's probably a bad thing. But if Larkin, Seider, Raymond, Edvinsson, Kasper, Debrincat can somehow drag us into the playoffs you'd have to think it's a good thing. Don't we WANT those guys to be team leaders who excel at playoff level hockey?

What would an equivalent trade package from the Wings have been for Kakko?  The cost seems very reasonable and the reward could be great.  I think Yzerman is Uber conservative... and it's hurting us.

I would think that since Borgen only has 2 points in 33 games played that Lagesson would be equivalent? Both 28, Lagesson is a bit larger is stature. The draft picks we definitely could've matched.

Either way, Yzerman is not going to make this team any better this season. That has been shown by not acquiring any of the players that have been on the move recently that would've definitely made the team better. He is probably going to ride this team throughout and see if they can squeak in.

As mentioned above, Yzerman could've matched the Kakko trade.

Real Trade: Kakko for Boren, 25 3rd, 25 6th

US: Kakko for Lagesson, 25 3rd (we have 2), 25 6th

Fowler trade:

Real Trade: Fowler, 4th for a 2nd, J. Biakabatuka (who we once had)

US: Fowler, 4th for a 2nd, E. Viro (or K. Aucoin)

Trouba trade:

Real Trade: Trouba for a Conditional 4th, U. Vaakanainen

US: Trouba for a conditional 4th, again Viro or Aucoin

Jiricek trade:

Reak Trade: Jiricek and a 5th for D. Hunt, a 2025 1st round pick, 2026 3rd round pick, 2026 4th round pick, and 2027 2nd round pick

US: Jiricek and a 5th for (again) Viro or Aucoin, a 2025 1st round pick(protected), 2026 3rd round pick, 2026 4th round pick, and 2027 2nd round pick

Liljegrin trade:

Real Trade: Liljegrin for M. Benning, a 2026 6th round pick and a Conditional 2025 3rd round pick

US: Liljegrin for Lagesson, a 2026 6th round pick and a Conditional 2025 3rd round pick

Any one of, or combination of these trades would make our team better. For salary cap issues, you just waive players that suck or try to move some salary out to others.

Hey, gang. A bit of personal news here. I’ve decided to retire from TV at the end of this Red Wings season.

LA has put Arthur Kaliyev on waivers. Any interest? I am not sure he'd make it to Detroit's position, considering that they have risen to 9th from the bottom now. 23 years old, $875K. He'll be an RFA this summer. Could excel with some of our other young players. I's like to see Yzerman put a claim in on him at least.

I saw that too, but the knock on him has always been that despite his obvious offensive instincts he's still pretty slow and soft. He's a poor man's Thomas Vanek. I'm good on that guy.

I'm not really interested in anymore pantywaists. We've got Debrincat, Raymond, Berggren, and Kane on the team already. I appreciate that some of them are kinda feisty, but that's not a substitute for big AND feisty. We need guys who can play a power game and score some goals. I like a few of the Buffalo guys, plus Lawson Crouse for that reason.

Separately we need another top four stud on defense. Given that Chiarot can play either side and ASP is a righty I prefer a LHD here. Probably Byram to pair with Seider and Edvinsson can go with Chiarot on the 2nd pair. Figure out the 3rd pair with the best of the rest.

Might have to pull off a big trade for both Byram and Cozins.

I can’t remember a trade comparable to something like that. It would blow my mind. You’d give a fortune to get them both and may not even end up with anything better than STL got for free when they offer sheeted Broberg and Holloway.

No, were not stopping at McDefendolds. We have perfectly good Buium and Wallinder at home.

So the offense is finally humming, the powerplay is still good, the PK is league average under McClellan, and the goaltending is holding up. We dominated a bad team last night, just like we should have. But we still gave up 3 goals. The defense needs bolstered. We do that and I think we’ve got a real good chance at winning our divisional games and making the playoffs.
