91 to the rafters

I hate it. Sure he was an amazing player. Nobody is debating that. But he was also a poopy pants baby who left the team to make less money elsewhere because he was butt hurt that he didn't get more accolades (beyond his three Stanley Cups, two Selke's, and one Hart Trophy). Boo hoo. I always liked that for the most part the players in the rafters in Detroit where exceptional players AND great team guys/guys who cherished playing for Detroit. Fedorov was exceptional no doubt, but he never had any great love for Detroit until after the fact.

I genuinely don't think this would even be happening if our team didn't suck so much right now.

Hate it.

This. SY is in desperation mode, and the Illitch family wants attention away from a failing rebuild.

I've always felt that Fedorov (like the Grind line, Holmstrom, Probert, and maybe a few others) should be given a "Sergei Fedorov" night at the arena and be memorialized at the stadium in some way. Maybe a ring of honor or a walk-of-fame or something. But I just don't think he deserved to have his number retired.

I think Chris Ilitch is a decent enough owner, but not a great one. His dad had principles, sand the hockey club was a point of pride for him. Both of which showed through in his decision making. Being a nepo baby, Chris doesn't have the same attachment to the team. He runs it like a business, and when business is bad hockey clubs drum up things like this to put butts in seats. His dad would never have allowed Fedorov's number to be retired because Sergei did Mike Ilitch dirty. And there's no way that Mafioso Mike was gonna pump your tires if you f*cked him. It's the principle of the thing and I liked that. Why should the Red Wings give a sh*t about Fedorov when he so publicly didn't give a sh*t about them when he made the decision to leave like he did?

I agree with all this. Checkout what I just posted in the offseason thread. It came to the forefront of my mind because of this 91 thing. Chris is definately treating his clubs like a pure business entity.

To be fair to the Wings org... it's also the Centenial season. And it's cool that they're using that to try and do some special stuff and make a big marketing push. 91 to the rafters, hockeytown back on center ice, new alt jersey.

I'm a fan of our tradition, so it's not exactly enticing to me, but hey, its something new to at least talk about.

I'd rather remove the garbage patch...

I am torn about Federov.

He was a big part of the cup runs...then he left for of all teams the Ducks and less $$ seemed like a slap in Mr I's face. I think Feds wanted the Hollywood celebrity life. Be funny if someone asked Yzerman if he knows the backstory about Fed leaving. Stevie doing the same thing when asked about Walman..not going to discuss that!!

AGREE to bolded in a big way but then again I am just an old fart yelling at the kids to get off my lawn....new alt jersey !!!! WTF !!! Whats wrong with the Red or While one!!!

Yeah one of my fav things about the Wings is that the uni was sacred. Only minimal design updates since the teams inception. No alt.

Don't fix what's not broken.

Then Chris takes over and now we have ads on our sweaters and helmets. An alt jersey. And Mike's standards on jersey retirement have dropped.

Well played Chris well played

From this article https://www.freep.com/story/sports/columnists/carlos-monarrez/2025/08/20/ilitch-should-have-felt-betrayed-but-fedorov-ceremony-buries-hatchet/85729839007/

"Fedorov was a marvel and watching him was often worth the price of admission alone. And if you want to attend the ceremony in January, you’ll have to pony up because the ticket is part of a five-game package. And it’s only fitting that it comes against the Hurricanes."
