bcwingsfan19 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2007 Edmonton is having a hard time getting free agents to come so over-paying is probably one of their only options.

Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted July 12, 2007 This makes the Pitkanen deal look horrible. Smith and Souray wouldve been good together.
Heaton 1 Report post Posted July 12, 2007 This makes the Pitkanen deal look horrible. Smith and Souray wouldve been good together. Horrible? Pitkanen is like 23 years old, any time you can get a player of that caliber for what they gave up, you do it.
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted July 12, 2007 Horrible? Pitkanen is like 23 years old, any time you can get a player of that caliber for what they gave up, you do it. I'd rather have Smith. Plus the oilers also gave up Lupul who didnt have a great season , but has potential to do great things.
oilandwingsfan 3 Report post Posted July 12, 2007 I'd rather have Smith. Plus the oilers also gave up Lupul who didnt have a great season , but has potential to do great things. he's going to score like 30-40 goals in Philly now....
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted July 12, 2007 So , what does the Oilers defence look like now. Pitkanen, Souray, Staios, Smid, Green, Tarnstrom/Gresbeshkov. Not bad.
Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted July 12, 2007 Well now. There goes the last big name. No surprises here. Panic move by Lowe because he couldn't lure anyone else up there. Not surprisingly that they majorly overpaid for one of the worst defensive defenseman in the league.
spydrwebb 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2007 reportedly signed for 5 years, 27-27.5 mill guess that answers my question.

Guest DetroitIan Report post Posted July 12, 2007 After the horrible offseason the Oilers have had. This is definitely a good move. They really needed to do something. I wonder how much they overpaid him though.
StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted July 12, 2007 I would say defense wins championships but hes not known for his defense. He'll be an ok addition but is it just a desperate move?
interminded 1 Report post Posted July 12, 2007 Looks like a good move to me. Don't see this as a panic move.
Cicada 4 Report post Posted July 12, 2007 lol Roloson in goal. Pitkanen and Souray #1 D pair... err... any bets on the oil shipping over 400 goals?
wingslogo19 281 Report post Posted July 12, 2007 Now Souray will be the leading scorer for the Oilers
Guest Crymson Report post Posted July 12, 2007 This makes the Pitkanen deal look horrible. Smith and Souray wouldve been good together. Smith is getting older and is on the downside, and he has zero offensive ability whatsoever. That doesn't work well in the NHL these days. So , what does the Oilers defence look like now. Pitkanen, Souray, Staios, Smid, Green, Tarnstrom/Gresbeshkov. Not bad. If Swiss Cheese works well as a defensive scheme, then I guess one might call this group average. Manoir 70 Report post Posted July 12, 2007 I think it's a good fit. He was -28 last year, the temperature in Edmonton is usually around -25 to -30 celsius in winter.

YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted July 12, 2007 I'd rather have Smith. Plus the oilers also gave up Lupul who didnt have a great season , but has potential to do great things. What? Pitkanen is 10 years younger, the same size as Smith, uses his body and loves to play physical like Smith, is a great skater with speed, decent defensively for his age, had 13 goals, 46 points in 58 games in his 2nd year in the NHL. And even while having a rough year last year, on a s***ty Philly team no less with no help on D, he still put up 40+ points. Pitkanen is already a stud and hes 23. Hes probably the most complete Dman under 25 not named Dion Phaneuf, and hell only get better. One year on the Philly Suckers and people already forget that hell be a future Norris winner easily. Smith has experience, leadership, and is more gritty than Pitkanen, but Pitkanen still has a ton of time to grow.
