Another ridiculous OHL suspension

Both are legit hockey hits. The difference though is that kids play in the OHL, and Hockey Canada has a moral responsibility to protect them even if that overrides some fundamental game rules. -

Weekend Picks: Week 23 Reminder
GoWings1905 and one other reacted to Dan Bylsma for a post in a topic
I counted up all the weekly scores for what the pooltracker website was saying was the overall top 10 leaders with the dropped weeks taken into consideration. I double checked the numbers then subtracted the 2 lowest scores so we finally have an accurate list of who the leaders are.It was quite time comsuming (that's why I only did 10 for now), I basically had to create a spreadsheet like document to reveal everyone's 2 lowest scores. It also revealed a tight race for the top spot with many players still having a chance to take the number 1 spot. Looks like the cream has risen to the top, atleast temporarily :-) with the two players who placed 1,2 last year in the lead. -

NBC taking cue from NCAA hoops tourney

From yesterday's NY Times... Luring Stanley Cup Viewers With a Torrent of Games By TANZINA VEGA Published: March 14, 2012 TURNING the Stanley Cup playoffs into a must-watch television event lasting for weeks in the spring is no easy feat. Many Americans did not grow up with the game, few know who the players are and watching 10 weeks of playoffs is a big time commitment. But the National Hockey League’s plan to get more viewers is, in fact, to show more games. This year, for the first time, the league will televise every game of the playoffs, which begin April 11 and could last up to 10 weeks, with the last possible day for the final game on June 15. The N.H.L. renewed its media partnership with NBC last year after the company was bought by Comcast, and can now offer programming across multiple platforms including NBC, NBC Sports Network, CNBC and the NHL Network. “We’ve spent the last five years talking about building national scale,” said John Collins, the chief operating officer of the N.H.L. “If you can’t get the games on national television, you’re not going to be able to relate to it.” The league seems to be learning from the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s basketball strategy. In 2010, the N.C.A.A. reached a 14-year deal with CBS and Turner Broadcasting to show the games across multiple networks including CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV — effectively allowing first- and second-round games to be shown nationwide. Before the pact, early-round games were shown only in certain regions — Michigan State fans could watch their team on television but might not have been able to watch, say, Gonzaga or Georgetown. 1 pointObviously the most important injuries to this team are Dats and Lidstrom but to say they are the only injuries that matter is crazy. It's a domino affect. Franzen for instance has not only had to play with 1 new line mate but 2. Injuries change the line combos and the ice time that some of these guys are forced to play. White has looked terrible and should have a better ability to adjust to a new partner but it is difficult to go from playing with argurably the best d man ever to someone new. It is also so much harder to hide struggling guys in the lineup somewhere when you have injuries and they are forced to play. It's the dog days of the season, we are struggling but if you need a cheer up try channelling 07-08..it is a very similar feeling. Things turned out ok that year.

Officials won't let paralyzed player onto ice to celebrate
d2roit reacted to grimace1970 for a post in a topic
damn shame Jesus Tapdancing Christ, what are people thinking? One of the most touching and inspirational things I've ever seen was Vladdy coming onto the ice to celebrate. You want to see an arena full of fans string somebody up?! I can't believe they wouldn't allow this kid to celebrate... He had this one chance in his life - what excuse overrides that?! -
1 pointI don't think they would have been anymore liable than if a regular kid slipped and fell. It's an accepted part of the game and should be covered by insurance. On top of that, a wheelchair basically physically cannot tip over on flat ice.

1 pointMeh. I understand what you are saying and even agree with it, I think this was just an overzealous thing to do and had no place in this circumstance. The big kicker is he was allowed on the ice a few days prior, so there was already a precedent.

Call the team out
Motown4013 reacted to b.shanafan14 for a post in a topic
There is an injury bug every season, around this same time, to a similar degree. Its strange, almost like clockwork you get to late February and players start dropping like flies. Babcock can only play Fil and Z 20 minutes or so a night, less on back-to-backs, so the team sorely needs Hudler to improve or be replaces and Franzen to play like he is capable of. Neither of these are happening. Cleary is either injured and should grab a seat, or healthy and should grab a seat. White should be playing better and the Wings PP should shoot the puck more, things that can happen with the current lineup. The most frustrating thing about Injury Season 2012 isn't the players who are out or up, its the players who continue to slack and waste the efforts of the few players we have going. I'd rather see any of Miller, Abdelkader, or Nyquist up with Val and Hank, over someone like Hudler, at least then they would all be skating hard. It might be time to put all of our eggs in two baskets, so to speak. Let the 4th line continue to suck; there's no helping them. Leave the energy line intact and give them second line minutes. Let the third line become the float line, Hudler-Franzen-Cleary. And give Filppula and Zetterberg young skilled help in Nyquist. Passengers no longer benefit from while hindering the workers, improving the top lines and hopefully forcing the floaters to do less floating. -
1 pointI think people are getting pissy because other teams lose guys and keep rolling. This team loses a guy and falls apart and I think everyone has been pissed about the PP and its not injuries that are causing that problem.

His point was about giving up the short handed goals. I'm pretty sure it was Smith that lost the puck that led to the shorty last night. The guys has 10 NHL games under his belt. It happens. I think that was the point. -

Not to be negative, but this and this. According to FSD's stats department, the Wings powerplay has been dead last in the NHL over the last 40 games. Injuries are part of the problem, but look at the players making the majority of the costly mistakes and breaking the flow; it ain't the call-ups, its the regulars. I have never seen so many shorthanded goals against, and 4 in 6 games!? That's absurd. Used to be getting a powerplay was an advantage. I'm sure things are different in the locker room, and Babcock is not the type of coach to call out players in the media, but the perception is zero-accountability for players who are slacking. "One line playing" is an understatement, since that line is all Filppula and Zetterberg, with Hudler ruining 10 times as many good plays as the ones he finally pots like he did last night. Franzen, who is supposed to be Mr. Clutch, Mr. "He'll play when the chips are down". Well the chips are down with a team among the worst on the road on the verge of losing home ice. He has been a floating pansy before and during the absence of Datsyuk, so much so that Babcock finally reunited Helm-Abdelkader-Miller, finding it better to have your energy line intact instead of relocating hustle to pick up one lazy Mule. If you can't get up for these games when your team needs you, you are an empty sweater. 4 short-handed goals in 6 games? That HAS to be a Wings record. Tear some ass, Babcock. -

The only regular on the powerplay point that is out is Lidstrom. Kronwall, White, and Hudler all got regular time there. Quincey has played the point a lot before he got here, and Smith is only being thrown in because Hudler is just that bad. Let's not make excuses for just how incredibly bad this powerplay has been. -
1 pointNo chance this is true, they're lucky to be where they are now thanks to jimmy and an insane home streak

this. We cannot continue with this injury blaming BS. It is not helping matters but it is not the sole reason we have issues. The issues have been there before the injuries. This team just lacks urgency and consistency much of the time. Babcock needs to find a way to light a fire. Franzen can't hit the broadside of a barn if it was 6 inches in front of him, Happy turn-over Hudler makes better tape to tape passes to the opponent. Lids and Dats can't take the entire team on their shoulders. I really believe this is Lids final year. He is currently in the longest injury stint of his career and the team is struggling in almost all aspects. -
1 pointYep and someone will go down in the playoffs and they will exit that round. A team built like that is a team built to lose when it matters. A team does not give up 4 SHGs in 6 games because Dats and Lids are missing. A team does not forget how to play defense because Lids is hurt. There are bigger problems with this team than injuries.

If you Could Change Five Outcomes in Hockey History
Namingway reacted to lookalive07 for a post in a topic
I don't think I could list five, but I will say I'd have liked the Pittsburgh/Carolina series in 2009 to go more than 4 games. Even though the Wings took the first two games of the series, Pittsburgh had a longer break because of the sweep, and it probably gave them more gas in the tank to do what we all know they ended up doing (I won't reiterate that story). -
1 pointWhat a dick move. I second that, I would of rolled him straight to the ice and right over any son of a ***** who tried to stop me. Insurance my ass. Where was the game played? Was there a true home team, perhaps Hill-Murray? I didn't see it mentioned in the article, or I missed it.
