It's amazing how fast people will turn on a player.
If memory serves, this is more of a basic procedural thing than a real indication that things are going poorly. By filing for arbitration Nyquist forfeits the right to accept an offer sheet from other teams. In other words, he's committing to the Wings by filing.
Today is the deadline to file so the timing is likely a result of that, not something that happened with the Wings. I'm pretty sure this is something players do that's just a backup plan for a worst case scenario. And again, by doing so he cannot accept an offer sheet from another team.

I mean, I don't actually believe we're going to see a roster defenseman moved out before the start of the season. Kenny's not going to move Quincey to clear cap space and a spot for a kid. He's not going to pull a sign-and-trade with Smith. Maybe (maybe) he moves Kindl, but it sounds like Kindl is being treated as a reclamation project, and we all know how much this organization loves reclamation projects. Even if Kenny did trade Kindl, Ouellet/Marchenko would still have to overtake Quincey/Smith. So, Lashoff would be Kindl's logical replacement.
Oh, and there's also the fact that we spent a first-round pick on each of Quincey, Smith, and Kindl. (And McCollum. Who was just re-signed...for reasons no one can seem to understand...) (Curious, that.)

Agreed. It'd be amazing if the Wings pulled off a miracle and landed him but I can't ever see the Kings letting Kopitar go. He should really be wearing the C on that team. I've been saying that he plays a similar game to Zetterberg, only Kopi is actually 6'3" 225 lbs, whereas Z just plays like he is.

With the 1-3-1 power-play setup, using one defenseman, I think it kind of defeats the purpose of having that great left-handed (Kronwall) and right-handed (Green) offensive defensemen on separate units.
I'd love to see two different units with two completely different setups, using the 1-3-1 with one defender on one, and the standard 3-2 with two defenders on the other. I've heard people say in the past that a team wouldn't adopt this strategy because it would be difficult to practice two different setups. I really don't think it would be at all, and I think it would really keep the opposition guessing...
I'd like to see something like this...
    Power-Play Unit 1
    Abdelkader
    Pulkkinen Datsyuk Zetterberg
    Kronwall
    Power-Play Unit 2
    Nyquist Richards Tatar
    Green Smith

    A couple good reads:

    http://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2015/7/2/8886619/red-wings-roster-is-kyle-quincey-the-odd-man-out
I would be ok with trading Kindl or Quincey or Smith to a team that needs to reach the cap floor and giving the vacant spot to Ouellet or Marchenko. Both Ouellet and Marchenko are clearly NHL-ready. Hell, Babcock wanted Ouellet on the roster straight out of last year's training camp. These are not players who need to make major strides in Grand Rapids to prove they belong in the NHL. The only reason we're having this conversation is because there's a logjam (and the only reason there's a logjam is because Kenny rewarded Kindl and Ericsson with dumb contracts and now the two are pretty much untradable). Sure, Quincey and Ericsson are veteran NHLers and Ouellet and Marchenko aren't, and, in theory, a veteran is "better" than a kid. But we're getting dangerously close to Catch-22 territory.
"You need to be an NHLer for me to even consider rating you higher than a veteran NHLer, and until I rate you higher than a veteran NHLer, you can't be an NHLer. Grab dat cheez tho!"
I know, I know - better to have a veteran and a largely unproven kid than just an unproven kid. And that's fair enough. But, at the same time...if we're not planning on re-signing Quincey next summer, and we're not going to make a trade for a young stud defenseman, and we're going to continue to preach the need to get younger and quicker and how vitally important it is that the young players all take a step forward this season...maybe, just maybe, having Ouellet (probably the most promising of all our D prospects) on the third pairing instead of Quincey wouldn't be such a bad thing. Is it the safe play? No. Is it the smart play? Honestly, it probably isn't. But we have one of the weaker D groups in the league, and that's largely because we have a spectacular lack of young stud defensemen on the roster. If we're going to build ourselves a Cup-worthy D corps without the aid of a big trade, that means at least one of the Griffins prospects is going to have to become a stud NHL defenseman. Ideally, that happens while Datsyuk and Zetterberg are still elite, which gives us...two years? This may be a situation where "Eh, another year on the farm never hurt anybody" is not the right call.

I have a feeling Housley will be used as precedent in tons of arguments for players getting into the HHOF.
Housley and Niedermayer are in, but Zubov isn't? Lindros isn't? etc.
I don't think Osgood should get into the HHOF for similar reasons that I think Housley shouldn't be in there. Osgood had a good long career and was an accumulator, but was never considered among the elite.

Unlikely it'll be either. But if it's going to be one of those two it should be Fedorov.
Osgood was a big part of the team but is not the caliber of player that the Wings retire jerseys for.

    My vote is just Fedorov.
Fedorov is a first ballot HOF that was one of the best players in hockey (won the Hart Trophy) in the 90s. Osgood has the numbers and might get in the HOF, but he was never considered among the elite goalies in the league. I might have a different opinion if he won the Conn Smythe, had we won the 2009 Cup, but it is what it is.

I almost think that Holland wasn't too confident he would be able to sign anyone so that's why he said that but maybe Weiss was bought out because Richards had shown interest in signing here.

One of my problems with Kindl is that for him to look decent he has to play really sheltered minutes. Last time I looked it up he got the most offensive zone starts of any defenseman in the league.
He may come out of the game smelling like a rose but it stretches our thin blueline even thinner, and they end up making gaffes.

I'm guilty of it too but it's just another example of how you can't read too much into what these guys say to the press. It's the actions that matter, not so much the quotes.

He played with heart and a size much bigger than his frame, I'll give him that, I just think he could have handled the Team Canada deal better. He turned his back on his team and ironically it was Tampa that ended his last game.

I don't think it's a slam dunk deal. I've never been much of a Green fan but this defense desperately needs someone who can move the puck and be a threat offensively. Even if he was a 3rd pairing d-man who played miserably towards the latter part of the last season, Green still put up more points than any Red Wings defenseman. He also had more goals than any Red Wings defenseman.
Even with his defensive shortcomings Green will hopefully help keep the Wings from getting pinned in their own zone for so long, in the way that Rafalski's long bomb outlet passes used to keep the other team's forecheck honest. And a right hander on the point who can actually fire a slapshot should definitely help. The Wings apparently plan to pair him with Dekeyser, who Babcock called the eraser because of how he fixed his partners mistakes. Hopefully that will help.
But Green is also injury prone. Or his production might drop, and if he's not producing then it's certainly not worth his downsides.
It's not so much that Green is a slam dunk as it is the defense so desperately needs what he hopefully would provide.
