betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted January 2, 2006 (edited) The Lions will be competing with the Vikings, Texans, Rams, Packers, Saints, and Chiefs for a new head coach. The Raiders are likely to be next. The Jets had a disappointing year, but Marv Lewis is not likely to be available. Tice must have been a lame duck since October. There's no way the team finishes that strong, the coach gets fired anyway, and it was a decision made recently. In other news, the Lions' schedule next year looks pretty good actually. They'll play the entire sad-sack NFC West, which includes the Seahawks (who are the #1 candidate right now to pull a Super Bowl Loser next-season free-fall, in the mighty tradition of the Panthers, Raiders, and Eagles). They'll also play the sorry-ass 49ers and the struggling Cardinals (again! woohoo) and Rams. They get the entire AFC East as well, with the Patriots, Bills, Jets, and Dolphins. Six divisional games, and also the third-place teams from the NFC South and East, the Cowboys and Falcons. Looks like a schedule conducive to being competitive. EDIT to add the latest of the head-coaching vacancies. Edited January 2, 2006 by betterREDthandead

johnogrodnickfanclub 0 Report post Posted January 3, 2006 I wonder if we should find a coach first...and then worry about QB? I say that because both Marty Moringwheg and Steve Mariucci did not want Joey as their QB from the get go...they didn't like the type of passer he is. Not a good sign when the coach was never in your corner from the beginning even before getting in the first game. If we get a QB and then get a coach...we might have an unhappy coach cuz he doesn't have the guy he wants running his offense. Lets find a coach and let him have a say in who will be QB...Joey, Schaub, Rivers, someone else, whatever.

Lets find a coach and let him have a say in who will be QB...Joey, Schaub, Rivers, someone else, whatever. While we're at it, we should get a GM that actually knows his coach before he signs him to a bigass contract. Millen basically pounced on Mariucci the second he left San Francisco, didn't know who the hell he was, just said, "Hey, you won a lot a there, here's some money to come play with us." Only much later did he take issue with his style of coaching. Hopefully Matt doesn't jump the gun this time.
Heaton 1 Report post Posted January 3, 2006 Many Sports Talk radio people say Millen may trade our pick for Philip Rivers The Chargers have already stated that Rivers will be a Charger until 2010 at least. And if they haven't traded him by now, I doubt he will be traded.

gowingsgo 3 Report post Posted January 4, 2006 Wow, Joey looked great today! That was nice to see, but I don't think he'll be back next year. Best of luck to him on whatever team he goes on... The "Bus" looked absolutely unstoppable in today's game..the fans were just estatic. For a minute though, I actually thought the Lions were going to win. Guess I should've known, eh? Better luck next season. I think the Steelers were looking to get the day off. Had San Diego won Saturday night Pittsburgh was in the playoffs no matter what happened Sunday. When San Diego lost, that forced Pittsburgh to go to work. I'd be foolish to think that didnt have an affect on how the Steelers played early in the game against Detroit. They have been slow starters almost all year.
Matt 1,049 Report post Posted January 4, 2006 Many Sports Talk radio people say Millen may trade our pick for Philip Rivers Not a chance in hell. There's no way this team goes for another inexperienced QB that has had NO playing time. Might as well go with Orlovsky. Most likely at this point? Harrington is back at a renegotiated contract and the team signs Kitna (eww). If they trade their pick it'll be for Matt Schuab (and even then I doubt it'd be their No. 1 -- maybe their No. 2), who has actually *played*. Or a trade for Brees. betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted January 4, 2006 Couple links: Coaches Millen speaks! Looks like the "official candidates list" includes Maurice Carthon, Al Saunders, Mike Singletary, Jim Haslett, and Dick Jauron. Carthon, according to the Yahoo article, is interviewing today, and Saunders and Haslett will interview this weekend. Singletary has been contacted, and Jauron remains a candidate thanks to his incumbency. Other names are mentioned but only as speculation, nothing concrete. So far so good, I say. They are only going after one retread, Haslett, and Haslett is a good coach that has had nothing but rotten Saints teams to deal with. I think he did a decent job in New Orleans, all things considered. Glad they aren't bothering with flashy names like Martz, Sherman, etc. It's nice to finally hear the Lions make some public statements. Millen and the rest of the brass have been mousy-quiet since Mooch was fired.
dallas27 7 Report post Posted January 4, 2006 (edited) All I have to say is that the Pitts game have given people yet another false sense of hope about Joey... He'll be ok somewhere else...just not here. *edit* Singletary would be pretty sweet as a head coach Edited January 4, 2006 by dallas27

betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted January 6, 2006 Changed my mind. I said that I would like to see the Lions draft Virginia Tech CB Jimmy Williams, but upon reading of his ejection from the Gator Bowl, and subsequently reading about his thuggish behavior on the field through his Tech career; and add to that the overall classlessness of the entire Tech program (as evidenced by the inordinate number of personal fouls, unsportsmanlike conducts, behind-the-refs-back dirty plays, and the infamous Vick stomp), I no longer want Williams or any Hokie on the Lions any more. It's too bad Kevin Jones comes from that run-to-ground program. Trade up to grab D'Brickashaw, take a defensive lineman (Hali or Kiwanuka) or trade the pick away. On the brighter side, the Lions are interviewing Jim Haslett today and Gary Kubiak (Broncos defensive coordinator) tomorrow. I still want Carthon, but it's nice to see the Lions do this right for once: a number of quality candidates interviewed in as quick a time as possible. RockyMountainWingGal 108 Report post Posted January 13, 2006 It's January 12th and the Lions haven't canned Millen yet? Every other losing team in the NFL is making all of their front office/coaching changes right now. The Lions are so pathetic I can only laugh at the mention of them, the title of this thread kind of says it all. "Detroit Lions - you have got to be kidding me?" Matt 1,049 Report post Posted January 13, 2006 I'm still having trouble fathoming that if Hanson missed that last-second FG against the Saints that we'd be picking No. 2... The Lions can't even LOSE right.

The Lions can't even LOSE right. No worries. The high pick hasn't helped all that much in recent years anyway. If Paul Edinger had missed that last-second field goal in 2000, we wouldn't be in this pickle to begin with.

If Paul Edinger had missed that last-second field goal in 2000, we wouldn't be in this pickle to begin with. It's not who they'd take at No. 2 -- I think they could trade down a few spots and still get a player like D'Brick, or Hawk... some people have Hawk dropping as far as No. 9, but who knows. The flexibility of trading down would be nice (or even getting one of the two QBs, though I'd feel better trading for Schuab or Volek.)
