G Joey MacDonald placed on waivers

It appears the Wings are clearing up some salary cap space, or perhaps a roster spot, for a move or two before Tuesday's trading deadline. Even though MacDonald doesn't make much, the Wings would be right up against the cap if they acquired a $5 million-plus player like Keith Tkachuk or Todd Bertuzzi without clearing a little space.

The timing is odd because you'd figure they'd want MacDonald to back-up Chris Osgood Saturday in Nashville instead of bringing Dominik Hasek along on the trip. MacDonald might still be around. If he clears waivers, the team doesn't have to send him down right away, or even at all.

Bill Guerin or Tkachuk of the Blues still appears to be at the top of their wish list. Florida's Bertuzzi, who had back surgery in November, might not play before Tuesday, which might kill any potential trade possibilty

Exactly...clearing roster spot + small salary cap space.

Wouldn't they just send Langfeld back down if they wanted to clear a roster spot?

Yeah, but when Samuelsson gets back - that's when Langfeld goes.

Why bother keeping MacDonald this week if you have no intentions of playing him again, ya know?

So does this mean that whatever deal is upcoming, we won't be losing any roster players?

That really would be ideal. Of course, when Sammy does come back - there's going to need to be a rotation of Filppula/Hudler/Williams/maybe even Cleary that would have to sit out... and no one wants that.

Okay, maybe Williams.

Maybe they plan to ship him to LA. Joey is better than Dan Cloutier! :P

I'd have to disagree so what Dan has been having a bad year, He can fight better than anyone on our team right now, yeah I know thats not saying much but still.

Joey either played suprisingly well or terribly bad (find it odd that his one win was his worst game in terms of stats). With a bit more development he wouldn't have made a bad back-up and I could see him one day being the starter for a struggling bottom-feeder somewhere.

A goalie is supposed to stop the puck. Unless LA plans to use Cloutier as their designated enforcer, what use is he?

He used to be a pretty good *regular season* goalie in Vancouver. After the favor he did us, it's hard to call him a good playoff goalie.

Inevitable with Howard and Liv in Grand Rapids.

I think they saw enough to make a decision.

Hmmmm. How much was Joey making? I still don't think it has much to do with a trade. Since the beginning of the season they've said they'd have three goalies just in case because of Dom but later on they'd let Joey go. Well now is later.

He is/was making $550,.000.00

On a sidenote, I can't believe Dom is starting tonight, in lieu of tommorrow.

Babcock has done that a few times this season. I can't remember the dates... but I remember bitching about it. I think it was Hasek started against St. Louis and Ozzie or MacDonald one started against Nashville. It didn't make sense then and it doesn't now either! The only reason I can think of is that Nashville has a bad habit of taking out our goalies and Babs may rather risk loosing Ozzie over Dom.

I hope you are one or both of the following:

A) Joking

B) Under the influence

putting williams on waivers is just as insane as putting samuelsson. they are both even in goals and samuelsson has got to be the most overrated red wing. he can't pass or skate and his shot rarely hits the net. you people say that williams should be traded because of he had a good 1st half last year and that's it, the same applies to samuelsson
