A goaltending option for next year that no one has really talked about

Niklas Backstrom. He's been outstanding for the Wild this year, and he's still decently young at 28. I'm not sure if we'd have much of a chance at getting him, or if the Wild plan on resigning him, but he's an UFA at the end of the year. What's everyone think of Backstrom?

It'd give Flip someone to talk to as well :D

Not much point in bringing another young guy in.

Holland fumbled the ball last summer when a guy like Luongo was on the market.

Apparently the best young, up & coming goalie in the game didn't even merit a look because management is fully confident Jimmy Howard will be just as good and should get his shot.

Oh, because you're fully aware of what happened behind closed doors, right?

I have a feeling the Wings were much closer to getting Luongo than most people think.

I know. I laughed too.

I just don't know what the hell HOH said I said about Yzerman.:)

For those of you whose decoder ring didn't work...

"no wai how culd hollend no trde 4 lango yzermen gm plz" translates to "No way! How could Holland not trade for Luongo? Yzerman for GM, please."

Did it occur to you maybe that Luongo didn't want to come play in Detroit?

Holland tried to get him, but other GM's (that's more than 1), were vying for Luongo as well?

Did it occur to you that the salary cap and money was probably an issue?

Many factors probably played into Luongo not being here...not just your sole factor, which is probably something revolving around "Holland is a doofus"

you're joking, right?

How do you know Holland didn't try to sign him?

Who could we have offered to bring in Luongo and still have a team left to put in front of him?

Signing players in the NHL is a bit more complicated than in a fantasy league or on your PS2.

Exactly. I'm sure that Kenny tried to get Luongo (what GM with more than 2 brain cells wouldn't?), but was no doubt hampered by factors such as salary restraints, the amount we would have had to give up in a trade and the offers coming from other GM's.

The way Backstrom's playing we'll have more of a chance getting Fernandez than him.

But seriously,I wouldn't take him.

He's not the best finnish goalie we could get and some of them would be way cheaper too.

Exactly. With Backström playing as strongly as he is now and with the fat contract that Manny has I think they'll try to keep Backström and try to get rid of Manny during summer. We'll see what happens though but I think that the big rush for goalies that is building up around the league is going to get busted by the small amount of goalies that will actually be available. I mean, Wilds might even decide to hold on to Manny if he plays alright.

If the Wings signed Backstrom, he would only be a backup. Liv can do that job just as well.

I'm waiting for first "You're right,we don't need ANOTHER backup" or

"If Liv or Backstrom would be a backup, you know who'd be #1" posts that'll turn this thread into a goalie bashing as well.

:D

Very possible. :D I think Wings will only be signing a starter if anyone and Backstrom in my mind doesn't qualify as a starter in Detroit. Knowing the pressure that is placed upon Wings' keepers, it would be better for us and Backstrom himself if he just stayed in Minny and got more experience there.
