NorthDakotaWingsFan 0 Report post Posted March 25, 2007 So now the Wings have officially made the playoffs. With the playoffs come playoff traditions. For my friends and me we have a tradition of buying a playoff cigar when our team makes the playoffs and smoking the cigar when our team exits or wins the cup. This tradition holds a special meaning for me. The first year I did this tradition, the Wings won the cup in the 2002 playoffs. I have continued ever since. So I was thinking about this the other day and was wondering, what traditions do you follow? I am interested to see what it is we all do.

Zetter is Better 0 Report post Posted March 25, 2007 During the NHL play-offs when watching a Wings game I NEVER EVER wear my Wings jersey/shirt until game time.
Legendary D In 03 50 Report post Posted March 25, 2007 I usually just don't shave, but now that I have a beard as the norm, I might go ahead and shave the day before the playoffs start to start anew and let that be my playoff beard. Oh, and I wear my Stevie signed hockeytown authentic jersey. :-D Word, LDi03
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted March 26, 2007 I create a teepee, dress up like an Indian, and meditate with steam and herbs for wins....or something like that. No playoff traditions for me. I can grow facial hair insanely fast, if I don't shave for like 3 or 4 days I have a full-grown beard, so I grew a goatee for last year's playoffs, but I like to be clean shaven and it's a pain in the butt to trim/keep up with, so nothing for me. Hockey13Playa 240 Report post Posted March 26, 2007 i turn into a nervous wreck Hah me too, well these past few years of playoff series, seeing how they all ended up. I dont really have any traditions, but my mother always seems to express her feelings before the game if she thinks the wings will win or loose, and thats like a little curse that I think stuck with the wings and gave them bad luck. I go crazzzyyy when she says I have a feeling. I don't even like to hear if its good or bad

Vincanni 1 Report post Posted March 26, 2007 My tradition is to have no traditions, I've said this before. The moment I start getting superstitious it seems things only get worse which I understand within itself is a superstition. But aside from following hockey even more obsessively than usual I do nothing out of the ordinairy.
poxer 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2007 Being a former hockey player I'm very superstitious. Almost every player is. Hell, I put my gear on the same way since I first started putting it on my self. As for traditions for the wings? I never call a game, I never call a series. During playoffs. Before I call I want but as soon as it starts I get real quiet. Never_Retire_Steve 35 Report post Posted March 26, 2007 I watch hockey every single day
BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted March 26, 2007 Sadly, because of my job and the fact I have to look professional, the playoff beard is a no go My only tradtion is I go to the bar to watch the games instead of watching them at home. I watched every game of the 2002 Cup run at a local drinking establishment, and look what happened. The next few years, I wasn't able to watch every game at a bar. My bad. Last year I sat in a hotel bar at noon in San Antonio to watch the game. There only people there were me, and the bartender who didn't have the first clue about hockey. HockeyCrazy3033 168 Report post Posted March 26, 2007 I buy red and white candles and light em up before each game. If the Wings are on the PK I hold the candle in my hand..until it's over and they successfuly killed it. A bit crazzay eh? I also wear the Wings playoff slogan shirt that they have come out before the playoffs. Apparently I'll be joining the red wave this post season.! lol Also, I decorate my windows and cars outside with flags, pictures, banners..etc. OH and I gor through tons of anxiety attacks during the playoffs. Thats not a superstition. That just happens the second the puck drops.

How about last year in game 1 against Edmonton in the OTs. Every shot on goal for both teams my heart stopped . I think that happens to everyone though, right? ??? gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted March 26, 2007 My younger brother made these cutout letters little kid style way back in the mid 90's that spelled "Red Wings" and then he put them in front of the TV. We won the game when he first made them so we put them up again and so on and so forth that year. We used them and made it to the Cup, went on vacation, didn't use them and lost the Cup...this was in '95...we then thought it must be the letters...goofy, I know...but when we've used them, they've won...literally, the years that it seems like we remember them have been the 3 Cup wins...but, they have been found once again so rest assured, I'm sure we'll win this year. Zetter is Better 0 Report post Posted March 26, 2007 Here in Ottawa all the kids make signs that say "Honk for the Sens" and stand on the street decked out in Sens gear and people go honking like crazy. I went out with a "Honk for the Wings" sign. I got lots of honks (from the Leafs fans)
