Stevie: "Not a rash decision by the Red Wings. Not a decision made overnight. Thought long and hard, taking into account what Pavel has done, what he's doing and what he will do. Taken the cap into account. Everyone put a great deal of thought. Wings haven't had access to Crosby, Malkin etc. Datsyuk is our 1st overall. Was important to lock him up. We consider him a top player in the NHL. Put a lot of time into this and we are all delighted to make this announcement."

No need to rush this. We're talking likely near 6 million. For 7 years? Im not concerned with Nicklas retiring and the cap issue.

Point blank he has not performed the way you'd expect to get this kind of deal.

Are we the Toronto Maple Leafs? Or Islanders?

Yzerman (on playoff performances of Datsyuk): "It's not the effort, the statistics haven't been reflective of his effort. I know him as a player as well as anyone and I see the playoff stats as an abberation... Everyone forgets that Pavel wasn't expected to play last year, it was his decision to come back and he was getting more and more dominant as the series wore on... We signed him to this contract, we're expecting production and we believe we will. It's an abberation and I'm not concerned at all. The majority players go through this at some point -- producing in the playoffs -- and I have no doubt he'll quiet his doubters..."

Holland:

"Back in October we made an offer shorter than seven years. In talking to everyone in the organization, we felt comfortable in a long-term deal. He competes hard, he brings it every night. He gives you everything he's got.7-years, the longest contract any Red Wing has received. Pavel's 28, you're going to see more long-term deals because the free agency age gets lower in the CBA.

Players want a commitment. We figured out a number we thought was fair. The negotation was long because we were talking about the term."

The Red Wings organization probably won't say the number. I think it's always been their policy not to.

Since when.

The numbers are very important to us fans. If not now, I assume it will be on the news later.
