Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted April 15, 2007 How is Sid considered French Canadian? I know he's from the Maritimes and that some do speak French in that region as a geographical consequence of being close to Quebec. I know that some ppl from Quebec have moved to the Maritimes and that French is more commonly spoken in the Maritimes than the Prairie Provences. Is French his first language or maybe one of his parents is French Canadian??? Basically that is the reason. He is from the Maritimes, and most would consider that part of Quebec. Icteria virens 11 Report post Posted April 15, 2007 Basically that is the reason. He is from the Maritimes, and most would consider that part of Quebec. How common is French in the Maritimes? I would assume not as common as in Quebec of course, I know there are English sections of Montreal. Do English speakers have trouble getting around the Maritimes? I'd assume it is more bi-lingual than Quebec.
datsyuk_13_fan 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2007 Cherry is a moron, he tries so hard to act controversial it's just silly now. No one actually watches him for his hockey knowledge, it's just funny to put him on and see him talk about how great Jordan Staal is all day and bash on European players. Even worse, Brett Hull is trying to be the Don Cherry for America. Earlier he made a comment about how the Rangers have a lot of european players so Avery was a good pickup because he will add heart to a mostly european team... If you want to watch someone that actually knows what they are talking about, watch Kelly Rhudey..he actually knows what he is talking about.
J-Swift 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2007 Basically that is the reason. He is from the Maritimes, and most would consider that part of Quebec. I certainly wouldn't. The first time I ever saw Don Cherry come down on Sidney Crosby was when Sid tried some tricky move back when he was with Rimouski, late in a game that was pretty much already decided. And for the record, Don usually has nice things to say about Alexander Ovechkin. He's always complimented Alex on his enthusiasm for the game.
C'sInMyBlood 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2007 OK, yes I understand Cherry can say some pretty stupid stuff from segment to segment, but do any of you really think Datsyuk's blocking of that shot, upright, legs together, with his hand over his face, is a good way to block a shot? I have never seen this before, well not in hockey anyways...soccer yes. I hope next time somebody is going to crank one, he does the same thing...and they walk around him. I'm sure somebody on the Wings team or coaching staff will give him a heads up on what NOT to do next time somebody winds up. Either that or get the man a full face shield so he can at least still watch what is going on, and not worry about his pretty face.

I'd like to see him learn to block shots better, but someone can still walk around him.

This was several years ago. They showed footage of this and his main beef was that if your going to block shots like that DON"T have your stick straight forward b/c if the shot hits the blade the puck can crawl right up the shaft of the stick and strike you in the face. They've shown several examples over the years on HNIC. It was kind of a "don't do this kids" type message.
Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted April 15, 2007 I certainly wouldn't. Well, Grapes always criticizes Sid for being a French Canadian. I don't know if he really is one, but I guess most do consider him one. And for the record, Don usually has nice things to say about Alexander Ovechkin. He's always complimented Alex on his enthusiasm for the game. Hardly. Ever since he checked Briere from behind, he always finds a way to sneak that in there, saying how he gets "star treatment" and all this other stuff. I really don't think he's too fond of Ovechkin either. If you want to watch someone that actually knows what they are talking about, watch Kelly Rhudey..he actually knows what he is talking about. Ugh. I can't stand Hrudey. While I admit he is a smart guy when it comes to hockey, he is so increadibly boring that I generally don't watch him. When he talks hockey, he's alright, but a lot of the times he talks about other far off stuff that has nothing to do with hockey. Don Cherry is an ignorant son of a *****. I hate that man with a passion. I have met him numerous times and he has had some choice words for my need to wear a Red Wings jacket. What has he actually said to you? The usual "Euro puss" crap that always comes out of his mouth about the Wings?
superstarsingh 23 Report post Posted April 15, 2007 Yeah you got it. The Wings are soft, they do not have the Canadian grit to win. Okay buddy, Draper, Maltby and Cleary? I guess they must be Czech or Swedish?
Icteria virens 11 Report post Posted April 15, 2007 I've always thought Crepes (what a funny nickname for him, it's like Grapes but only French, ohhh) was on the AO bandwagon b/c of his dislike for Sidney.

Burninator 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2007 (edited) Well, Grapes always criticizes Sid for being a French Canadian. I don't know if he really is one, but I guess most do consider him one. Where is everyone getting this from? No really, I've never heard someone call him French Canadian (outside of a message board). A Canadian would never call someone from Nova Scotia a Frenchie. I don't know it would be like an American calling someone from Nevada a southern hill billy or something. Ugh. I can't stand Hrudey. While I admit he is a smart guy when it comes to hockey, he is so increadibly boring that I generally don't watch him. When he talks hockey, he's alright, but a lot of the times he talks about other far off stuff that has nothing to do with hockey. He is okay. Earlier this year he was talking about the Flames scoring problem (we were in the top 5 of scoring in the NHL at the time) it was really disappointing to hear that, especially because he lives in Calgary. Don't believe me? Just ask Jason Williams.

Guest Tunbo Batman Report post Posted April 15, 2007 again, its what that idiot DOESN'T say that matters. he cant find ONE good thing to tell us about his beloved Canadian Team, so he ******* on one of the game's most exciting players because he doesn't want to get killed by a slapshot. not a word about his 2 consecutive 90+ point seasons, or how amateurish goalies look in front of him, or how this is his playoff breakout year. nope, he's a wuss cuz he protects his balls. I'd like to see him learn to block shots better, but someone can still walk around him. So is this how he usually attempts to block a shot? I only get to see the guy score sick goals, and make crazy passes on highlights, or when Detroit is on CBC, or playing the Flames or Oilers on Sportsnet. Ok I see Icteria's response now, the biggest problem I had was the glove over the face thing, I guess as a Calgary fan we are spoiled with Stephane Yelle's shot blocking, he sprawls, but you don't see guys being very successful walking around him even when he is sprawled out. I guess shot blocking is really an art like checking, shooting, fighting, and passing, some guys have it, some don't. Still the strangest shot block I have ever seen. Sorry, I could have sworn he's called him that before. Guess I must have it confused with somebody else, probably Briere. In that case, Grapes hates Sid for three reasons: He wears a visor, is not gritty, and doesn't block shots. That sounds about right. C, I don't know if you've read the whole thread but I really believe this is, in part, a cultural thing, many Russians will block a shot by staying up, putting their legs together. Sometimes they go down to one knee but rarely will they ever go all the way down like many North Americans. It's really how they were taught. Obvisouly there are exceptions but in general I've found it holds true. Still can't say much about the hand to the face bit but oh well, I'm not too concerned. Yeah, I did read the whole thread, I've seen some North Americans block it the same way, but the face cover gives Datsyuk a 10 for originality. I do understand why you might not be too be concerned about it, especially when he can do other things so well.

Thats how MacTavish was teaching his players to do it was it not?? Id rather cover my face to block a shot than risk a busted up nose, mouth, cheek, etc.
