Holmstrom: Out until at least Game 4

This may sound odd, but in some way Homer being out might actually help the power play. Maybe with him out babcock can get it through his head that even people who don't watch hockey know what the wings are going to do. hhmmmmmm........back to the point and hope it gets tipped or a screen to go in. But nope, just blocked. They have a man advantage, and they take it so far back there about to go offsides, and then try for this perfectly placed shot. You don't have to be good at blocking shots to stop the Wings, they'll fire it right into you. Work it down low like all the successful teams. It's a joke. And with Homer out, there is really no one there to stick in front as effectively, so a forced change in game plan might be what they need.

Question though Osgod, what about lines, I have debated that one with it too...I think Franzen needs to be moved up to the first line in that scenario and Calder should bring a more veteran presence on a 4th line with 2 of the 3 rookies, and then one of either Filpulla or Hudler gets bumped up to play with Lang and Bert, I'd say Filpulla.

What do you think?

Dats-Z-Franzen

Flapjack-Lang-Bert

Cleary-Drapes-Maltby

Calder-Kopecky-Hudler

(I believe Kopecky can play center, I may be wrong though)

lang needs to be on the fourth line in my opinion. he brings nothing to this team anymore, he doesnt try, he isnt fast and he skates away from any type of physical contact (aside from the one hit he layed last night). If i were babs id set up the lines like this:

z-dats-bert

franzen-flip-huds

cleary-drapes-malts

kopecky-lang-calder

i agree with you also bringback91. We need to stop the point shots because theyre ALL being blocked. we need to set ourselves up like SJ did on the PP goal last night. Have dats on the side boards and let him make plays, thats what were paying nearly 7 million for right? but z and bert out with him. I think that if they kept it down low theyd have a much better chance on the PP. and at this point anythign is worth trying with our horrible powerplay

Bertuzzi should be the replacement for the guy to stand in front of the net, not Samulesson. Bertuzzi is big and strong enough to handle the physical play in front. Samulesson will get pushed around and will probably ball up on the ice when the going get's rough. For as big as Samulesson is, he is probably one of the weakest players on the team. Bertuzzi is the way to go with someone in front of the net.

I know the injury is serious and if additional bleeding occurs then it could get worse...but why can't he put on a full shield to avoid that?

Its the playoffs, and we need you homer!

He already does, he has replaced Homer on PP line #1, now who should be on line #2 is the question. I vote for Sammy just so he won't be at the point.

Babock needs to have a heart to heart talk with Lang and let him know, this is probably is only shot at the stanley cup, he needs to produce or the cup his name goes on is someone jock strap. I think franzen in front of the net would be good, he has the drive to get that goal and he is kinda big to move out of the way. I hope babcock reads all our comments because everyone agrees that we need different line ups against the sharks. Go wings in 6

It's better being safe than sorry , we definetly miss him, But there's no way Homer takes the risk if his eyesight can be permanantly damaged.

Not just missing his tenacity in front of the net, but obviously his skill at deflections, irritating the goalie within the rules, etc.

This is a HUGE loss, let's not kid ourselves.

Those lines look good to me but Kopecky is a winger. I think we should put OSGOD in net for a game!

As a person, and a human being, I hope Holmstrom recovers quickly, I really do. I don't ever wish injury on another, especially something like what is wrong with his eye. That just sucks.

As a Sharks fan though, it's a good thing (that he's out, not that he's hurt), because he's caused Nabokov a lot of problems in the past.

Still, speedy recovery Holstrom!

Because there are other factors to consider aside from incidental contact with the eye, the example I was read was the amout of pressure in the eye increases when you're active. Too much pressure could cause him to bleed out.

Man that's bad news.

The Wings are so banged up from that Calgary series. A couple broken hands, some bad backs, an eye injury, a concussion and ankle injury.

That's a bad way to start a series against a good team like SJ.

Here's hoping it isn't too serious and that Homer can play again soon!

Regarding his "replacement", I think that Bertuzzi ought to get a shot on the first line and ought to be the guy out front on the PP. I think he's already been sitting there, just as a member of Lang's line. And yes, Sammy's no superstar but I haven't been totally disappointed by his defensive play. He's been checking, although he sure scares me when he carries the puck up the ice. Anyways, my point is that I don't think it would help to simply replace him. And frankly, I don't think sticking him in front of the net on the 2nd PP is too bad of an idea. After all, we all know that his shots from 50 feet out never have a chance, so why not let him try to battle it out near the net?

other lines:

Franzen-Lang-Sam

Hudler-Filippula-Calder

I don't think the 4th line should even be a regular line. Saying that Calder is a veteran presence is a bit of a stretch, and although Filippula looked good in the last series, whoever pointed out that these guys (esp Hudler) looked tiny last night was correct. My personal opinion is that these guys on the 4th line could be interchanged through the Sam's spot on the other line and whereever else for that matter.

Of course it would be great to have Homer, but just the play of one player is rarely enough. Whatever the lines are tommorrow, they have to play better. Hopefully as many players as possible in the lineup are healthy too!

my 2 pennies.
