So how the NHL could be conducting its Stanley Cup playoffs this spring without the Canadiens and Maple Leafs? With Toronto and Montreal left outside, dark, barren, its hockey-passionate citizens wondering how hockey has fallen into such a dismal state?

Indeed, when the playoffs opened last month, four of the supposed Original Six franchises had failed to qualify. The Bruins and Blackhawks (one word now) joined the Canadiens and Maple Leafs among the eliminated during the tedious regular season.

I can understand tradition and nostalgia, but just because you're an original six team doesn't mean you get an automatic playoff berth. And it's not like we didn't make rules to specifically keep them out. They didn't earn it. Maybe you shouldn't be placing the blame on the league. The franchises are the ones who didn't earn it.

I agree with you all, plus the Blackhawks and Canadiens haven't been good for a while, I'm not surprised in the least that they didn't make it. The Bruins were far from good as well, doesn't the teams playing ability count for anything?

He's not saying that the original six teams should get some advantage due to their history. It's merely an article lamenting the days gone by, and honestly there's a few good stories in there from the old days.

I'm not one of those guys who thinks every fan in Nashville is a hillbilly who doesn't know anything about hockey, but honestly I'd be much more interested in a Chicago Toronto Stanley Cup final, or virtually any other original six matchup than I would watching teams like Carolina or Anaheim play for the Cup.

The original six teams in the Cup finals feels like old time hockey. While I understand it's just the changing game, the expansion franchises just seems... weird.

Good post.

I agree with you. The expansion franchises just don't do it for me. Watching Carolina win the Cup last year was just... I don't know... lame. I really wish we'd see an Orginal six SCF again sometime soon, because not only would it be great to watch, it would be great for hockey and the NHL in general.

Oh Harold - yer old. Like me. But hey - another 50 years? This will be old time hockey. By then we'll be saying "How in the f*** can Neptune get in over Guadalajara?? This is F***ed! - their head to head record was even..... etc etc etc."

aloha

Maybe if they won more games in the regular season see? They keep track of that and then total it up and the top 8 teams in each conference get to.................

montreal did have more wins ....and they still didn't make the playoffs ........the current system is flawed , too many points given out , 1 pt automatically when your in ot, if you lose you get nothing thats how it should be ....to me anyways, you should get 1 pt if you make it to a shootout .......and the rankings should be point wise not the top leaders in each division finish 1...2...3

they have to fix some stuff

I know! How can they let a team like Neptune in the playoffs? We need some more Original 30 teams in like Columbus and Nashville!

Hey, I'm younger than Cheli. And Lidstrom, actually.

But yeah, I know. Like I said, I understand it. But I can't help being more interested in the old teams than in an expansion franchise. And even next year when they replace them, they'll still be sweaters not jerseys. Gotta hang on to that history.

And I think Neptune is overrated because they're in a weak orbit. It pads their stats.

Well the bruins aren't headed anywhere near the playoffs in a long time. how stupid do you have to be to trade away joe thornton...that trade has curse potential written all over it!

and i'd love for a wings/rangers cup final this year, that would be old time hockey.

I'd love to see that, too, but for it to happen the Rangers better get it in gear for the third period, cuz they are losing 4-2 in the early stages of the third period right now. If they lose, they're out.

I am too young to remember the Original Six era and I barely remember the Expansion Six era. My dad, though, tells me stories about seeing Gordie and the Production Line back in the glory days of the 1950's. I think for most hockey fans, there is a certain nostalgia held about the Original Six era and it seems to be more so in hockey than in any other sport. I don't remember the same sort of fuss being made when the NBA, MLB or NFL expanded their number of teams. i don't know why this is...you could say it's because hockey fans are more traditionalists than fans of the other sports but that's not entirely true. There's a lot of tradition in the other sports, too, especially baseball.

Regardless, I think the NHL just expanded too much and too quickly. I don't think the league can really support 30 teams long term. But no one is going anywhere and we will not see contraction at any point in the forseeable future.

And I think Neptune is overrated because they're in a weak orbit. It pads their stats.

TFF!!! This is the funniest thing I've read on these boards in a while!! And you know what? It'll probably be Gary Bettman IV, the great-great grandson of the esteemed *cough* commissioner that expands the NHL to Neptune!

Well, that's how it goes...Chelios got that late penalty when he grabbed the third arm of the Neptune Triton's defenseman Onan Zornk and hauled him down in front of the goaltender. I mean, things happen in the playoffs.

Will this be in the year his extends his streak to 72 straight seasons in the playoffs?

No, I'm pissed they allowed a goal on what was clearly an offsides play last year.

3 of his 4 legs were in the zone, and as you know, you need at least 50% of your legs behind the blueline when the puck crosses.

They were robbed.

And I'm so freaking sick of playing Saturn 20 times a year. They're a bunch of redspots who don't know a thing about the sport. The NHL should contract from at least three planets.

Nice topic guys!! Some good laughs in here!

On topic though: It's sad not to see all the Original 6 vying for the Cup each year. On the other hand Detroit is one W away from the WCF. Besides, the O6 already have a legacy that is unbeatable by any of the expansion teams. Who needs the present when you've got the past, eh?

I agree with you. Saturn has that Omechi Zernomk, who is such a cheapshot! I mean, since when are lazers allowed to be shot? He makes Tootoo look clean!
