Rafalski a Red Wing: 5-years, $30-million

He is most definately a good Defensemen. I just hope he comes in to own for his hometown. We need him to play GREAT for 6 damn million a year, because now we are not going to get much else.

I hope they manage Blake now.

look at it this way in 2 years he will be a bargain with the way money for d men keeps going up

i'm excited about this pickup but i'm hard pressed to understand how people could say that 30M over 5 isn't overpaying.

we obviously have not seen the end of the unexpected.

Come on guys, the Wings NEVER act quickly on free agents. Which means they had to know Schneider was leaving, and we saw how fast Schneider did leave. Who else were thy gonna sign? Poti? This thread would have double the replies already if they signed Poti.

we are done man , lidstrom zetterberg datsyuk raflaski will total 27 million cap space in 3 yrs , thats 23 million left for the whole team and thats if the cap doesnt decrease ..........stupid, stupid mistake by the redwings

and dont forget filppula franzen cleary lebda will all get raises ......... then what happens if howard sucks ?? we'll have to get a goalie at least at 4 mill per , thats 31 million for 5 guys not too mention the pay increases of other players

Jeez, someone hide the razor blades.

Rafalski > Schneider+$500,000. He is Nick's replacement and a proven winner. I always hated playing against him (because of talent), so he is naturally a good pick up. Think Chelios.

what an awful signing , awful ...........6 million a year for rafalski ????? give me a f'n break , hes not worth that money and the last thing we needed was another small defensemen , nice way to screw us up in a few years when zetterberg will get his raise ...........zetterberg lidstrom datsyuk rafalski = 27 million = bye bye redwings

Where do people get this s***? Zetterberg has 2 more years left on his contract. IF Lidstrom is around he WONT be making 7.6 and if Detroit cant give Lidstrom what he wants, then Lidstrom will retire. If he really wants to stick around a year or two more, hell take less.

You people need to relax with the fatalism. If Schneider can get 5.5M at the age of 38, who says that Rafalski cant get 6M when hes 38 and the cap will likely be higher?

And if you dont think Rafalski is worth 6M, you need to do your research. Hes an upgrade from Schneider. The only hardcore concern with this signing is that our defense remains small and non physical. Although its a little bit younger now.

No matter how great he is...how can we aford another $$ d-man? Seriously. Isn't that why we need a goalie? Or do they KNOW we aren't getting Dom back.

That's how I see it.

This is without a doubt a preemptive move to deal with the loss of Lids.

When they eventually lose him theoretically we will have a top two defensemen who is a hometown guy to help soften the blow.

I just have to wonder what is going on in terms of getting goals.

This doesn't really help us with that, and if Zetter has to be the one to take this one on the chin I'll be pissed.

I'll be the first to admit I'm not all that familiar with Rafalski. However some of the posts in this thread are making me feel pretty good about this signing. It's great to see our defence get a little bit younger for once, as much as I loved having Schiender a part of the team. The price tag may be steep, but I blame the Flyers for setting the bar so high.

Excited to see him play. If we could get Smyth at this point, I would be ecstatic. Still hoping for Bert to resign though.

If they did this, and the last thing we heard is that they were closer with Dom than anyone else, I think they're set. And geez, everyone forgets about the Stanley Cup Winning, 300-game winning backup we have. Or we can go out and spend $5-6 million for Joseph, or maybe Belfour, since Florida got Vokoun.

I would have prefered Calder.

I never forget about Ozzie.

But I don't think they'll start him. Ozzie's my favorite...if they did I'd love it. I'm also thinking they won't sign Bertuzzi now...I'm bummed.

People seem to be forgetting that the cap is going to continue to rise. It rose 6.3 million from what is was last year. It probably won't rise that much per year, but it'll go up by a couple million every year.

I'm not going to worry about it. Trust the front office, they've proved time and time again that they're the best in the league, and that they know exactly what they're doing.

we cant count on that , if in 2 yrs hes still playing and surprisingly winning norris's then we cant ask him to take a huge paycut

Yeah, actually Holland can ask him to take a paycut if its for the good of the team. Whats Lidstrom going to do? Hes not going to go to another team, and if he retires, it wouldnt be unexpected or too soon. And the likelihood of him winning any Norris after next year are unlikely. He may be the best Dman now, but hes not getting any better, while a slew of other Dmen in the NHL are.

On a different note, Rafalski isnt a "top 4" Dman, hes a #2 Dman, and would be a #1 on some teams in this league.

Our D wasn't exactly the broad street bullies when Schneider was back there...

Yes but Matt could hit hard and was pretty big. Rafalski can dish out a bit too. It will be fun to watch he and Lidstrom on the points (Rafalski's a RH shot and is slick)

Im not talking about Schneider. Im talking about the fact that, if you include Quincey, we now have 7 Dman, and none of them are as physical as Markov.

People who talk about needing Markov for "physicality" are forgetting about how Lilja played near the end of the regular season and in the playoffs. Lilja has shown that he will hit and fight, and his offensive production is the same as Markov's, which is to say very little.

At least someones got their heads on straight. Lidstrom has talked about going back to Sweden tons of times over his career, and yet people think he and Cheli will be playing on for years to come.

My initial response. Too much money - too much time.

All of us who wanted Smyth or Drury can kiss that thought goodbye.

The biggest free agent signings with impact last season were defensemen and goalies.
