Hank 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2007 Would you pick up Bondra for 1 year at $1-2M? He looked like he still had some gas in the tank.
Wings3:16 324 Report post Posted July 5, 2007 He was fairly brittle these past two seasons wasn't he?
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted July 5, 2007 He's only getting older, he'll turn 40 part way through the season and he looks to be getting slower. Don't think I'd spend $2 million on him.
Hank 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2007 He was fairly brittle these past two seasons wasn't he? Yeah, I don't think he's played over 70 games in a while. But I think he still has some decent hands. At this point, I guess Kenny and the staff have to see if certain FA's are much of an improvement over what we have right now. I'd rather see guys like Hudler, Filpulla and Grigs get a chance on the top two lines before someone like Mike York.

Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted July 5, 2007 Bondra will probably sit out until December, and then be picked up by a bad team that doesn't want to play 3 lines of rookies. I wouldn't take him. He's on thin ice (no pun intended) in the NHL, and isn't the top name he used to be. Old age, injuries, and declining production have all taken their toll on him. Not my preference if he comes here, but won't throw a fit if he comes here cheap. Definitely not the player he once was in Washington, but he could still light the lamp every now and then in a 2nd/3rd line role perhaps.
redwinger40 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2007 This is my first post ever, but I had to chime in during this off-season talk. I don't understand why all Wings fans think we can only win by playing the free agent game. We have talent in our system, we just need to develop it (in a similar way to how Anaheim has with their talent, such as Penner and Getzlaf). Players like Hudler, Grigs, Quincey and even Jimmy Howard should be able to show us what they've got. I think that many of our young guys will thrive in expanded roles, lets not wait till they are in their late 20s to give them full-time duty. Have a little faith in what we have- lets not sign a 40 year old who's glory days are in the rearview mirror.

I'm really excited to go with who we've got.
Guest EZBAKETHAGANGSTA Report post Posted July 5, 2007 Call me crazy but for 650-800 tho i would take him. He could be a mini mentor to Hudler.
puckhog419 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2007 sign him for less then a million and i am in. the younger guys can learn a lot from him. and there is just something about the water in michigan that just make the older guys preform better.
BringHomeTheCup! 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2007 I wouldn't be opposed to this, especially if it were an incentive laden contract. Over his career Bondra has proven he can score. He has a great shot, which would compliment Pav very nicely. Even if he were to just play on the third line, I don't think it would hurt the team. I'd hold off until December much like the Hawks did last year.

We were spoiled by Illitch and Holland during the no cap days. We need to get used to the fact that not all of our players are going to be definite HOFers= they might develop into them over time, but they won't be shoo-ins like Hull, Robattaille, Yzerman, and Shanahan. Its like the old thing about people looking for a job but the job they want is requiring experience. How do you get experience without having the job? We can't go out and pluck all these experienced guys all the time anymore. We have to work within the boundaries of the cap, so we need to do in-house development. Its happening, but way too many people on this board are so used to seeing Kenny sign all of those 600+ goal scorers, they have forgotten what its like to watch the player develop and SCORE all of those goals in our uniform. Opie 308 Report post Posted July 5, 2007 Think of the major impact guys on the roster last year that were brought up through the system: Dats Z Lids Homer I am missing some one who played a major role and was drafted by the wings and came up through the system? It is time to foster our own growth. Take a page from the red sox not the yankees. The sox have a bunch of guys they went out and paid for, but have a tremendous amount of youth. That to me is where the wings need to head.
OsGOD 3 Report post Posted July 5, 2007 No thank you! no time to sign useless forwards... we are still 11 d-men short of a full roster... at least kenny is aware of that and make such a move as signing Bondra
Flip-check 6 Report post Posted July 5, 2007 (edited) sign him for less then a million and i am in. the younger guys can learn a lot from him. and there is just something about the water in michigan that just make the older guys preform better. It's the waste from the river puckhog. Bondra is such a known name for the nineties... and I'd want him, too. I don't know about his injuries in Chicago however, that's the biggest thing - his season with the Thrashers was decent though Edited July 5, 2007 by Flip-check
Guest Crymson Report post Posted July 5, 2007 Not happening. Kenny would have signed him as a UFA last season when nobody wanted him if it was going to happen ever. Now Bondra is one year older. Not happening.
BringHomeTheCup! 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2007 Not happening. Kenny would have signed him as a UFA last season when nobody wanted him if it was going to happen ever. Now Bondra is one year older. Not happening. He will also be cheaper this year, and play a lesser role this year than he would have last season. He still has some gas left in the tank. However, I have an odd feeling that Garth Snow might be calling him.
RedWings Gone Wild 6 Report post Posted July 5, 2007 Don't be so sure that something like this wont happen. Every single season Holland takes a risk on at least one seemed-to-be washed up vet. Remember: Bertuzzi, Hasek, Steve Thomas, and Cheli. Holland continually gives chances to vets past their prime. why? Because they will sign for dirt-cheap and under the correct circumstances they could really contribute. Everyone said Holland was crazy for resigning Hasek and Cheli last season. I would not be surprised to see either Bondra, Nedved, Ozolinsh, or Lindros in a wings jersey next yr for cheap. Also, Mike Peca is still out there, i would not mind having him. Not happening. That doesn't sound like a hindering fact for Holland and Co. But I still say we need more defense and less offense, so down with the Bondra!
