Son of a Wing

Chelios "I'd never play for Detroit. "

Oh my. How times have changed!

You gotta think about it this way though. Cheli probably would never have played for Detroit had we not gone out and traded for him. It's not like it was his choice.

That being said, he absolutely LOVES it here. He's been a Wing almost as long as he was a Hawk.

Yes, but I remember how he cried during his interview after being traded to Detroit. It didn't engender any warm fuzzies from me. I hated him back then as well. He was a real SOB. Plus there was the whole Chicago rivalry thing. Took me three years to warm up to the guy. Thank God Bert's gone. I don't think I'll live long enough to be proud he was on the Wings.

The only reason Cheli said that, was because of the huge Chicago/Detroit rivalry. So it's perfectly understandable that he wouldnt wanna play for a rival team. But ever since he came to Detroit, the rivalry died big time. Mostly because Chicago started sucking real bad. So Im sure it didnt take Cheli long to embrace the Winged Wheel. Hell, Cheli is more of a Detroit guy now than a Chicago guy. He even spends his summers here. Cheli loves the Red Wings. And I personally am 100% proud of Chelios' tenure in a Red Wings jersey.

I still don't like Chelios and I don't think I ever will. I just hope the Wings don't do something dumb like retire his number.

One of my favorite memories of Chelios during his Red Wing tenure was the 2002 Olympics when Steve Yzerman got Shanahan, Cheli, and Hull together after the medal ceremony for a photo. That was awesome. As a s side note Yzerman, Shanahan and Ken Morrow are the only players to win an Olympic gold medal and Stanley Cup in the same year. That fact also has a Michigan tie-in - Yzerman and Shanahan played in Detroit that year, and Morrow was born Flint.

Cheli is one of my favorite wings, he is a hard worker and an over all good guy. but..... i dought you will see his number up at Detroit. Detroit doesn't just retire anyones number, Lids will be the next and then after that i don't see anyones going up in a while. you have to basically play for Detroit your whole career to get it up there.

I see Lids for sure going up maybe Draper but that is an outside shot, other than that it would be a stretch for any current wing. Unless Dats, Z stay with D for their careers and win more. If this team becomes a perennial loser that may hurt them in that regard, but they are the only two I see with a shot right now.

Here is something I haven't bothered to check into, but I can't imagine there are many players, if anyone other than Chelios that has played at least 7 seasons each with 3 different teams.

Did you just say that maybe Draper could get his number retired?

Not for stats but for what he has done for the team, he was a big part of those cup teams. The grind line was pivotal, they had timely goals and played some great defense.

But I also did call it an outside shot, his chances of being in the rafters is about 5-10%, more than likely he won't but I could see the team putting it up as a showing of respect for what he did.

The funny part is that after he was traded to Detroit he just continued to re-sign year after year. If he didn't want to play for the Wings he sure had a funny was of showing it. :P It's just humorous thinking of how adamant he was on never playing for Detroit, yet it looks like he'll continue to sign year after year with us until he wants to call it quits.

Why are you so obsessed with numbers?

I'm not. I just have a bad feeling that the Wings are headed down a path or retiring a bunch of numbers now that they retired one of the veteran's numbers.

One of the veterans??? Steve Yzerman is just one of the veterans??? NO ONE on this roster, even comes close to deserving their jersey retired over Yzerman. They retired Yzerman's jersey because he IS Red Wings hockey. He Captained the team since '86 for Christ's sake. Won 3 Cups as our Captain. And being 6th in all time points doesnt hurt either. Anyways, to think we will start retiring jerseys left and right, just because they retired number 19, is one of the most ridiculous things i've ever heard.

Dude. This is Steve-F**king-Yzerman you are talking about. The Wings don't exactly roll out the red carpet for every half-decent veteran who comes calling. Hell, #91 would be a no-doubter on most teams, and even the most devoted Fedorov fans will tell you he's probably 50/50 at best. I would bet money that #19 and #5 will be the only numbers retired from the 90's generation.
