"Money bags Matt," I think it would be funny if he got traded to a team like the Oilers since he wanted sunny LA so bad.

:huh::angry:

Sorry my sympathy goes to people in Darfur, Tel Aviv, Palastein, the Ivory Coast, and pretty much every other third world/wartorn countries people, before going to Millionaires.

Um...wtf? How do those issues even compare to a hockey player getting a mild injury. I'm not going to be pissed at Schneider, we got Rafalski instead and that makes me much happier. Get healthy Matt!!

Ohhh I get it. He leaves the Wings, and now he's apparently the bad guy that we must all dog on and get excited about if he gets injured? *shakes head*

Grow up people. It's business.

Still got love for Schneids, and hope he gets better before the season starts.

Right? I was bummed when Matt left. Our D is already average and it got worse when he made his exit. Sorry people, but he was a good D-man for this team and most of you all know it. And just for the record, if you could change your job to make more money for your family, I'm pretty sure you would do it and not give one single ounce of crap what the folks outside of your business think.

Which would be true if the team didn't turn around and sign a better defenseman later that day.

Oh wait, they did.

This team won't be hurting on defense this year -- it's getting consistent scoring that will be the issue.

You're right. It got worse when he left then got better when he was replaced by Rafalski.

How is the defense average?

I don’t want to get into this argument again, but please no Latrell Sprewell type comments…

There is no argument. You have a job to make money. If you can get a raise, you take it. Its personal preference. And yes, our d is average. Maybe even below average. Nick and Matt were the 2 best out of the defense last season hands down. How Rafalski is better than Matt is beyond me. Ralf totaled 8 goals and 47 assists in 82 games played. Matt had 11 goals and 41 assists in just 68 games. And no one can deny that Matts blueline shots look like they came flying out of a cannon. I wont even comment about Kronwall because his injuries speak for themselves. The guy is injury prone. It doesnt matter if its the same injury or a new injury it still sidelines him. So to point out what inuries they are is irrelevant. Lilja, Ference and Chelios all had GREAT seasons by tallying how many goals together? ZERO. Does anyone still really enjoy the nastalgia Chelios brings to the team or do they see the real problem in that Chelios simply can not hang anymore? The guy is washed up. I wont deny we have some young talent that could have possibilities, but some of these guys are 2nd and 3rd year already and havnt done squat. Nick is getting old. Lets face it. He's one of the last standing in the famed dynasty. Is he really prepared to play 30 plus minutes a game this year chasing players 10 years younger than him? So yes, I would say our D is average at best. Sorry, but Rafalski isnt the answer to the defensive woes.

Defense is not about scoring goals first, it is about playing..............you guessed it, DEFENSE! While there are plenty of offensively-talented defensemen out there, like Lidstrom and Rafalski, their job is to play DEFENSE first.

It's not all about stats and numbers in sports, even in hockey past goals-assists-points. Shutting down top players to no points a game, hits per game, average ice time, and a myriad of other things.

Lilja and Chelios are not offensive-minded defensemen. If they get over five goals a season, even combined, that's like a bonus to the Red Wings. Their role is to play DEFENSE first and kill penalties, where you often don't score goals.

Your arguments might have some spice to them if you took some time to look past the numbers only.

EDIT: And wishing injuries on somebody is classless and pathetic, to the few people in the beginning of this thread. I don't care if it is a Duck player or not. Seriously, the whole Wings/Ducks fiasco drama by people in here is really getting old and stale. They won, the Wings didn't. It's done and finished. Get over it and worry about the Wings, not the other teams.

Good response. I used to get sooo pissed off when people were saying Matt was our best defenseman a couple years ago when he had more points than Lids. :looney:

Learn how to read. I'm noting about how people over react.

Disagree. I think we're more than fine on D and we have a tremendous amount of depth.

Um ... average defense ??? Were worst then last year ... ???

We pretty much almost beat the ducks with no schneids and no kronwall ... i know we didnt but look

Lidstrom alone makes all your defense very good allready

Rafalski upgrade over schneids defensively and points wise ... rafalski on a defensive minded team ... had like what 55 points? so i pretty much think are defense is better defensively last year and the same as offensevelly

Not to be a prick, but I recall you being quite upset about the dismantling of last season's roster (e.g. dropping, Lang, Calder, etc.) despite the fact that said dismantling was essentially "business."

Anyway, the topic at hand -- I believe in good business decisions. However, I also believe in the importance of ideas like loyalty, respect, class, gratitude, and so on. Schneider and Bert going to the Ducks...well, I can guarantee you it didn't leave a great taste in the mouth of Wings management....

That said, Rafalski >>> Schneider.

I don't care that we lost bert, he never really did much, Schneider though i'll miss, but only a little bit.

but they will be the ones missing us once we win the cup!
