Since last season, Mickey only does the home games. All away games feature Larry Murphy. Murph is good and all. But he's definitely no Mickey Redmond. Mick is one of a kind.

This is my 5th consecutive(other than the lockout) season of center ice. I couldn't live without it, lol. Worth every penny.

actually, from what I understand, Mickey does almost all of the Red Wings games (including the away games) but doesn't normally do West Coast trips or Western Canada trips. He does probably 90% though.

A good rule: If the game starts at 10:00 or later, Mickey won't be doing it.

Actually, Mickey has been staying home on those west-coast road trips longer then a year. He does occasionally travel with the team, but I think he's stayed home for far away games, for the most part, since before the lockout.

Mickey does the occasional road game during the season if it's in a close by city. Usually it's Chicago, but he sometimes does Columbus, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh also. During the playoffs, Mickey does do all the road games that FSN broadcasts.

It's one of the reasons why I like watching home games better on TV. Mickey adds an extra source of entertainment in the game. He's really a great broadcaster.

Yep...Mickey will do close-to-home regular season road games, like Chicago and Columbus, but in general will not do the longer road trips or west coast games, except in the playoffs.

Part of the reason is he has celiac disease, which is, in rather simple terms, a severe allergy to wheat gluten that affects the intestines and bowels. It can make you very, very ill. It can cause you to have malabsorbtion of nutrients, not to mention severe bowel issues (use your imagination...:P) among other things. If left untreated, it could kill you. I have a cousin who has the same disease and it is a pain in the neck to deal with.

The last season he went on the road he was bringing his own cooking utensils because if his food was cooked with utensils used in cooking food with wheat gluten it could make him sick. It just got to be too much of an inconvenience to travel with his own pots and pans and utensils...and food, in some cases. So Mickey opted out of the longer road trips.

The good thing is, celiac disease is very manageable with a strict, specific diet and as long as you are rather strict with this diet and stay away from the things you should, like wheat gluten. Unfortunately, this diet is not conducive to a life on the road...my cousin makes all her own bread from oat and rice flour now and rarely goes out to eat. When she does, she gets a plain salad and brings her own dressing.

Mick mentioned this year that there were a couple of places that did not allow cooking in the hotel rooms. I think he mentioned LA for one. I think they should start sending the broadcasters to those hotels with the kitchenetts, so Mick can make the road trips.

I'll tell you what IS becoming a road tradition is Scotty Bowman joining the Wings for the first road trip of the year. He walked right by me on the concourse in San Jose and he guested in the booth on FSN West in Los Angeles....

KEN: Well he's been quiet and uninteresting for 20 straight minutes, so let's talk to Hall-of-Famer Larry Murphy so he can state the obvious and feel involved in the broadcast. Larry take us through that last play.

LARRY: Well Ken, Rafalski makes a great play right there, clearing the puck out of the zone and away from the forechecker. That's great defensive awareness, definitely showing why Ken Holland went out and got him.

KEN: Fascinating. I know I mention it every time he touches the puck, but since I need to ask you things to get you to say anything remotely interesting, tell us again how wonderful it was to be paired with Nick Lidstrom during your time in Detroit.

LARRY: It was the greatest honor I've ever received, Ken. Allow me to elaborate by praising whatever Lidstrom just did on the ice for the next 30 seconds.

KEN: If Mickey quits I will kill myself.

my guess he was at the bar

Unfortunatly Mick can't drink. Hence the "ginger ales" he enjoys after the game sometimes.

I've said it before Mickey is awesome. I sometimes question his sanity, but that's part of what makes him entertaining. He know's what he's taking about most of the time, is great at breaking down plays, and although no doubt a homer, still can see both sides of a game. Murph, uh, he too adds a comical element to the game for me, and I'm sure he knows the game very well, but he does suck at being a color guy. Funniest thing he's done all year though is knock out the glass seperateing the benches, forget what game. hahaha Ken's cool, and you can tell Mickey probably aggrevates him sometimes, which makes me like Mick even more. It'll be a sad day when Mick retires.

I went to GVSU for 3 years so I had FSN Detroit, but now that i'm in Wisconsin I have Center Ice online, works great since I practically live on campus so I can watch Wings game on my computer. When I'm home, I run a S-video and Y-audio cables from my laptop to the TV and watch the game clear like it was on cable. Definately couldn't live without it. Only problem is that it is apparently brain-surgery for them to get the already played games available on demand anytime within the first week or two they are played, and I've been waiting to watch the 2nd and 3rd periods of the Sharks game.... probably Gary Bettman cutting back on tech people, and spending their checks to pay Chelios spies...

Hey c'mon, Larry is no Mick but he can still be pretty entertaining. Anyone catch that bit he had about being the player with most goals without a trick? It was pretty funny.

...actually it's been more than last season. I wanna say it's been at least 4 if not 5. When he first stopped traveling the announcers were Pat Verbeek & Shawn Burr (I believe Doug Brown even did some) who would replace Mickey. That went on for a couple of seasons, then Murphy took over for one of those guys (not sure which) and he would alternate with the other, but now it seems that Murphy won the job outright. IMO Pat Verbeek was the best out of all 4, Shawn Burr was the worst, yes even worse than Murphy. I think Verbeek has a bright future in broadcasting, he was very articulate. (if he chose to go in that direction)
