Goalie masks

SI is spotlighting goalie masks at this link, http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedi.../content.1.html

Look how big Giguere's pads are to everybody else's pads. It's ridiculous; I have a hard time believing those are within regulation. If so, the NHL needs to severely cut back on the size of goalie pads IMO.

Luongo's look kinda big, but not near as big as Giguere's.

Here are some others who I thought had big pads, again not near as big as Giguere's.

Look at the difference between Lehtonen and JS.

That is drastic. Now I know pad choice and size are different from goalie to goalie just like Cheli's pads vs everyone else, but man that is a big difference.

For the love of God, Giggy's gear is legal.

Every goalie has a different body. Some are taller and some weight more. Not all equipment is sized the same either.

The bottom line however, is it's all legal.

Not to mention almost every goalie plays the game differently. Giguere heightens his shoulders and sqaures up to every shot, while most other goalies throw a limb at the shot.

Well said.

Is it me, or are some of the designs "out of control" in term of their busy-ness? Some of the current designs seem to have exceeded their "cool do-dads" quota.

I like the Hasek, Huet, Brodeur, Leclaire designs better than the JSG or Grahame type masks... and then there's the King of mask simplicity: Ozzie.

No, No, No! GIguere's pads have to be illegal! That's the only way they could've possibly beat Detroit in the playoffs last year. No other explanation is corret.

I'm with you, I wish people would just let this go. Yes, it looks like his pads are bigger, but they are within the legal limits that the league has in place. Some people really do need to get over it.

I have to say that i'm pretty sure that all goalie pads are legal.

My questions is why can't detroit get a goalie with a cool mask. I wish that Ozzie would dust off one of the many cool mask that he has and start to wear it. I'm sick of seeing him wear that pee-wee hockey helmet in the goal.

Seriously? Do you really care? If Oz isn't comfortable in the "new" style he won't be as comfortable in goal, which will hurt his performance. I would seriously hope you're more concerned about Oz's performance rather than his choice of helmet wear.

In fairness, Ozzy is rumored to be part owner of Warwick Masks, the same people who made Dom's helmet, but for some reason, he keeps going back to the Cooper SK2000. Dom's Helmet was probably $2000 for the helmet and cage, while Ozzy's setup was probably around $90 new (those helmets in mint condition, however, sell well on eBay.)

Personally, I like the old school helmet-cage combos better than the new masks, both in appearance and use. But hey, to each their own.

OK of course i would rather that he is comfortable and playiing at the top of his game.

I guess i should have added into my prior post, if the world was perfect and i could change some things i would love to see some of the cool masks that Ozzie owns.

Didnt Ozzie have a "regualr" mask all made up and stuff but he just never used it or became comfortable with it? I think i remember seeing a poster of what it looked liked around the 98-99 season at a local card show. But if i remember right it looked similar to Norm Maracles mask when he played here.
