If the NHL had a little 2 on 2 tournament, who would take it? In other words which two guys are the best offensive duo in the NHL?

Some possible contenders I see are:

- Sedins

- Heatley/Spezza

- Datsyuk/Zetterberg

- Lecavalier/St. Louis

- Gaborik/Demitra

- Plekanec/Kovelev (I'm serious)

Out of all these though, not to be a homer, but I could see Datsyuk and Zetterberg taking it. The Sedins would be a close second, but when it comes to a combination of individual skill with chemistry, D and Z all the way.

In terms of both cumulative offensive and defensive awareness Datsyuk and Zetterberg would have that tournament at their mercy. If another team challenges them it'd be Lecavalier/St Louis, both capable of good defensive play as well as complimenting one another's skill sets wonderfully.

I'd also have to go with Pavel and Hank due to their long time playing together. Also, how dare you forget Lang and Williams in Chicago.

sounds to me this whole question is based on homer pick, because there is no chance in hell that Dats and Zetta wouldn't win this, I really can't think of one tandem on the same team that provides both at such a high skill level

I picked Zetterberg and Datsyuk, but I honestly think it isn't too unanimous. The Sedin twins have the same mind and simply know each other's instincts, which is why I think it's a toss up involving them as well.

I'm pretty sure you haven't thought about it enough, because Lecavalier and St.Louis actually produce more when you add their point totals together. I'd still pick Hank and Pavel because I think they know each other better than any other tandem besides the Sedin twinks, but in that situation Daniel Sedin is a goal scorer, while Henrik Sedin is more of the passer, so each guy isn't as dangerous all around offensively. Also, does anyone know if Kovalchuk and Hossa play on the same line? If so, then they're another tandem to think about.

I think you missed....

Crosby/Malkin....as much as I hate hearing about Crosby, he'd have to be mentioned here

Kane/Towes

Kovalchuk/Hossa

Ovechkin/Semin

Lecavalier/Richards

I don't see Hank and Pav winning that competition, I'd have to give it to Heatley/Spezza or Lecavalier/Richards.

...and what's to stop Chelios from winning this tournament by himself?

:yowza::lol::hehe:

Yes!!! Chelios would have this tourney at his mercy alone but he's too good to make it fair so i don't expect we'd see him.

Out of that list, probably not.

But I bet Crosby and Malkin would do some serious damage themselves.

And I think it would be a real chore for either Dats or Z to get the puck from Lecavailer. He's not only insanely skilled, but big and strong as an ox too.

I'm going to be biased since I'm a big Wings fan obviously, and I don't watch a whole lot of the NHL outside of the Wings, but E.T. and Teen Wolf gets the nod, though not by a huge landslide.

Heatley/Spezza and Lecavalier/St. Louis could easily contend given the scenario of the topic, IMO.

- Heatley/Spezza

- Datsyuk/Zetterberg

- Lecavalier/St. Louis

Any others mentioned are behind these 3 groups. Those 3 would be the deadliest.

Iginla/Tanguay

Stastny/Hejduk

Thornton/Marleau

Can we say HOMER? Hejduk isn't half the player he used to be. Not to mention the Avs can hardly win a game. Try being realistic next time bro. Being objective is the way to go. Not posting with the homer blinders on. Heatley/Spezza, Datsyuk/Zetterberg, and Lecavalier/St. Louis are all MUCH more deadly. Not only with scoring, but with winning games. Oh and Iginla and Tanguay aren't even on the same line anymore.

Very intelligent, unbiased post. Why didn't you just go with Parker/Lapperiere? Hejduk is actually still good, but he hasn't been the same since Floppa and Tangay left his line when he scored 50 that one season.

Several of those tandems could match the offensive play of Datsyuk and Zetterberg, but none could come even close to matching the defensive play. Which would make it a pretty decisive victory for the Euro Twins-- their defensive play is that good. It is a pretty rare thing.

Are you serious? Demitra/Gaborik most surely could give Pav/Hank a run for their money. Demitra/Gaborik are every bit as good defensively as Pav/Hank, no question.

Are YOU serious? Yeah Gabby has solid defensive awareness. And Demitra is no slouch. But it is absolutely not at the level of Hank or Pavel. Who has more takeaways? Hank and Pavel, thats who. And why? Because their puck handling abilities are superior to Gaborik and Demitra. Hense, Pavel and Hank are better defensively overall. And none of them can score with the consistency of Henrik Zetterberg. Despite Gaborik's 5 goal night. I guaruntee any unbiased-objective hockey mind would take Zetterberg and Datsyuk, over Demitra and Gaborik and day of the week and 30 times on sunday. For offense AND defense.

I am amazed every single game I watch those two play - by their defensive abilty. I have not felt that way about any other forward since Fedorov was in his prime.

Demitra and Gaborik play for defense-first, trapping, two great goalies - Minnesota... yet Gaborik with 34 pts has a +/- of 0 while Demitra with 19 pts has a +/- of -1. Compared to +14 and +20 of the Euro Twins. Granted, that is not even close to a tell-all stat, but I think it should be considered.
