Son of a Wing 1,644 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 Saw this posted on Kuklas Korner and thought I would share. Always knew he was one of the best puck handlers but this is just great to watch. I wonder how many takes they did. name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="373"></embed></object>&"> name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="373"></embed></object>&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" />
seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 That's been on the Warrior hockey website for a while. Regardless, he has disgusting skills. The center ice shots are sweet, but what really impresses me is the one-handed top corner shooting, because there's no chance in hell I could pull that off. BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 I've seen this video a while ago, great skills though. He's finally using them in game to game situations too... Much like the Pens days.

I can do that....well, obviously not as good, but I can get a one-handed backhander in the top shelf. While I believe he is one of, if not the best stickhandlers out there, I don't think the video really showed any of that. The rest of the stuff was pretty good, but the top corner shots from in close really are not that difficult. The shots from his knees, etc. way back at centre ice are pretty impressive though. I would like to know how much editing went into this though. He is not known as one of the better accuracy shooters so I would imagine there was a lot of takes. GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 Sammy could do it better than Kovalev.
SweWings 45 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 I've seen that vid before but it doesn't make it any less impressive... Amazing skill that guy has....
eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 I've always wondered why Kovalev isn't constantly dominating the league offensiely...I thought he was a better player than Jagr during Jagr's later Pittsburgh years.
Naslund19 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 That was a nice video! I think I remember seeing that on CBC or something during HNIC. Regardless quite impressive. My favorite was shooting the puck on top of the net when he was all the down at the other end of the ice.

There's no reason this guy shouldn't be a top 10 scorer in the league. He lacks character. I can't tell you how many times I've heard former players or GM's say on XM how he's the most talented hockey player in the league bar-none. What a waste. I can't tell you how many times I've heard former players or GM's say on XM how he's the most talented hockey player in the league bar-none. What a waste. But the problem is that a lot of analysts and fans confuse best stickhandler with most talented. You would be surprised at the number of vast number of sickly talented stickhandlers that exist on this plant, but lack the overall talent required to play in the NHL. If you want to watch the best displays of stickhandling, you will probably see it from a young NHL player, not from a seasoned vet. Has anyone noticed that Datsyuk doesn't try stickhandling as much as he did in his early years? As you gain experience, you learn that pretty much everyone in the league is a good stickhandler, but sometimes, easier, less flashy plays are much more effective. While Kovalev may be the best stickhandler out there for the past while, he lacks other skills. Not saying he doesn't have other skills, I'm just trying to explain why he isn't the leading scorer every year.

When's the last time Kovalev had a regular linemate who was anywhere near his skill level? I am not sure if it has ever happened where Kovy wasn't the most talented guy on his normal line. I can't think of any other great player who has never been put with a guy who was better than him at that point in time as a regular line. Mario Lemieux is the ONLY name that comes to mind where I can't think of him ever being outplayed by his linemates. Makes you wonder how good Kovalev could really have been with some consistency and a little bit of confidence from his coaches.

Without evening thinking too hard, I can come up with Crosby and Ovechkin as guys that played mostly with linemates nowhere near their skill level. Did Kovalev ever play on a line with Jagr?
