toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 Firing Ferguson is a good move, but simply replacing the GM isn't what everyone has been waiting for, changes need to be a little bit above the GM position.
Motorcity19 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 I'm pretty sure this isn't going to make a difference. I think the leafs need some major help and its going to take a very long time to change things up.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 This had to be done, but it's going to take a long time to clean up that mess. Maybe Kenny can go to the Leafs, while Yzerman takes over GM duties in Detroit. I wouldn't mind that.

SweWings 45 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 Not really unexpected, but the future is going to be painful for the Leafs and the team's fans. I still hold out hope they will buy-out a couple of contracts and have a season or two where they suck, let their young people play and get rid of dead weight. rage 24 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 (edited) http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=227906&hubname= John Ferguson Jr.'s tenure as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs has come to an end. Sources tell TSN the Maple Leafs informed Ferguson of his fate earlier this morning. Cliff Fletcher has been linked to much of the speculation regarding the team and the Globe and Mail is reporting the Maple Leafs are set to announce Fletcher as their interim general manager. The Leafs contacted a number of hockey management types last week to gauge their interest in the job and asked Fletcher if he was interested in taking over for the rest of the 2007-08 campaign. Related Info Power Rankings: Leafs #24 Fletcher, a Montreal native and Hockey Hall of Famer, was GM of the Leafs from 1991 to 1997. Didn't see this coming! Sure is about time. QFT This will help but MLSE has other problems. It seems as long as their money continues to pour in they continue to neglect their team.

Opie 308 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 (edited) Why on earth does Paul Maurice still have a job, I think had JFJ fired Maurice he may still have his job! Wings&Beer 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 From now till summer we will probably be hearing the Holland, Bowman, and Yzerman as new GM rumors. My thoughts exactly. Maybe we can get a pre-emptive denial. Either that, or do what they do in college football....a $4 million dollar penalty for leaving the organization while under contract. Either that, or do what they do in college football....a $4 million dollar penalty for leaving the organization while under contract. LOL! That might work, but we are talking about the all heavenly Leafs here. Who in their right mind wouldn't want that job??

Barrie 900 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 Firing Ferguson is fine, but the main thing is Leafs Ownership letting the new GM have full control of what happens to the team.

WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 Am I the only one who thinks it should be Maurice that gets the axe first? I don't think so. The Leaf's haven't quit on Maurice. As long as they keep going through these spurts of losing 5, 6, 7 in a row and then win 4, 5, 6 in a row, it shows that they still believe in Maurice's philosophy. BTW, the coach can only play with the hand he is dealt. They could bring in Bowman and the Leaf's still wouldn't make the playoffs because their defense is so horrendous. Edit: I just read that JFJ did try to fire Maurice but the Org. said NO!! Any leafs fans no if that is true, Link Yes, that is true. Ferguson tried to fire him awhile back, likely thinking that would help him keep his job. I disagree with you though, no way do I think Maurice should have been the one to go first. Maurice will lose his job eventually when everything is cleaned up and new people are controlling things, but I don't think Maurice is the problem, so he'll stick around for a little bit. Ferguson is definately the guy that had to go first, though maybe it should have been at the same time as replacing the President, etc.
Turkey 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 The way the Leafs are run by this mysterious cabal of backroom bosses just seems idiotic. These guys seem to be totally free of accountability and the only reason they get away with it is that the Leafs came with a built in following of die-hard fans. One person should be calling the shots. Not some weird mystery committee.
