I'm not usually one for these high-five threads, but I really don't think we've paid quite enough attention to just how well Helm has been filling his role these playoffs.

Coming into the second round, it was pretty much a given that our top six talent was going to be able to handle the Avs without many issues, but it's become very obvious that our depth goes well beyond when you watch our 3rd and 4th lines steamroll the way they have been. Whenever Helm is on the ice he's got bullet speed, an active stick, he's digging in the corner and winning all the battles, making plays and just generally keeping the Avs pinned down in their own zone. He's been such a pleasant surprise and I'm really rooting for him to grab a goal before this series is out. :siren:

Keep up the good work #43!:thumbup:

gotta think that in a couple of years Helm and Abdelkader are certainly going to be out new Draper and Maltby..

i'm loving this team at the moment, and the future seems to be getting brighter all the time. Deepest defense in the league, and we've still go players like Emmerton, Pyett, Smith and Mursak to graduate to the pro's..

I know that what is important right now is this run for the cup, but when I watch this team right now I can't help but think of the future. I don't know how Matlby breaks the lineup right now. Who among our forwards won't be around next year. Unless Dallas Drake retires if we win the cup, I don't know how you don't bring him back, he has been great so far in the playoffs. Downey might be the odd man out, but you still have guys like Abdelkader and Helm trying to make the lineup. I have to think, and hope, that Lilja is a goner. Now whether Stuart stays, I think Ericcson will stay up with the club. Needless to say, I think the future is very bright.

I love Helm. The first time I saw him play, I thought, "Who is that guy throwing hits and winning battles behind the net? Did he just get called up?" He really has been a nice surprise, and he deserves to be kept around.

Dude gets to loose pucks super-quick. Aggressive play, and the only reason I can't judge his defensive skills is because it seems like our fourth line is always doing damage in their zone when they're out.

Well for the record, Helm IS known for his defensive play. Its one of the reasons he gets hailed as the next Draper...with better hands.

The Medicine Hat Tigers are known for their defensive play. Willie Desjardiens teaches a very strong defensive system and he makes his players play that system.

Helm was brought through the system for 3 years, starting as a grinding centre and then moving into a top line role.

He has better wheels than Draper and better hands. He also has great leadership abilities, he was an A on the Tigers and his leadership has been noted on the Griffins.

This was my scouting report in '05 on Helm.

Darren Helm - Right Wing/Centre

Date of Birth: January 21, 1987

Hockey Age: 17

Hometown: St. Andrews, MB

Height: 6’ 0"

Weight: 170 lbs

NHL Status: Eligible 2005 Entry Draft

GP G A TP AP\PG PM PPG PPA SH +\-

62 8 12 20 0.32 21 0 0 0 5

Darren is a hard working grinder type of player that never gives up. He has the hands to score and to pass, but also will spend a lot of time in the other opposition's end cycling the puck. He also isn't scared to drop the mitts, rackign up a few fights this season. Darren is a rookie, but is playing on the 2nd line some games with Roman Psurny and Brett Robertson or with Kevin Undershute and Devyn Tremblay. Plays like a mixture of Kris Draper and Joe Sakic. Very likely to get drafted in the later rounds...5th on.

Finally, a young skilled Canadian in the lineup.

I mean, I love Swedes, but gotta keep it real sometimes.

I gotcha. The more links that you have to the players, the easier it is to cheer for them.

Great fill-in. Kopecky's loss hurts much less. He's been more effective overall than Kopy probably would be. He and Huddles are making the 4th line shine!

Helm, Huds, and D Mac were out best line in the 1st period of game 2, well at least until the Franzen show started. The kid has got some wheels.
