RedFX 48 Report post Posted April 29, 2008 Here's the story on NHL.com No suprises with AO or Malkin. Iginla suprised me a bit, he had a strong season, but I would've put others up there before him.
theman19 47 Report post Posted April 29, 2008 as i've said in earlier threads there's no way the NHL publicity machine gives malkin the hart before it can give crosby one.

AO will win it hands down. Malkin will get some votes but by making the playoffs AO walks with this one easy Edited April 29, 2008 by GordieSid&Ted

BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted April 29, 2008 I would have put Datsyuk before Iginla. A Selke nominee while finishing just 4th in scoring and 1st in +/-? That definitely screams MVP candidate. I'd almost put Nabokov or Lidstrom ahead of Iggy as well, but whatever, I like the guy so I won't be too miserable about this.
Reds4Life 51 Report post Posted April 29, 2008 (edited) AO wins. I'd nominate Lidstrom and Datsyuk instead of Iginla though. Edited April 29, 2008 by Reds4Life
RedWingsFanatic 4 Report post Posted April 29, 2008 Iginla is sort of a boring choice. Anyway, Ovechkin takes this in a landslide.

Guest GordieSid&Ted Report post Posted April 29, 2008 AO wins. I'd nominate Lidstrom and Datsyuk instead of Iginla though. Hey, i'm probably the biggest Datsyuk slappy in the universe but even I can admit that there ain't a whole lot to work with over there in Calgary. Iginla, IMO, doesn't have it much better than AO in regards to pretty much having to carry a team by yourself. He does have Kipper and Dion but AO has Mike Green and Huet and it wasn't until they got Huet that they really made the leap. It's not a sexy choice but I think Iginla is a reasonable choice. Wings are too stacked and we're too biased IMO towards guys like Nick, Dats and Z. We can deny it all day but we are biased, which is why we don't get to decide who the finalists are. Seriously, did anyone notice that Iggy scored 50 freaking goals? He did it awfully quietly this year. Just look at the Calgary lineup. Iggy had 98 points and a +27. Huselius had 66 points and Langkow was a +16 and those were the the next best numbers on the team. He carried the hell out of that team this year. A worthy pick IMO. You shoved balance right back into this thread. Iginla is a fine finalist. I think Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Lidstrom would have been good candidates too. Any of the top 3 on Ottawa played well enough that if they didn't collapse they could be finalists. A few more GP and Crosby probably would have been a choice as well (he had the second-best PPG among players with more than 15 games). But it really was Ovechkin's season. And then everybody else. I think it's 1-2 and then a five-way race for third, and that's good for the NHL, we need a number of superstars.

GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted April 29, 2008 Why are you guys surprised Iginla made it? He was one of the league leaders in scoring. I hate the guy too, but him making it isn't a big deal.
Guest GordieSid&Ted Report post Posted April 29, 2008 Why are you guys surprised Iginla made it? He was one of the league leaders in scoring. I hate the guy too, but him making it isn't a big deal. I don't think surprise has anything to do with it. More like bitterness that it wasn't Dats or Lids or even Z. All you have to do is look at the numbers posted by each player, look at the supporting cast and you can come to a pretty rational conclusion that without Iginla, the Flames have 2 great players and not much else. Huselius and Langkow are decent but they can't nor won't ever carry a team. The Wings are stacked. Doesn't mean our guys didn't have great seasons or aren't amongst the elite in the game. Hell, I call Dats the best player in the league. It just means they were not more valuable to Detroit than Iggy was to Calgary. Furthermore, no single Red Wing could have impacted our season to a greater extent than Ovechkin impacted the Caps. Any one of our big 3 could go down and we're still an elite team that makes the playoffs and probably wins the central. Without AO or Iggy, those teams are battling for who picks first in the draft. Ok, maybe not first but can you say "lottery pick"? When Iggy scores 32 more points than the 2nd highest scorer on the team, bags 50 goals, posts a +27 which is nearly double the next best guy then you are the textbook definition of Most Valuable Player to your team. Doggy 130 Report post Posted April 29, 2008 It's ridiculous to think Datsyuk should get a nom ahead of Jarome Iginla. He's infinitely more valuable to his hockey club. The Flames would probably be in the lottery for no. 1 draft pick without him.

Don Cherry would probably commit suicide if that happened.
bluejackets61 0 Report post Posted April 30, 2008 I'm also surprised with Iggys nomination. I know he's a great leader because I hear about it from my friends who support the flames all the time, but watching calgary games I notice he's either an elite factor or a non factor, theres not a whole lot between. I guess it doesn't help when Keenan benches his for periods at a time when he's not impressed by his play. DOWN WITH IRON MIKE in the new nhl.
