As a follow-up to the talk about Sweden, consider this: Zetterberg, Lidstrom, Holmstrom, Franzen, Lilja, Ericsson, etc. could be playing on that team. It ought to be a Swedish tradition for casual hockey fans from Sweden to watch the WCF this year. :D

(Taking nothing away from Ekman, Backstrom, Jonsson, Nilsson, ... but the Wings are probably deeper with Swedish talent than this team.)

(Didn't put Olympic gold medalists Kronwall and Sammy, whoops.)

I was thinking, when I looked at the Swedish roster.....there isn't a single Swedish Red Wing who wouldn't make that team.

I was talking about the current roster, not a stacked roster of the best Swedes in the world. I mean, Niclas Wallin? Yikes.

Edit for quick update: holy crap, Latvia needs a mercy killing right now....down 7-0 to Canada and it's not even the 3rd yet.

USA knocked off Slovenia in Red Wings fashion....outshot them 37-12 in a 5-1 game. Good early start. Tuesday's gonna be big.

Interesting: Denmark didn't seem to have much trouble with Italy. They seem to be starting to make a name for themselves in international play.....might we see the Danes in 2010 in Vancouver for their first ever Olympic tourney?

Dany Heatley has been an absolute beast so far,I bet Sens fans are wondering where that was two weeks ago.

He has also broken Stevie's record for most points by a Canadian in World Championships with 40 (Stevie had 39).

About the world rankings, the top 9 teams after the '08 Championships get an automatic berth to the Olympics. Right now the big 7 cannot fall out of top 9. Teams 19 through 30 will play a qualification tournament in November '08 - the top three will join 10 through 18 in a second tournament later on, and the top three from there qualify for the Olympics.

Russia, by the way: Screwed. Only one healthy goalie left on the roster. They're not going to medal with Mikhail Biryukov in net. (Who? Yeah.) That powerful offense should probably carry them to the quarterfinals but they may well lose right then and there.

That's what I'm thinking too. You're not going to win medals without a good goalie and the one Russia has remaining plays somewhere in Russia's 2nd league. Not to mention goaltending has never actually been one of Russia's strengths to begin with.

Yaaahuuu..

Switzerland beats Belarus 2 : 1

My impressions: A very strong Swiss team at the first half of the game and also with many unused chances! Belarus took by far too many "stupid" penalties which is sad out of their point of view! In the 3rd the teams were pretty much even.. at the end Belarus set up a lot of pressure like they had to, but Gerber could shut the door.

Not a good 1st period from the Finns.

<_<

Sloppy defending, stupid penalties & Vehanen in goal did the trick.

Yeah, it sucked. And the 2nd ain't lookin any better either, that's not even hockey, it's bs. That's what it is.

Oh yeah, Koivu will join the team !

They will most likely add Nabokov to their roster..so they will actually be better team.

Russia might be able to add Nabokov. I forgot that his team was eliminated. Heh heh. If they do, they'll be even scarier than before.

I wish the American team would look into adding Chris Higgins now that the Habs are done. It wouldn't hurt.
