Coolio Mendez 7 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 (edited) I for one think the sea of red, or any other color looks sweet!! It makes the fan base look intimidating regardless of the color. Why do the Wings/Detroit not promote this, or at least invest in giving out red T-shirts instead of the white towels, or the red shiny pom-poms (that have absolutely no effect). I know it may be a little pricey but it would be worth it. It may cover up the empty seats Heres a pic of Calgary's sea of red. http://dylan.mikrotron.com/Gallery/000_Slu...%20of%20Red.jpg What do you think? Yay/Nay Why? stud_defenseman 1 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 its been done before... what we need is a sea of flesh...everyone goes without a shirt! Women included! Have they not been selling out this post-season, I thought they sold out the first ones against nashville.
Chaldean 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 Sounds like a good idea. The playoff tickets are pretty expensive, so I dont know why the team can't afford to have a t-shirt included in their purchase of their tickets.

Have they not been selling out this post-season, I thought they sold out the first ones against nashville. According to Holland they were sold out, but game 1 against Colorado looked like they could have fit at least 2,000 people with all the empty seats in the lower deck. This Is Bida 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 egh, sold out does NOT mean everyone actually SHOWS UP! They can sell out all playoffs but there is definitely not a full arena packed in there. Kind of frustrating considering all these business people have lower bowl tickets and just don't go! as for the sea of red, good GOD i'll never understand why the Wings people don't do this. my girlfriend was commenting on how incredible it was while I was watching a Calgary game. she couldn't believe how cool it was. sjradio 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 It's all just a cheap rip off from the true fan playoff tradition. The White out in Winnipeg... That's the only place where it should be pushed. And sorry Phoenix, just because you stole the Jets, it doesn't mean that the White Out comes with you. I for one would rather have 20,000 people show up and cheer, rather than what everybody is going to wear. Red in Washington, Calgary, Ottawa had it too. Philly has Orange. Pittsburgh was trying white Dallas wants all fans to wear black. Just pass out the towels or pom poms and that is fine with me.
theman19 47 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 to me the octipi on the rink is just fine for intimidation. Worked for 50+ years, will work long after bettman is gone as well.
HockeyCrazy3033 168 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 They've sold out all 5 playoff home games so far. Anyways, I always thought it'd be awesome if everyone wore red and then were given white towels. It would be SAWEET.

betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 I'd love to see it and can't understand why they don't do it! Because it's Calgary's thing, not ours. I like to think we have enough traditions of our own without having to rip off someone else. It's beneath us to gank someone else's tradition, especially when we 1) have a much better tradition with the octopus (people, please please please stop spelling it "octipi"!) and 2) we think it's silly that other teams try to copy it. So why copy them?
Guest nutz2u Report post Posted May 3, 2008 I wondered why they wouldn't at least give out red rags or pom poms, waving white has always signaled surrender to me.

shoe 165 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 In deffence to why we dont do it it could be this. There are many a fans who have jerseys some home colours some away colours, I myself have the current away coloured jersey and that is what i would want to wear to a game, If they called for a sea of red I might look kind of out of place in my lone white jersey but, that wouldnt be the case cause I know Im not the only guy who has a white jersey that would want to wear it and mess up a sea of red. On a side note in the past there was a game Im not sure who they played or what arena it was in but there was this red balloon that was bounced around in the crowd just about the whole game it made a few tv appearances i have a feeling it was vs Toronto back in the day. To add to ideas to whole whole pass out t shirts towels pom poms how about red or white curly haired clown wigs.

Octopuses is also acceptable for more than 1. And not everybody can run spell check in their browser. link So if we're not about to rip off other fans traditions. No more towels, pompoms, bang sticks, etc. I do remember, and could be mistaken, Detroit having white-outs as well while lights were the home jersey.
BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 Do what the Orlando Magic does... Half of the bleachers are red, while the other half is white. Orlando does it with blue and white. It's simple divide the bleachers and on the tickets it will say wear red, and the other, it will say wear white. Far fetched, but the Magic do it, it's cool. No more towels, pompoms, bang sticks, etc. I do remember, and could be mistaken, Detroit having white-outs as well while lights were the home jersey. Doesn't mean I thought white-outs were a good idea either. Certainly didn't manage to get them to work as well as they used to in Winnipeg. Pompoms and thundersticks aren't exactly another team's tradition. Way too widespread. I suppose you could say towels belong to the Pittsburgh Steelers. I wouldn't really have a cow if they stopped showing up at the Joe. But the theme of this thread is, "hey, look how cool it is when Calgary does it, let's do it too." That's pretty specifically tradition-borrowing. Calgary has their C of Red. We chuck octopi. It was dumb when Oilers' fans decided to throw beef, and it would be dumb if we copied Calgary. Doing what the Orlando Magic do isn't any better. I don't see why we can't be happy with our octopi, why we need to copycat other fans too.
IceMunkee 15 Report post Posted May 3, 2008 I'd love to see it and can't understand why they don't do it! They tried it last year when the slogan was seeing red. They asked all the fans to wear red to the games. I went to the games and barely anyone wore red. All the big money grippers were there in thier nautica polo's and banana republic slacks. It would be impossible here in Detroit.

Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted May 4, 2008 I hate to break this argument out, but technically, octopuses is the correct plural, not octopi. Octopi is a misconception.. it's used with the assumption that octopus is latin, thus making the masculine plural transition from octopus to octopi. However, it is not, it is latinized greek.. thus, the actual proper modernized plural would be octopuses. The proper latinized greek plural would actually be octopodes, but it's usually argued as pedantic--thus, octopuses, not octopodes, and certainly not octopi. (In fact, if you look at the red underlining auto spell checker in here.. though the red is hard to see, octopuses is the only one of the three that it doesn't underline)
