10 Minute Misconduct 104 Report post Posted May 10, 2008 The Detroit Red Wings on Saturday signed 24-year-old left win Ville Leino of Finland to a one-year entry level contract. Leino played for Jokerit of the Finnish Elite League this season and was the team’s leading scorer with 77 points in 55 games. He registered 28 goals and 49 assists. http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news;_ylt=A...t&type=lgns

Shockwave180 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2008 Looks like a good signing. It's not like the Wings' scouting department has given us any reason to doubt them in the past.
Hockeytown Red Wings 245 Report post Posted May 10, 2008 1 year? It's try out. You're not gonna give an unknown guy a 5 year contract.
FinWing 26 Report post Posted May 10, 2008 It's try out. You're not gonna give an unknown guy a 5 year contract. I got the impression that the only contract option for Leino was a one-year entry level contract. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can shed some light on this. Earthhuman 8 Report post Posted May 10, 2008 (edited) It's try out. You're not gonna give an unknown guy a 5 year contract. Since he's 24, he only had to accept 1 year at entry-level. I'm not sure he could have taken more than 1 year. Probably trying to secure his financial future, anyway. Edited May 10, 2008 by Earthhuman
FinRedWing 172 Report post Posted May 10, 2008 I think he has the potential to be a good 2nd liner. He was quite dominating last season. Dangerous 5 on 5 & on the PP. Skillful, tough to knock off the puck and a great passer as well as scorer. Expecting something like 25G 40A in the future, given the opportunity. I really haven't seen enough of Brunnstrom to make accurate comparisons, but at least Leino's stats blow him away.
irishtemper14+25 11 Report post Posted May 10, 2008 I gurantee this guy gets 10 more pts if he plays on our 3rd/4th lines next yr than brunstrom does on dallas' 1st/2nd
Swede40 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2008 I wonder if he got the 1 month guarantee like Fabian was given. The only good thing about this is if he pulls a Rhyno and wants to go home.

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted May 11, 2008 Awesome news! More forward depth, this can only be good. I'm way past the stage for getting excited over signings like this. The odds are overwhelmingly that he doesn't play at all and he ends up sucking in the NHL. That being said I still root for him and hope he proves to be great depth. It's just that teams have been burned more than not in picking up a foreign league player to join their team.
Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted May 11, 2008 (edited) I am excited about this and I tell you why. Fabin Brunstrom was getting all the hype for breaking out and being a superstar and this kid did a very simular feat. I am not saying he will be better then Fabin, and it looks like Vilie was plan B, I am saying that this kid can play. I actually hoped not too long ago that we signed both of these late bloomers as it would be the perfect timing to fill out the Forward depth and see what they had before making a call on some of our farm prospects. Plus isn't the Wings the team that always gets a plan B guy and makes him look like class A? Answer: Yes. From the very little I saw of this kid, which consisted of a 40 second highlight reel I can't seem to find right now, he looked better then Val.... Of course I have seen alot more of Val then a 40 second highlight so this says nothing. The guy is fairly big, he has a mean streak in him, has good hands and hockey sense, plus he is a two way player. Sounds like a addition for the Red Wings. In the very least it will give me two players to scout against each other in the coming years. Edited May 11, 2008 by Majsheppard

Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted May 11, 2008 The other upside to this story is that Leino has played for his country, whereas Brunnstrom still has that step to make.
