I noticed yesterday that Shane Doan wears number 19 for team Canada. I thought Wayne decided to retire that number of Yzerman did not participate in the Olympics... Does anyone know anything about this?

It wasnt retired. When Stevie announced he'd miss the Olympics, Joe Sakic had the option of switching to 19, but he kept 91 out of respect for Stevie. The rest of the team did the same.

TBH, I don't believe that's completely accurate. When Stevie announced he'd miss the Olympics Gretzky took the number out of contention for that Olympic year out of respect for Stevie. Sakic, Doan and Thornton didn't have the chance to wear their coveted 19.

I thought that it was just for the Torino Olympics. Even so, there are so many good players that wear number 19, I can't see Yzerman being a stickler about it. He probably wanted Doan, Spezza, or whoever to wear 19 anyways.

There have been so many good players for Canada, it would be ridiculous to start retiring all the numbers.

Even if Yzerman is the all-time leading scorer for Canada in IIHF competition?

Yes, even if, but it doesn't matter, since he isn't, at least I do not think he is.

According to Yzerman's wiki page, he has 55 pts for Team Canada in international play

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Yzerman...ernational_play

Heatley, according to my stats has 57, see below:

World Juniors - 9

World Cup - 2

Olympics - 3

World Championships - 43

Not even sure if Heatley is the leader overall, I haven't tried to search too deeply. I know Heatley is the leader in terms of World Championships (he passed Yzerman last week, who has 39).

No, I think he had it right. Sakic, as the next most "senior" player, had the opportunity to wear the number if he wanted. However, having worn 91 in the 2002 Olympics and out of respect for Yzerman, Sakic indicated he would not wear 19. Having done so, it would have been pretty hard for anyone else to step up and say they would. To the best of my knowledge, Hockey Canada has never retired any numbers.

I never said the number was retired, but the report I remember stated that Gretzky took the number out of contention for that years Olympics alone.

And I recall a newspaper article saying that Sakic was offered his normal number. ;)

At least we can agree he didn't wear it.
