jawbreaker 0 Report post Posted May 15, 2008 I read that Yashin is willing to come back. Who is ready to pay the bucks? Who needs first/second line center? I think that Atlanta should/could be considering this option. They need some offense, which begins and ends with Kovalchuk. Plus, they have some room under the cap. They could give him Holik's money. If Yashin can stay healthy, and find even a slight motivation, then Yashin + Kovalchuk could be pretty damn scary duo. Other crappy teams probably don't need him (ok... Islanders need some firepower, but this is unreal). Thoughts?
Chris L 0 Report post Posted May 15, 2008 What is with this trend of retired players comming back? Hasek, Forsberg now Yashin? Maybe Gretzsky or Messier will come back too. Why not? The Rangers, clearly, need more superstars. Maybe we should start a retired-and-washed-up-but-now-unretired pool.

betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted May 15, 2008 did he retire, or did he just go to play in Russia? He spent this last season playing in Russia. I think he'd make a fine second-line option for a team looking to make that jump into the lower playoff seeds, or from the lower seeds into some contention. Somewhere like Atlanta or Phoenix. Someone with less to lose, because investing several million in the guy is probably risky.
joshy207 156 Report post Posted May 15, 2008 Maybe someone will offer him a contract. I think it would be a low base salary with lots of incentives. Then again, maybe not. Yashin doesn't like breaking a sweat.
eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted May 15, 2008 Yashin would be a good fit in most markets if he still has the kind of skill he had two years ago. Why? He's a big, strong, skilled centerman capable of using his strength to create scoring opportunities. That would be useful anywhere. Think Robert Lang, but closer to his peak, and with a higher peak to begin with. Yashin would fit well on most NHL teams if a reasonable contract could be worked out. Turkey 0 Report post Posted May 15, 2008 Yashin will have to suck it up and not get paid a budgillion dollars before he'll be going anywhere. I bet he makes more if he stays in Russia. My guess is that he thinks his accomplishments there last season will earn him a paycheck. What he fails to account for is the fact that he is a known underachiever in the NHL who took big bucks and then played a lazy game with the Islanders. I think that will be just as significant for his earning power as his performance in Russia was. Then again, maybe he's turned over a new leaf. If so I'll eat crow. Speaking of Leafs...is that a potential home for Yashin?
Guest Crymson Report post Posted May 15, 2008 (edited) did he retire, or did he just go to play in Russia? He left the NHL in a fit of spite after nobody would give him $3m+ per year. This was, of course, immediately after he received his massive buyout from the Islanders. He's a dick. Edited May 15, 2008 by Crymson
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted May 15, 2008 apparently he was league MVP with 43 pts in 56 games. Was he really the MVP? Not that scoring is everything, but he had nowhere near the stats of the top scorers.
Rick 42 Report post Posted May 15, 2008 Was he really the MVP? Not that scoring is everything, but he had nowhere near the stats of the top scorers. I believe so. At least thats what a few articles I've read have stated. http://www.hockeyjournal.com/Article.php?ArtID=439672 Before Alexei Yashin left to play in Russia with Yaroslavl, one of AY’s close friends told us that if he plays well overseas, it will enable him to return in 2008-09 as an NHLer. Yash played better than well – leading playoff scorer, league MVP – and now NHL clubs are inquiring. If the offer isn’t appetizing, Yashin has a deal on the table to play again for Yaroslavl. …

DaKineMaui 8 Report post Posted May 16, 2008 I often wonder how the new young kid, narrowly missing an NHL roster spot for his second or third year, on the brink of making the bigs, feels about Yashin. To watch him urinate on multi-million dollar contracts......Would drive me bonkers if I was one of those kids.
