Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted May 27, 2008 There weren't any Wings close. By the time they get there to retaliate, it definitely becomes a penalty. That could possibly result in a power play and/or goal by the Deadbirds. Remember, the refs sometimes miss the 1st contact but they usually see the 2nd. The Wings to needs to stick up for each other, but in that instance (as s***ty as it was) the right move was to let it go. Well, to be more specific, I was thinking something along the lines of getting up in his face on his next shift.

Misty Belle 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2008 . He is not gonna decide not to punch someone just because there's a chance he'll get facewashed for it. nobody's talking about facewashing him, you really don't get it
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted May 27, 2008 nobody's talking about facewashing him, you really don't get it His point is that we have no fighters on this squad. And no one is going to give anything more than a facewash if it comes down to it. Gary Roberts is as much piss and vinegar as Chelios is, with a knack for a good fight in him still. Any of our guys drops em clean with Roberts and at best we're in for a draw. You know what that does? Energize the Pens. Gary Roberts was a healthy scratch last game. Any player he fights with, hes going to be less important to the Pens going to the box than whatever player he takes with him. Dont give the Pens anything, anything to latch on to. The Granddaddy and assistant captain of your team getting down and dirty with plenty of time left on the clock wouldve gotten that Penguins bench buzzing. sean 19 Report post Posted May 27, 2008 don cherry is like the casual fan liason imo. gives less than expert fans a reason to tune in. i see no problem with this, really. it is like college football. football gives everyday people a way i think to contribute/support universities in a way which makes sense to them. you couldn't really sell too many tickets for a biology fair you know. similarly if the intermission guys rambled about the pros/cons of playing lilja or chelios i think the casual fans would be bored. unforunately for the nhl haters (me included) they are kinda smart enough to know that we're going to watch regardless of what sort of elementary or even hockey humorish crap they put on in the intermission. is this a stupid post im pretty tired atm. Doggy 130 Report post Posted May 27, 2008 He hates us because most of our players are European. Detroit is actually his second favourite American team behind his favourite team Boston (obviously). He's also said in the past that Detroit is very hard to hate.

And apparently Pasha can deck someone should the need arise. He's sorta like Captain Hockey. "Lady Byng! Selke! President's, Campbell, Stanley!" "By your powers combined, I am Captain Hockey!" *punches out evil villain Gary Roberts* Sorry if noone gets the reference XD

The Granddaddy and assistant captain of your team getting down and dirty with plenty of time left on the clock wouldve gotten that Penguins bench buzzing. Precisely. The only reason Roberts threw that punch is because it was the only thing left he could do. He and his team got shut out twice. They can't outskate, can't outwork, can't outhustle, can't outshoot, can't outthink, and can't outscore the Wings. So why bring it down to their level? Besides, since when did we not "retaliate" during that game? We mixed it up when they half-assedly ran our goalie. We mixed it up when Malone hit Zetterberg after the whistle (AND IT COST US A POWER PLAY, when the outcome was still in doubt.) And what did that get us? They still tried to make it chippy. And i can't believe that Melrose just said Detroit is the new face of the NHL. Did hell just freeze over? Again, take what Cherry says with a grain of salt. He's passionate and outspoken. He likes seeing the game played a certain way. Sometimes that passion causes him to make statements out of left field. I like him b/c he has pizzazz, he's entertaining, he's passionate about the game, and yes might even say stuff to bring a little friendly controversy. Again, the bruhaha people have with him in here I will never fully understand. Why the disliking of him?

zaxx 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2008 I love these forums but there are always two topics that come up far too often, and both at totally wrong: 1. We lost one game so we should trade player X because it is all his fault (So much drama from hockey fans, calm down a little) 2. Don Cherry is a XXX, because he said something stupid! This topic falls under category #2. Don Cherry is a very smart hockey analyst and despite his gruff and abrasive methods of stating facts he is usually correct. However on these forums people seem to hear what Don says differently then what was actually spoken. Don never called anyone on Detroit a wuss or a pansy or anything. He simply stated that someone should have went after Roberts for the cheap shot on Franzen. I agree with him, but only to a point. Roberts threw a fist to the head of the Mule, and it was a difficult play to see. I am sure it hurt the Mule but he took a few seconds to react. This drew the penalty, and once the refs hand goes up there is no point in taking revenge on Roberts, at that point. Take his number and get him later (like when you are up 3 - 0). I think if Mule went down right away and the refs hand did not go up then someone would have went after Roberts. Also Don Cherry does not hate European players. He loves tough, gritty players and until recently most players who play that style were Canadian. Detroit's team is showing that European players can play the gritty game also, and Don is happy to see that. He loves the grit regardless of the source. Remember folks there is a good reason Lidstrom will be the first European born player to captain a team to the cup, grit and toughness wins cups and our boys have it. Stop jumping to conclusions, listen to what Cherry has to say and do not overreact to his words. He enjoys the Wings as much as anyone and if we keep going with this whiny reaction to his comments, we are going to look like Montreal fans. Montreal vs Boston first round the Montreal press and fans complained in the papers and to the CBC that Don Cherry was cheering for Boston instead of for the Habs. Boo-freaking-hoo, Cherry can cheer for whomever he wants, especially when the team happens to be the one he coached for several years. Suck it up people, not everyone will cheer for our team 100% of the time.

WingNutt 12 Report post Posted May 27, 2008 (edited) Thosands of Canadian hockey players, viewers, and coaches all respect Don Cherry, the guy is a Canadian legend or is he? The more and more you listen to Don, the more you can tell he is just a bias Canadian "Goon Encouraging" ex coach. The guy can't say anything good about anyone unless they are Canadian, As we all know last game Pavel Datsyuk played amazing as usual and also stood up for some of his teammates, So what does Don Cherry do?? he says he didn't really punch him and mocks him on national television, all the while wearing a Lime Green suit. Yeah I'm sure thats a guy I would want to be for a ambassador of hockey for my country. I think someone is still a little bit bitter about Russia defeating Canada in the World Championship. also notice how he bashes Malkin for his statement of saying he was tired. If it would have been Crosby saying he was tired it would be a different story. Bias as can be and that means I give him no respect. kylee 727 Report post Posted May 27, 2008 let me say this, and this is coming from a don cherry fan. what he said about datsyuk really got under my skin. this is the 2nd time he's basically mocked Pavel in two playoff years in a row. Cherry clearly prefers Canadian type hockey, but when Euros do it, it just seems all wrong to him. when Steve (forgot the last name) from sportscenter mentioned to Cherry how Datsyuk was retaliating with punches Cherry literally waved it off and rolled his eyes. i like him usually, but theres NO WAY i can defend him on this one... Opie 308 Report post Posted May 27, 2008 I love how some of you think that the fear of getting punched in the face will stop a hockey player from doing anything. How many players get face washed, forearmed, or punched in a scrum every game. Earlier in the year it was some one punch Tootoo that will stop him. NO IT WON"T! To Gary Roberts getting punched in the face is like me walking around my apartment barefoot and stubbing my toe. Does it stop me from walking around barefoot again, NO! There is a reason why some teams do this stuff to Detroit, to get them off of their game. Because when Detroit is firing on all cylinders they are a very hard team to beat, so you try to rough up Mule, thinking it may slow him down, you try to hit Ozzie, you try to get Zetterberg off of his game!!! This is the post season, the way you send a message is to send a team home, not by gooning it up! Misty Belle is right, in the post season only one thing matters and that my friends is the scoreboard! OH and Cherry is a tool, he is there strictly for comedic value, don't take what he says too seriously!
