We always bag on the refs, so.....

Since we constantly ***** about the refs but rarely notice when they do things right, it's only right to acknowledge when we're the beneficiary of good and proper refereeing. Hats off to Marc Joannette for not blowing a premature whistle, and for being the only person in the entire arena who knew exactly where the puck was between the time Hank shot it and the time it went in. I'll never forget the emphatic goal indication in the midst of the chaos that was going on. One of the hugest moments of the series.

That goal and whole situation scared the s*** out of me.

I was watching on nbc, but with the tornados all around last night it was split screen with the weatherman blabbering the. ENTIRE. GAME. LONG. so in the chat people started freaking out about goal, no goal, and I see the replay but can't hear what's being said. I saw the point, but had no idea whether there was a whistle by the other guy or not, but yeah. Stressful.

That Joannette guy is alright. The rest can do as Doggy suggests...

Beautifully stated.

Let's also give kudos for not giving a phantom interference call on Holmstrom on Rafalski's PP goal since we are a tad bit touchy on that subject.

I was surprised when O'Hallaren wave off the goal from wherever he was! Did anyone else see homer look over at the ref to make sure it wasn't waved off before celebrating?

I agree... when it really counted, they got it right!!!

Yes, that was an important correct call, and Joanette deserves credit for making it.

It's no small thing to get me feeling like the officiating was almost decisive in a playoff series. I'm the guy, as most of you know, who more often than not sounds the lone voice of dissent when that type of talk starts here. But Jesus F**king Christ, in this series? Unbelievable stuff. Two 5 on 3s against, none for. Calls made in critical late game or OT situations that, if made all game long, would have resulted in 350 PIMs per game. Guys doing nothing more than going hard to the net and getting penalties for it. Standing outside the crease and getting whistled for being inside it. And that's not even to mention the no-calls.

I don't think it's an anti-Red Wings thing (I'm holding onto that hope by a string), but it sure seemed like extending the series as long as possible occurred to someone. I hope I'm wrong, but it's not often that the winning team and its fans are still bitter after hoisting the Stanley Cup. Even the players were talking about it in the dressing room after the game. Did anyone see the mock interview of Osgood by McCarty?

And all this against a team that has the puck pretty much all the time? What's wrong with this picture? I posted a blog a few months ago that talked about the way teams like the Ducks benefit from playing physical because if every penalty they commit was called, they'd be in the box all game long. Well, I think the converse works against the Wings. They have the puck so much that if they called all the penalties against them, they'd have the man advantage half the game.

Okay, I'm done. :)

Yeah that was a nice job by the ref, but after the ticky-tac hook that lead to the Penguins second goal and then the blatant non call on Datsyuk being tripped in the neutral zone that lead to the last chance with seconds left pretty much blew any good will I had built up.

Sometimes it's pretty hard for them to do the job correctly, especially in an uncertain situation like that. We'd be blasting the s*** outta Joannette if he screwed it up. I would be. So why not the opposite when he gets it right?

Amusing, by the way - did anyone see, during the little montage at the very end of the NBC broadcast, the pump-me-up circle and the fist/chest bumps the refs did? I thought that was damn funny.

Oh, and yes: Every single goal the Wings scored this game, I checked the refs before I celebrated, same as Homer. Especially the Flip one. When the Wings are going hard at the net, you never know any more.

Punctuated by "GO PENS!" shouts, no doubt.

Kidding! I kid. :)

All I could think of when I read the subtitle of this thread on the main topic list was:

"Here's to you, Mr.-Referee-that-doesn't-blow-the-whistle-premature-on-the-Stanley-Cup-winning-goal-Guy..."

I am very happy he got the call right. The great thing about two refs was that he was able to be behind the goal and see it loose. With one ref he might not have seen it and blown it down. now who was the dumb SOB who called Huds for that cheap call with under 2:00 to go? You call that weak crap with the Cup on the line?!? And then Pavel gets tripped up clearyly int he last 20 seconds or so and no call at center ice?!? Ozzie, while drunk mind you but still, said he thought the refs were trying to get it to game 7 and "the guys in NY probably aren't very happy about this ending." He said that on channel 4 late last night. I hope they weren't trying to give it to them but my conspiracy theorist hat was on there for sure.

Very true.

when that goal was scored, I thought for certain the other ref probably blew his whistle and stopped the play before it could be counted as a goal. Luckily Joanette was right where he should've been and watched it the whole way. I had no idea what happened, then I see him pointing at the net.

QFMFT!

I was also one of the ones saying there is no conspiracy here. The Wings do not regularly get screwed by the refs. But good lord, I sure looked wrong after some of the calls this series.

Screw the refs, pedophile Betty and all the "Experts" even with all the help they gave "The Face of Hockey" we still beat their ass soundly. The only reason the scores were close in the last 3 games was because the Wings were playing 5 on7.

Well, yes, he did that call right - however, despite the popular conception here that he was the only one to see it, that's not the case. Watch it with the original audio, and you can hear the volume of screaming (more like shrieking actually) rising as the pens fans behind the goal realise the puck has dribbled through.

If they'd not called that BS hook on Hudler, and then called the trip on Datsyuk, I'd be much happier. Still bitter that the ending closer than it should have been <_<
