Lord Stanley's Summer Tour 2008

Recommended Posts

A request came in that I start a thread in which members that have spotted the Stanley Cup can post about its whereabouts this summer.

So if you see the Stanley Cup while it's traveling the world this summer post about it here!

I'd like to keep outside comments to a minimum (read: none ;)) just so we can keep a clean log of where the Cup has been, etc.

Thanks and keep your eyes open!

Draper and Rafalski had it at Saturday's (6/7) Tigers game. They threw out the first pitch with the cup setting in the infield. Low and behold, the Tigers won and they won again on Sunday (a little good luck rubbing off?). They got the biggest ovation of the day until the 8th inning - and less than half the crowd had filled in yet. After that, they took it into the stands in the sections directly behind home plate -- very cool.

Here is a pic of Hank with the Cup at Cheli's.

Side note: A friend in Detroit that sent me this pic told me that Lebda dropped it at Chelli"s the other night and they had to have it repaired. Not sure if this is fact, anyone know?

cup's in tucson w/ozzie (woo!) and mitch album (ick!).

mister illitch really is a hell of a guy, isn't he?

we're lucky to have him.

TUCSON, Ariz., June 11, 2008 – The Stanley Cup, the treasured trophy awarded each year to the National Hockey League champions, made a special visit to Augie and Lynne Nieto’s home today.

The cup’s visit was the result of a promise made to Augie by Detroit Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch that if his team won the championship, he’d bring the trophy to the Nieto’s home. The Red Wings secured the cup for the fourth time in 11 seasons when they beat the Pittsburgh Penguins on June 5.

Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood accompanied the cup, and several members of the Los Angeles media covered the visit.

Watch coverage of the visit on KCAL 9, which broadcasts the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon in Los Angeles: http://www.cbs2.com/video/?id=69133@kcbs.dayport.com

Augie was introduced to Ilitch by Mitch Albom, author of the bestselling book “Tuesdays with Morrie.” Albom was there for the cup visit, but Ilitch couldn’t make it. However, he called the Nietos while the trophy was there. Augie interviewed Ilitch and other notable business leaders for his upcoming book, “Reciprocity, Incorporated.”

Ilitch was so moved by Augie and his determination to cure ALS that he made the promise about the cup, and later sent donations to Augie’s Quest from his three businesses: $100,000 from the Detroit Tigers, $100,000 from Little Caesar’s Pizza, and $50,000 from the Red Wings.

Lidström will come to my home town this monday to recieve a little tribute. I haven't been following the cups progress so far but am I right thinking he won't have the cup with him? It seems kinda fast to get it out of the country ;)

I'll see if I can get some pictures anyways.

(Sorry if this is considered clutter.)

IF anyone has any leads as to were the cup may be in the future please do tell. It is a goal of mine to get a pic of me and the cup.

It was up at the Dominator store in Birmingham on Saturday. Found out that morning and of course i couldn't make it there in time. Heard that Dom was signing as well there.

Cup was at Little Italy in Northville on Friday - Ken Holland brought it in! We've seen him dine there before, so it wasn't a surprise.

That same night, Ozzie and Drapes were spotted with an unidentified cohort at a couple of downtown Plymouth bars. Cup was not in tow, but it did remind me that I have to move back to Plymouth ASAP!

"On Father's Day, the Stanley Cup trekked over to Comerica Park to watch the American League Detroit Tigers host the Los Angeles Dodgers of the National League in the Ilitch suite overlooking homeplate. This was the Stanley Cup's second visit to a Tigers' game since the Red Wings won the championship on June 4.

With much of his family surrounding him in the box, Mike Ilitch had the Stanley Cup seated right beside him on a matching chair, almost like two old friends hanging out at the ballpark (of course, with this being Detroit's fourth Stanley Cup championship since the Ilitches purchased the team, they really ARE old friends!). Mike clapped excitedly in the sixth inning as Marcus Thames and Brandon Inge hit back-to-back homers for the Tigers. The game ended in a 5-4 win for the Tigers over the Dodgers."

Stanley's back in town

Posted by George James Malik June 18, 2008 18:19PM

Categories: 2008 Stanley Cup Championship

The Stanley Cup is back in Detroit, and the Free Press's Steve Neavling says that Stanley spent Wednesday morning brightening up the Macomb County Commissioners' finance meeting:

June 18, Detroit Free Press: [C]ommissioners got a reprieve from crunching numbers at their finance committee meeting this morning when the vice president of the Detroit Red Wings presented the shiny Stanley Cup.

Commissioners, employees and their families lined up outside a conference room in the County Administration Building in Mt. Clemens for photos with the Stanley Cup, which the Red Wings won this month.

"It was really special," said Commissioner Pete Lund, R-Shelby Township, who posed for a photo of the Stanley Cup with his two daughters, ages 9 and 12. "It was a great memory for me and will be for my kids for a long time to come."

Christopher Ilitch, vice president of the Red Wings, unveiled the Stanley Cup to officials and employees.

Stanley's probably headed to the NHL Entry Draft this weekend, but it's highly likely that he'll spend a few days in Detroit next week before making his round-the-world sojourn during July and August.

Downey gets the Cup on Sunday

Posted by George James Malik June 19, 2008 06:36AM

According to the Orangeville Citizen's Dan Pelton, Red Wings forward Aaron Downey will bring the Stanley Cup to his hometown of Shelburne, ON this upcoming Sunday:

June 19, Orangeville Citizen: Mr. Downey says it's "something I dreamed of doing since I was a kid."

There are a number of festivities surrounding the visit of Lord Stanley's mug. At 12:30 p.m., there will be a parade starting from the Shelburne Arena. The parade will include, and also honour, the Shelburne novice league champions, the Honeywood novice rep Ontario champions, the Honeywood girls hockey club, the Shelburne Veterans junior lacrosse team, and figure skaters from the Honeywood and Shelburne communities.

The official ceremonies take place at Honeywood Arena at 3 p.m., followed by photo opportunities with Mr. Downey and the cup. Finally, from 3:30 p.m. through to 2 a.m. there will be food, live entertainment and a licensed beverage room at the arena, with all proceeds going to support minor hockey in Honeywood and Shelburne.

Mr. Downey will be joined by his teammate, defenceman Kyle Quincey, who was born in Dufferin County but spent the majority of his minor hockey days in Kitchener.

For all the local kids who have starry eyes aimed at the NHL, Mr. Downey implies that, first and foremost, they must have the desire to go all the way.

He said the Red Wings "play for the love of game. Whether it's against the Columbus Blue Jackets or the San Jose Sharks, they approach every game the same way. If you want to play in the NHL, you have to dream at it, work hard at it, and do it."
