toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 Housley could be possibly inducted? LOL HoF would be complete joke if he gets in. I understand what you mean, some defensemen are overrated because of their offensive stats, but there are only 3 defensemen in the history of the game that have more points than him....it's probably difficult to ignore that fact. It is also difficult to ignore the fact that he was totally atrocious in his own end. Even worse than Coffey, who was even better offensively. Housley sucks. MississippiWing 14 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 I lost a lot of respect for the HOF when they waved the waiting period for Gretzky then like the next year came out and said no one else would get waived and that everyone would have to wait. I know Gretzky is the "great one" but there are other players that were good enough to get in without waiting. I may be biased but I have to say Yzerman is definitely one. I mean his name like that of Gretzky is one that commands attention no matter where you go. Fans in other cities might hate the Red Wings but they all respect Yzerman. BigTex 1 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 (edited) edit: Pavel Bure would be one of my picks after Dino, Gilmour, and Larionov. I really believe Hockey should do it more like the NFL. It's a dangerous sport and people's careers can be ended in an instant. Don't look just at the all-time numbers, but were they one of the elite players in the sport for at least 4-5 years. That IMO should be enough and should be what the hall is about too. Obviously, I'm the kind of person that thinks Terrell Davis and Roger Maris should be in their halls. PaVel DaTsYuK fan13 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 Fetisov, is the only modern era player who had a substantial career outside of the NHL that I can think of, aside from him its all really NHL players (unless go back to the pre-NHL era). I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure Tretyak got into the HOF.
Nev 1,085 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 Hmmmmm, interesting selection. Its often said when debating potential inductees that its the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Very Good. To me, that is a list of very good players, but are they true HOFers? Every single one of them has 1 or more points you could argue against them - Bure didn't play long enough, Housley couldnt play D... Pick any 4 off that list and compare them to last year (Stevens, Messier, Francis, McInnis) and next year (Yzerman, Hull, Robitaille, Roy?) and you'll see what I mean. betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 Other than Larionov, to me that looks like a long list of definite maybes. I think you could make a case either way for each one of those players. (Though I haven't taken the time to look at them each individually.) Igor's induction will be awesome. Just keep piling on the accolades for the Wings In terms of the sheer amount of honors, trophies, and whatnot else bestowed on the Wings this season, it has to go down as possibly the Wings' greatest year ever. And it adds a little more luster to the 2002 season as they induct more and more of that team into the Hall.

Smells like baseless Gretzky bashing to me. I think you really need to get your facts straight. The 3 year waiting period wasn't waived for Gretzky only and then a decision made to never do it again. Do you realize that Gretzky was the 10th player to have this 3 year waiting period waived? Here's a list of the players that have had the period waived prior to Gretzky: - Lemieux - Orr - Howe - Belliveau - Sawchuk - Kelly - Lindsay - Richard - Clapper After Gretzky, the NHL decided to no longer waive the 3 year waiting period and I have no problem with that approach. Messier had to wait his 3 years too.
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 Whenever they become eligible, that class will be all Red Wings. Seriously, Oates, Damphousse, they were all great players, but you can't dismiss Dino, the Professor, and Housley.
lfd250 1 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 I too think Stevie Y is 2009. He left after the 05-06 Season. Which would be 2009. His party was 07.
C-TownWing 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 Little Ball of Hate. Yeah, ok, I know he's an EXTREME longshot at best, but I had to toss him a mention as my favorite Whaler ever, not to mention a former Wing. 500 goals, 1000 points, 2400 PIMs...not an entirely bad career. It's just a shame that he didn't play for high-profile/good teams (Wings, Rangers, even Dallas) until the end of his career.

GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 Funny how Brett Hull got pushed forward to next year just because of those several games that he played for the Coyotes since the lockout, even though he retired a few weeks into the season. If not for that, he would have been inducted last year most likely.
akustyk 84 Report post Posted June 17, 2008 for me it's Igor and Richter and then... way... way behind other players. Igor should've been there last year. Stevens before him is a joke and an insult to international fans for whom hockey is not only Canada or North America. truth being said of last year introduction only Messier stand his ground while McInnis and Francis could've easily been classified after Larionov. but it seems like Canadian understanding of "Hockey Hall of Fame" (which is clearly not the same as NA Hockey Hall of Fame) is different than mine. Larionov and Fetisov are Hall of Fame guys, hands down. I wonder how Canadian ppl would feel when Russians would start something called "Hockey Hall of Fame" and kept players like Mario Lemieux or Gordie Howe away while letting their own guys with fewer achievements in. because it's exactly what this canadian Hockey Hall of Fame does. blatant bias towards NHL (and WHA) achievements
hockeysattva 8 Report post Posted June 18, 2008 I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure Vladislav Tretiak got into the HOF. He was named to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989, the first Soviet player to be so honored and to be inducted without having played a game in the NHL. [wiki again] And I stand corrected although I think the sentiment I was carrying is still reflected.
