Sleeper UFA's

Recommended Posts

We all know the big names on the market which are available this year - but seeing as the Wings just won the cup and probably wont want to shake things up much, what guys do you think could benefit the team for cheap?

TSN UFA LIST

I have always been a fan of Martin Gelinas for some reason, and same goes for Micheal Peca - but I am not sure how much good they would be for the Red Wings.

I watched Curtis Glencross here in Edmonton for the last half of the season and he really impressed me. Big, tough, and I think he could be a decent power forward - maybe a Dan Cleary like project for the Wings and he would be cheap.

What guys do you like?

Owen Nolan and Alex Auld.

You know whats scary? I could see them offering peanuts for Cloutier whos recently been bought out.

Cloutier as a backup is not such a bad thing.

Cloutier as a starter = :puke:

I think you have bad taste.

Just saying.

Though I liked Peca maybe 10 years ago.

Right...

Well, care to make a suggestion?

Owen Nolan was '10 years ago' too, but did really well for the Flames this season. I am not looking for guys to come in and be top minute men - I am talking about depth. Kind of like the Drake signing last year.

And while I am sure most of their attention goes to the big players they want to sign, I DO think the Wings intently look at many UFAs - the low and the high end of the pool.

Well I don't think he's a sleeper by any means but I wouldn't mind if the Wings gave Ryan Malone a 3yr deal for about 3.5/yr. He can score, fight, seems to have lots of heart and would look great alongside a talented centerman like Filppula. He looks to be about the closest thing to a Shanny type player to come along in a while. Actually Ryan Clowe kinda reminds me of a young Shanny too but that's kinda irrelevant.

I'm sure management's keeping tabs on a few players. Overall, though, I can't see Holland going after anyone remotely interesting this summer -- unless it's a defenseman meant to replace Stuart. With the emergence of Franzen, our secondary scoring is set -- at least in Kenny's mind. We're probably going to lose Drake, but his spot will likely be given to Kopecky in that case. Helm may even make the lineup out of training camp. Point being, there won't be a perceived need for a guy like Nolan (again, at least in Kenny's mind). On the blue line, I think we either pick up a solid #3/#4 guy or no one at all. Certainly not a rugged journeyman-type depth guy.

And that's not even considering the various re-signing efforts Kenny needs to manage.

I don't mean to be a downer, but realistically, Leino is probably going to be the Wings' "big" offseason pickup -- and he probably won't even make the team....

Also, about Nolan -- the guy's had about 8,000 chances to come here over the last five seasons. That he hasn't means he doesn't want to come here and/or Holland doesn't want him.

For what it's worth, I've heard he's an ******* from several people who would know.

Not gonna happen. Malone is gonna get paid big by some team.

How much do you think he'll get and how long? Any thoughts on where he winds up?

I wouldn't be suprised if he gets paid up to $5 million per year on a 3 to 4 year contract. Every team is looking for a power forward in free agency (I don't know why, they never hit free agency). Ryan Malone is not a power forward, but he's physical support player that can score around 20 - 30 goals, so he'll get paid like one.
