12Newf 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2008 okay guys, i have seen way too many threads today about players who detroit will have no interest in whatsoever and i thought i would make one where we can discuss realistic additions that can be afforded. personally i think we need a winger to get sammy off the second line and these two guys might come at a decent price. michael ryder might be a good fit and has potential to score 25-30 goals. cory stillman has won 2 cups and could also be a good winger to take sammy off the second line. YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted June 24, 2008 (edited) Haha. You make a thread saying how youve seen too many threads about players Detroit will have no interest in whatsoever. And you come up with Ryder and Stillman?? Haha. Good one. Edited June 24, 2008 by YoungGuns1340
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted June 24, 2008 Take either. Stillman will probably go back to Carolina or Tampa Bay though, and would cost more.

Good one. im too lazy to look but please tell me you arent one of these people who are interested in marc denis, andrew raycroft, brad isbister, kyle wellwood... these guys are cheap and seem to have flown under the radar so far so either could make a good addition to our second line. stud_defenseman 1 Report post Posted June 24, 2008 Ryder had a great rookie year, then steadily declined into mediocrity. I'm pretty sure he was even a healthy scratch in the playoffs. I don't think he has turned his act around as of yet, maybe when his career is pretty much washed up we will offer him a tryout like cleary. Until then I wouldn't touch him. Ryders problem is inconsistency and a poor work ethic. I wouldnt have minded him on the Wings a few years ago, but the fact that the Habs didnt want much to do with him even AFTER he had just scored 30 goals tells you something. Gainey only re-signed Ryder last year because he missed out on other offensive talents. Case in point why he only signed the guy to a 1 year contract despite coming off back to back 30 goal seasons and now isnt even making the effort to re-sign him. As for the guys you mentioned, I wouldnt mind seeing either goalie come to the Wings training camp on a tryout basis, simply to push Jimmy Howard to play his best, especially since Howard has had a problem with the will to condition himself in the past. As for Isbister and Wellwood, Id put Ryder right up there with them. Meaning I dont want the Wings to take a second look at him. For Stillman, I wanted him on the Wings after he was with Tampa, and was disappointed when we didnt land him, but hes not going to take a one year contract. Similarly, hes not the direction the Wings should be going in. I like his offensive capabilities, and his work ethic is decent, but his physicality and checking leave something to be desired. Although it could be worse. Edited June 24, 2008 by YoungGuns1340
puckbags 863 Report post Posted June 24, 2008 Being from the west coast I watched Isbister play alot for the Canucks last year and to put it very nicely...HE IS F_CK_N (insert vowels as necessary) TRAGIC. If we didn't make a single move before the start of next season I would be ok with the team we have. Kenny isn't going to make a knee jerk reaction to sign someone just for s***s and giggles !! But I edited my point to make it more clear, if you were in fact responding to my post.
Ray1905 18 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 Ryder is a very bad choice for the Wings, he's got no heart. I live in Montreal I've seen him play a lot, there's a good reason why Carbonneau doesn't want him around anymore.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 Ryder appears washed up, and Stillman is always hurt. We don't need a gimp on this team, no matter how many points he puts up when he's healthy.
Yzerfan1999 81 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 I wouldn't take either of them.
SwedeLundin77 460 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 Stillman is intriguing, but again, he is injury prone and not physical at all. The teams we play in the West are a lot more physical than in the east so I would be concerned about him being easily injured.

I live in Montreal I've seen him play a lot, there's a good reason why Carbonneau doesn't want him around anymore. Ryder is probably a great choice for the wings cause he just has that touch ... let me start by stating that ryder did not really have a set up man ... second of all their was too much pressure put by the canadiens / coaching / management on him ... Im sure that if we put him with flip wow what a line .... franzen flip ryder ... Remember riebero (sorry if i wrote wrong), since you do watch canadiens alot how bad did he suck before joining the stars and becoming their best player

miller76 463 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 How about we don't sign anyone flying under the radar this offseason at all. Sign the guys they have, use the drafted talent, and play legos til training camp!!!

stud_defenseman 1 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 Put Ryder on with Cleary for a Newf line!!
Holmstrom96Screens 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 I wondered hypothetically if Detroit really could develop ryder like they did with Cleary when cleary wasnt a very good player either until a little while ago *cough* detroitisclearyshomenow *cough* speaking hypothetically of course cause it doesnt seem that detroit is too interested in him. Opie 308 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 I think the difference is, and correct me if I am wrong, Cleary was a training camp invitee and earned his spot, Ryder will want to have a spot, I don't think he would go to Traverse City and not have a job, unless like Cleary it is a desperation move to save his career. DatsyukownzU13 1 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 I like Ryder. He has a decent amount of offensive upside and brings a bit of grit as well. If we put him with some good forwards he could be a 20-30 goal scorer in the D. Corey Stillman is old, we already have enough older players.
