CrossCheck24 2 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 My roster, assuming Drake retires, Cheli, Downey and DMac return, no other changes. Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Homer Hossa-Franzen-Cleary Hudler-Filppula-Helm Samuelsson-Draper-Maltby/Abdelkader/Kopecky Lids-Rafalski Stuart-Kronwall Lilja-Lebda Chelios The Wizard Conklin/Howard Name me a team that lineup couldn't beat. Work in DMac and Downey as needed, cycle in Ericsson and the other GRers as available. The power plays/PK lines should be exceptional. Make the oppostion work for the full 2 mins every time. Canadian_Yzerman_Fan 7 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Wings have $4mil in cap space now. ok, so i've found 2 breakdowns of the red wings salary cap position now but they don't match this first link doesn't have hossa updated yet, but counting that would leave 2.5 Million left under the cap http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/team.php?team=DET the second is from this site and has 4 Million left... http://www.letsgowings.com/salarychart/index.php so one of these must be wrong, I'm just not sure where the difference is.... though I would assume the wings would have 4million rather than 2.5 just because I know holland is aware of his responsibilities still and always likes to have a little wiggle room in case of injuries (so trades can be made)
redwings1914 18 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 I forsee a trade most likely Meech/Lebda/Quincey for straight up picks.
Opie 308 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 I see Sammy and one of Meech Quincey Lebda for an enforcer.
StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 I forsee a trade most likely Meech/Lebda/Quincey for straight up picks. Why? none of them make over 1mil and Kyle is a RFA. One of them will be gone either way but probably not until the opener. Let Meech and Quincey fight for it and see who should stay and who should go.
gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 McCarty and Downey are going to sign 2-way deals and likely will spend a good amount of time in Grand Rapids on said deals so that shouldn't be too awful. Chelios will be about as cheap as he can be. Flip's a wildcard now, but hell, if Hossa buys into the system and wants to stick around and take a paycut, perhaps with another increase in the cap we can find a way to keep him past this year and at that point, Flip who? KrazyGangsta 79 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 if we don't resign samy next year and chelios retire we would have extra 2million .... Plus 2.5 from zettz money that 4.5 right there ... Plus cap goes up let's say 3 mil ... That's 7.5. For zettz for like 6-8 years meaning we could even resign Hossa again ... But we'd be sacrificingei either flip or franzen wich I wouldn't mind letting them go for hossa
RedFX 48 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Flip said money wasn't an issue, so hopefully we lock him up for 2-2.5 mil. For some reason tho, this Hossa deal tells me Kenny might be anticipating a huge offer sheet somewhere along the line. Get Mac for another year at .75. That leaves about 2 mil of wiggle room at the deadline or if we need an emergency signing/trade during the season. As far as Hank goes, Holland said he would wait til the free-agency cools down a bit before starting negotiations. Obviously Hossa's one-year deal signals Hank is still priority #1. Also room to keep Franzen. And who knows? Winning the Cup changes alot of people's perspective, maybe Hossa will stick around.
jawbreaker 0 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 I bet, that we will sign Flip for one year. Then re-sign Hank for 7M. After that we will wait until seasons is over, find out the new cap. Try to convince Hossa to take 7M long-term deal, and then re-sign Flip, or Mule.
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 I believe the other team will have to give us a few first rounders if they go after Flip, so it's not all bad. That'd only happen if Flip signed for like 6 million. In Flip's actual salary range we'd get like a 2nd and a 3rd.
eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 I know now why Ken Holland has often been left out of 'best GM' discussions. Because it would be unfair to everyone else to include him. It's like including Lidstrom in a discussion titled 'who is the best defenseman.' It's not really fair.
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 4.027 to get Downey, McCarty, Filpula and Chelios locked up. Mac and Downey league minimum each, so around 900k or 1mil for them Chelios for like 650$. 2,350,027$ left to spend..
russianswede919293 95 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 keep in mind that you can spend i think its eith 5-10% over cap. So they can retain everyone. Quincey, Lebda, Meech, Ericsson, Downey, McCarty, Chelios, Filppula And then sort it out at camp. say ericsson (non-waiver send down) and meech are the odd men out. They no longer count against cap. Then there is room for Samuelsson, Kopecky, Helm, Downey, etc to battle for the last 2 spots in camp, the rest are traded or GR bound and don't hurt the cap. No harm no foul Everyone stays We have Hossa for a year, we maybe win the cup again, everyone is happy.
cr00d 26 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 This more than likely means another year in GR for Howard (so his salary doesn't count against our cap), which is a bit disapointing, but once i see Hossa in red and white, i'll get over it. As for our line-up, I think alot of poeple are counting Leino out... he didn't sign with us to play in GR, he'll get every opportunity to play with the big club, and if he's as good as people say, I'm guessing he'll earn his spot. Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Homer Mule - Flip - Hossa Huds - Leino- Cleary Kopy - Draper - Sammy Mac/Matlby/Downey/Helm (thinking he'll stay in GR too since he wont have to clear waivers) Lids - Raf Kronner - Stuart Lilja - Lebda Chelios/Meech/Quincey Ozzie Ty * if we're down a goal late, Z - D - Hossa together to get us a quick one. Sick.
Valas19 50 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 How does Ville Leino fit into all of this? From what I've read if he doesn't make the NHL roster he can return to Finland whenever he pleases.
wingsownnhl43 14 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 (edited) Alright, with the Hossa signing, the Wings are just over 4 mil under the cap. We have 11 forwards, 7 defenseman, and 2 goalies signed, which means we need to sign 3 more players, preferably all forwards. Three more players with four million to maneuver, also Holland likes to be about 1 - 1.5 million under the cap. -My guess is that we will recall forward, Darren Helm for his contract, 598,000 thousand. This leaves us having to fill two spots with around 2.4 million to play with. (leaving out 1 mil for flexibility) -Sign either Darren McCarty or Aaron Downey for the minimum. (500,000) This leaves us with one spot, preferably Val, with 1.9 to spend. - Being that Val is in the 3.5-5 mil range, this leaves us in a tight situation, leaving us with only two possible solutions: Solution one- Lose Flip, collect the draft picks. (this is not my favorite, but may be reality.) Solution two- Clear cap space. The only tradeable salary/player is Mikael Samuelsson. I know he is the most hated Red Wings by the fans, but just know this idea does not come out of spite, it may be the only way to keep flip. Trade him for a dozen hockey pucks, clear his 1.2 mil salary giving us 3.1 to offer flip. Holmstrom - Datsyuk - Zetterberg Franzen - ??? - Hossa Cleary - Draper - Samuelsson Hudler - Helm - Maltby Kopecky-(McCarty/Downey) Lidstrom - Rafalski Kronwall - Stuart Lilja - Lebda Meech Osgood Conklin Regarding Chris Chelios. I know he wants to come back and play, but we simply can not afford him for anything more than the league minimum. The Red Wings are a loyal organization but they cant give him a contract at the expense of Filppula. Edited July 2, 2008 by wingsownnhl43

I think he is going to be a great player. But do I think he is worth 3-3.5 right now? Absolutely not.
