I think that he can contribute in strange ways. He can get the team fried up, but never, and I mean never do I wanna see this guy in a Wings uniform again.

Your thoughts??

I don't particularly hold much of a grudge against him. He had a nice feud with Cheli for a while when he was with Vancouver.

Interesting this topic is started this evening, as ESPN.com's Terri Frei put an article on Todd Bertuzzi today as well. Yeah yeah I know, ESPN doesn't know squat about hockey blah blah blah, for the love of god let's not go there for the millonth time...

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/stor...&id=3483260

How can you view Bertuzzi's recent signing as anything but a risk?

Frei's pretty much on target with a try to consider everythingl perspective. It starts out doom-and-gloom and that he wasn't the player he once was which is true, but he also talks about how it's time for few people who are still extremely bitter over the incident Moore to put it behind them five years later (though not forget it obviously) and move on, and that there's still a window of opportunity for him to meaningfully produce, since he's still in his early 30s with a fair amount of years left in him if he can finally stay healthy.

I'm rarely a bitter person and can easily move on from things more often than not so I have no ill will towards Bertuzzi whatsoever, in terms of his game or his "incident" or whatever else. Is he a risk with all the baggage/injuries? Yes. But, as stated in the article, does he still have potential to produce? Without question, although probably in a much lesser degree than his good Vancouver years. While I question how he will be welcomed in Calgary, I hope he can turn it around.

I was watching youtube clips and a simple search for hockey lead me to him. I started the topic and then went to check out ESPN for any Brett Farve news and found that article. Pretty interesting.

I feel sorry for him because the media took the Moore incident as the worst incident to ever happen in NHL history, when it simply wasn't. Albeit, it was pretty severe, but I can think of maybe 10 incidents that were at least worst in an intentional way. Because of this, it really turned Bertuzzi into a more fragile player, and I can guarantee he thinks about what he did daily, and I can guarantee that effected his overall game.

His whole style of play was dominating with his body and knocking guys away while he'd carry the puck. Nowadays, a combination of his back surgery, weight loss, and past demons have really prevented him from playing the way he used to. If he would go back to having those mean instincts again and not being afraid to get gritty, he could be as dominant as he once was.

All he really has to do is face demons and gain some weight back, and MAYBE just maybe he can be good again.

I think that the main reson that Bert was let go from the Ducks is that they just couln't afford to keep paying him the insane amount that he recived last season and stay under the cap. At one point (pre-Moore, injuries, etc...) he was one of the best power forwards in the game and played well in his short stint in Detroit. He still is a solid second / third line player and was solid aquisition for the Flames for a reasonable price. I hope that he can get things sorted out and get back to the player that he once was.

Two things:

1) As a result of the Moore incident, Bertuzzi will forever be afraid to play a physical game.

2) Bad back.

We saw some of the old Bertuzzi in game six against the Sharks last season. He drove the net; he hit hard; etc. When he drove the net, he was unstoppable, and it would take a penalty to stop him; and he had VERY good acceleration when he did it. Unfortunately, we didn't see that for the rest of the playoffs, and---based on his stats---I think it's safe to assume that the Ducks didn't see it all year either.

If Bert isn't playing his physical game and getting to the net, he's useless; in lieu of those qualities, he's just a player who is slow and bad defensively and doesn't have a very good pure shooter's touch.

i love how so people are so anti bertuzzi, but when the wings signed him "f*** ya berts awesome blah blah blah"

I think it is the whole "anyone can become nice and a great player if we make them wear a Wings jersey" mentality.

As a Wings fan who hates the Flames I love this pick-up. I can't tell if he's lazy, if he's still having injury issues, or if the assault thing is still affecting him, but he isn't a goal scorer and I can think of much better enforcers in the league. He's a waste of a roster spot.

Yes they do, otherwise they wouldn't be covering it on TV or on the Internet and hockey fans wouldn't read sources and journalist columns and the like from their site. The ridiculous hatred and bias against ESPN on this site continues to humor me every time. And before there are responses with, "Well are those the only standards that are needed to know hockey?" or "But so many other sources are better than them you dolt!" or "Why do you even watch ESPN?" I get it, so save your keystrokes on the typewriter.

Plus, Bert couldn't buy into the whole goon mentality of the Ducks team, lest it look like a step backward toward the Moore incident. He's at least a better off with Calgary (unless Iginla starts gooning it up).
