Did you read the entire thread? there's a clear implication from several posters that Downey should not be on the team, not specifically because of this incident, but citing this as an example of his play (which is clearly off base if the posters in question had watched any of the games last season or paid attention to Downey's attitude, the rest of the team's attitude towards him, and his general conduct on and off the ice).

 That's funny. I like oxymorons. And regular ones too. Maybe that's why I'm still reading this thread.

That's the spirit!

If it weren't for people telling us that this thread is too long, this thread would be pretty short.

Has anyone commented on the fact that Downey and Flip were road roomies last year? This could go for another 6 pages.

Excellent point. Let's launch a complete conspiracy theory! Perhaps Flip's young teen idol boy charms were too much for Downey and his latent tendencies came out one night and Flip spurned him. Filled with self questioning doubt on his identity Downey takes a cheap shot from behind as an expression of rage at rejection mingled with shame!

I belive they were even roommates up in Traverse City. I reading that during an interview with Filppula afer the hit Downey poped in and appolgised again and said he was going to make Flippula's bed for him.

Clever.

Doesn't change the fact that this thread is full of freaks who act like Downey broke Zetterberg's back intentionally and than circled the ice celebrating about it. You'd think Filppula was captain of the team and Downey was a hired gun from Nashville the way people blew this thread out of proportion.

What if instead of a jammed thumb it was a broken wrist, feasible seeing as the thumb and wrist are really close to each other, would you think it was no big deal still.

No one is saying Downey needs to be suspended for life and sent to the KHL, what was said is he needs to think about what he is doing when it comes to hitting teammates in a scrimmage. Boarding is dangerous whether it be a teammate or an opponent.

These are the exact same hits that he is on the team to exact revenge for.

Downey is a very replaceable part to this team, Flip on the other hand is not as easily replaceable.

The other point people are making is the exact one you just personified. If this was Sammy people would freak out, yet the Downey lovers are on here in numbers pissed off that some one even questioned Downey's hit. And what is it that they use as justification, well Flip wasn't hurt so what is the problem.

Sammy can be bashed, berated, trashed and anyone speaking up in his defense doesn't watch hockey or know what they are talking about. HOWEVER, question a hit (that was without a doubt a stupid hit during training camp scrimmages) from Downey and look at the people claiming the questioners are blowing it out of proportion.

The problem with the hit is that even if it were against an opponent it is a stupid hit and the reason the Wings are so high on this guy as a fighter is that he doesn't do these types of things. He needs to be a smart fighter/enforcer in order to stay on this roster. Boarding anyone, especially a teammate, does not show great mental strength.

That is what we are pointing out here, but sorry for saying anything negative about Downey, I should have known better, don't question the actions of a fighter on this board.

If it was a serious injury, I would be justifiably livid just like anyone else on this site. My point is simply that this isn't representative of Downey's play style or his attitude, and it was obviously an accident.

The team is past it, time to let this thread die.

Accident or not it was a stupid play!

Especially in training camp!

When you see a guys numbers and he is against the boards you do not hit him.

Downey was lucky to not have hurt Flip, Sammy was unlucky to hurt Cleary yet Sammy was bashed for months for breaking Cleary's jaw!

To paraphrase Doc Holiday:

"(This boards) Hypocrisy knows no bounds!"

Brutal...a tale of two lovers gone wrong.

That's because Sammy was on thin ice already. That was the icing on the cake. Downey has not done anything wrong the whole time he's been here. Also, his job is to hit people and play tough. Sammy's job description has never included missing shots off of people's faces.
