Cherry's At It Again...

Recommended Posts

Don Cherry talking about some issues at hand for the upcoming season. To summarize:

- Ovechkin will be worse, he wont "be running around like a bull in a china shop like he did."

- Wings should repeat if you're a betting man.

- European expansion is bad, but hopefully it happens so Euros go home.

- Tampa Bay is most improved. Phoenix, Edmonton, and Calgary are improved.

- Philly, Pittsburgh, Vancouver are going to struggle (Van probably not a playoff team).

Although a few of the things above I maybe can't debate too much, I am firmly of the belief that Cherry is completely off his rocker.

Theses are the only two he is wrong about.

I didn't read this article, but I'm assuming it is the same as another I read on the way to work today, which had a terrible title (Cherry slams Ovechkin.....this wasn't the title, but something along those lines). The reason the title was terrible was because Cherry's comments were not dissing Ovechkin at all. All he did was state his opinion that Ovechkin will not be as dominating this year as last year, he'll have a hard time scoring 65 goals this year, guys will focus on him more, etc. These are all very fair comments and opinions. The guy scored 65 goals last year, there is a reasonable chance he won't score that much this year.

Also, he won the scoring title last year and the vast majority of expert predictions I have read so far is that Crosby scores more points than Ovechkin this year. All Cherry stated was that Ovechkin likley won't dominate the scoring like he did last year, which is basically what all the other experts are saying as well, if they are all picking Crosby to win the scoring title.

Maybe it gets spun a little differently because it's Cherry.

I'll re-interate, I didn't read this article, so maybe what I am saying is off base and maybe Cherry did bash the guy, but I doubt it.

No, you are right. Really the only deeply opinionated part of the article is the part that he talks about Europeans. The ida that Ovechkin will not live up to last seasons standard is believable. I just made the comment because I thought it would catch people's eye.

I recommend reading the article before you base your opinion off of the OP's bullets.

Some important quotes that would be useful, btw I hate Cherry!

Ovechkin scored a league-leading 65 goals and collected 112 points last season, earning the young Russian the Hart and Lester B. Person Awards.

But Cherry doubts he can repeat his magic this year.

"He's not going to get any better and I would be surprised if he does as well as he did last year," said Cherry. "He was doing things (last year) he shouldn't. He was cutting into the middle.

"There are going to be a lot of guys waiting for him this year. He's not going to be running around like a bull in a china shop like he did."

Asked to pick a Stanley Cup winner, Cherry sees no reason why the Red Wings can't repeat as champions.

"I don't see anything tripping them up along the way," he said. "I see no weaknesses in them at all. If you are betting, you have to bet on Detroit again this year."

Cherry said the player who could be the future Canuck captain is 18-year-old centre Cody Hodgson, Vancouver's first-round draft pick in June.

"This kid, everywhere he's been, he's been a captain," said Cherry. "I will say he will be the captain of the Vancouver Canucks someday. He is sort of like Steve Yzerman. I can't say anything higher than that."

Cherry also scoffed at the idea of the NHL expanding into Europe.

"They (teams) don't draw very well over there," he said. "They don't charge anything for their tickets. In Finland, do you think they are going to pay $150 for tickets and they're going to paying guys $9 million?"

Cherry couldn't resist giving the league's European players a shot.

"I hope they do expand to Europe because they will all stay over there," he joked. "That would be really great as far as I'm concerned."

Are you implying that I didn't make accurate bullets (I love arguing with you)?

No, you are trying too hard to argue with me.

You even admitted that your subtitle was written in a way to catch people's attention and draw them to your post, what are you Jemele Hill now, do whatever you can to draw people in!

I pointed out that people may want to read the things I posted instead of seeing your subtitle, and think Cherry was saying AO is actually s***ty.

You know creating post with the intent to deceive or incite posters is against forum policies, and seeing as Cherry said nothing close to AO is s***, I would say you are walking a fine line.

But that is just me and I am not a mod!

If you want to argue with me, trust me I am on here everyday and my opinions are usually not super popular on here, so bide your time and I am sure we will disagree again!

To be fair, this is what writers do. If you go and find the same article elsewhere, the title is very deceiving as well.....likely to draw readers. I'll have to dig up some examples.

Edit: okay, here are some examples:

Don Cherry's low expectations for Ovechkin, European expansion

Cherry: Ovechkin won't be so great in 2008-09

Cherry: Ovechkin won't be as good

Grapes sour on Ovechkin

Canucks and Ovechkin draw fire from Cherry

Are you serious? Guy scores 52+54 as a rookie, has a "down" year of 46+46 , and obliterated the league for 65+47 this most recent season. And only NOW guys are going to start focusing on him? Good luck!

Not to mention that the same argument can be made for Crosby. Extra attention, reasonable assumption he won't hit 120 again, etc...

I'll agree that 65 goals and the Art Ross is a long feat for anyone, but you can't deny that Cherry goes for shock value at all times (whether he truly believes it or not).

definitely a misleading title. cherry really doesnt bash him at all and i can remember him singing AO's praises a bunch of times so i really think he was just offering an opinion a lot of other people share. he only takes a shot at euros and the reporter admits he was laughing as he said it.

Every expert blows Crosby as often and long as possible. Yet he's been outperformed by Ovechkin 2 out of 3 years.

People say Crosby's got no where to go but up but don't say the exact same about Ovi?!? That's retarded. Ovi's potential to improve is equal to Crosby's. They're a year apart in age and zero years apart in NHL experience.

Ray Ferraro commented today that Cherry indeed never praises Europeans. "He's never praised Nick Lidstrom for crysing out loud and Lidstrom's won 74 Norris Trophy's!" I thought that was funny.

I agree with everything he says

ovechkin had such a great year last year It'd be tough to match, now that his team is good, he'll find it hard to score, other teams will take games VS caps more seriously. Instead of going in thinking "we'll win 5-2, so who cares if AO scores both of those goals, it doesnt matter, we'll win" they will think "we have to stay on AO all game if we hope to win"

and expansion into europe with hopes to build an "equal" league on par with the NHL IS stupid, however I dont think that is whats required, these european clubs want the NHL to become an world wide ubrella brand that will protect hockey in europe. The NHL steals all the talent from europe, and now with the KHL the talent that remains is subpar, and makes for unentertaining hockey. Essentially what would be ideal is a system that mirrors a sport like soccer, imagine an MLS like hockey league for all of europe. Instead of these small little country leagues, you would have only like 30 potentially, with each team having a lot more talent, making for more entertaining hockey. And when one of these teams develops a good player, there is a system in place to compensate those teams when they come to north america. Or any other league. I mean atleast the NHL has the lure of high salaries to entise players to play here instead of the KHL, these european markets are being raped by the KHL and they are powerless to stop it. Their only other option is to join the KHL but NO ONE whats to do that because these russians are very shaddy, and untrustworthy. There is talk of finland, denmark and sweden joining together and forming a league with the top teams from each league.

My point wasn't to suggest all the experts are right, I was just pointing out that many, many experts share a similar opinion, so I see this as singling out Cherry because he's Cherry.

Yep.

It's hard to keep up that type of production year in/year out when you are one of the best. It would be natural at some point for your stats to take somewhat of a decline.

I didn't read any of what Cherry had to say, but I highly doubt he said anything close to implying that Ovechkin was a hack or terrible. Because it is him though and his negative bias more towards European players to start (whether it is legitimate or not) and more pro towards North Americans or "rugged" type players, along with him usually being more outspoken, he's going to get ripped on more because of it.

Cherry is just being Cherry. Loud and opinionated. Annoying sometimes? Yes, but nothing to get a hissy fit over.

I hope people dont give you s*** for talking bad about cherry, last season I got ripped a lot for saying I hate him and his views on hockey. Unless Ovechkin's leg falls off, he will be the top 3 in scoring this year and every year.

isnt ovi the only player in nhl history to win 4 major individual trophies? I'd say that thats gonna be really hard to accomplish this year.

And as much as i hate to say it, i think crosby will be better this year.

and have you seen crosby's new "is this the year" commercial? losing pissed him off last year...you wouldnt like him when he's hungry! ....i mean angry.
