David 2 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 Considering VS broadcasts are in HD, puck tracking is utterly worthless. If you can't follow the puck in HD, you should consider getting a pair of Uncle Junior Soprano glasses.
T.Low 1,011 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 Ridiculous. Dumbing down the spectator side of the game to increase fan base. Side note: As GOD is my witness, back in the '80's when the puck tracker was installed, my brother's father in law wonderred aloud if the players on the ice were distracted from it. No s***, I kid you not.

T.Low 1,011 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 Back in the 80's? Wow, I guess it was the '90s! I've been known to place the past in the wrong time slots. Gets me in trouble with the wife every now and then.
selkie 10 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 As long as it's not during live action, I kind of like the idea. There are always a handful of times during a game when the puck is up along the boards in such a location that the cameras don't pick it up properly, and every once a while you get the puck coming out of that 'nowhere' as part of an interesting play. So if you use the glo-puck technology during that little bit of time it's otherwise hidden, it can be useful in understanding said series of interesting events. Just please let the 'sperm tail effect' on hard slap shots stay back in the 90s where it belongs.
T.Low 1,011 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 No, don't like it at all. Keeping track of the puck is a fundamental and significant part of the game. Its not necessarily suppossed to be easy, and I don't think it needs to be made easier for the fans. "Where's the Biscutt" is an essential part of the game, so much so that it acutally has created a job for Tomas Holmstrom. I like having to look at the players reactions on the ice and estimate the puck progression at the times when I do loose the puck watching on TV. If its used in a telestrator "clinic" type environment, to show a play or explain something, yes, thats totally different.
stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 lame in every capacity. All it ever did was distract from the game, a real hockey fan (or someone even learning the game) should learn how to follow the play, not the puck... you miss SOOO much (developing plays, special moves, the little extras, etc....) when you're forced to look at the puck by that damn thing. hate it. hoogs 8 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 I actually really like it for replays and analysis. Im as die hard as the rest of you, but I dont mind using technology every once in awhile. Now if it was during the entire game I would be PISSED
BigWinston 15 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 I think it's a good thing but not in live play. I haven't been watching hockey long enough to remember how they did it back in the 90's, but have seen it in soccer. They used to (but dont anymore) use it for speed of a shot on goal, trajectory, tracing the ball path line into the goal which showed swerve, deflections and pin-point whether it crossed the line. I think the same information applied to hockey using this technology would make the intermissions more enjoyable!

I think the same information applied to hockey using this technology would make the intermissions more enjoyable! I don't have a problem with it either for replays, etc. If you know hockey, the puck isn't hard to follow, but it's a lot more difficult these days compared to 20 years ago. The game is so different today that it resembles pin-ball hockey at times. With the composite sticks and kevlar-type equipment, this thing bounces around like a jackrabbit on speed. It's not a bad thing for replays so you can see if it's been deflected or tipped.
wingsgirl001 983 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 Ugh, not this again As long as it's not during live play then that's fine I suppose. I can see how it would be useful during replays and such.
MaynardJKeenan 1 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 Hey, that glow puck helped get me into hockey. I was born in Michigan, but I grew up in Florida. In the mid 90's the Pistons weren't doing good and I seen something on ESPN about the Wings going to the finals. They got swept that year, which I didn't watch, but I started following them a little bit the following year. The glow puck and the robots on Fox really got me interested. I've been a die hard fan ever since. Finding the Wings was the best thing, sports wise, that ever happened. I grew up on footall and basketball, and hockey, although I've never played it, is by far the best sport on earth. Being a long time Lions fan, it's really nice to have one team that does things the right way. Anyways, just saying, the glow puck thing ain't all bad. Ummm...not that I like or want puck tacking...but we're just watching the game, we're not the players. :| It's not supposed to be a skill... Unless you're that much of a 'hockey elitist" that you think people should have to pass skills test just to have the priviledge of watching a hockey game, god forbid they dirty your impeccable hockey fan aura. Anomalously 0 Report post Posted October 12, 2008 It's a black puck on a white surface. It's not tough to follow. If there's five guys clawing at the same corner of the boards, it's there. That's the only time it's difficult to see it.
