The Mule 0 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 As per Bruce MacLeod: "Coach Mike Babcock said right after tonight's win that Ty Conklin will start again, Monday -- the first time this season that the No. 2 netminder will get back-to-back starts. Asked why, Babcock answered, "Because I want him to." Babcock later termed the second start a reward for Conklin's performance. Incidentally, Conklin's wife, Erika, will give birth to the couple's third child tomorrow. For a week, the Conklins will have three kids under the age of 3." Outsider 42 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 Hopefully this will light a fire under Ozzie's arse. He hasn't been playing as badly as his stats indicate, but he can definitely be better. Much better.
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 This is just what Ozzie needs, some competition. Should get him going, and it gives Ty a good chance as well.
Shaman 713 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 This is just what Ozzie needs, some competition. Should get him going, and it gives Ty a good chance as well. Amen, ive been saying that since the Pittsburgh game, Ozzy needs to compete for his #1 job to keep him on his toes and make him play on his top level. Outsider 42 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 (edited) This is just what Ozzie needs, some competition. Should get him going, and it gives Ty a good chance as well. From your keyboard straight to the ears of the Hockey Gods...... As an aside, Oz sounds good and pi$$ed in this write up From MLive. He looked nasty mean against New Jersey last week, and I thought he had a fantastic game. He looked good against Vancouver, too. The Wings didn't play particularly well defensively in either of those games, but Oz stood tall for them. He stole the NJ Game outright. Unfortunately, all it takes is that CRAP game against the Pittsburgh Crysby's and that third (kicked in) goal by Pettinger (Prospal) to make folks forget about those games. That's the nature of the beast. Hopefully he IS good and pi$$ed. He always plays better when he's got a chip on his shoulder. Oh, and congrats to the Conklins! KrazyGangsta 79 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 Well props to conklin, this guys really good ... he reminds me a lot like roloson most of his career his been a backup ... give this guy a chance and you will see the things he can do ... Right now = Conklin > Osgood Career = Conklin < Osgood No doubt I love osgood, I hope he gets going again ... but if he can't do it, I know conklin can. puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 Good deal. I appreciate Babcock's "because I want him to" attitude. Get the job done, Babs! Congratulations to Ty and his wife, too.
RedWingsRox 614 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 (edited) Hope Conk wins one for the newborn! Weird ... Ozzie is like 7-1-3 and I know his stats are pretty bad and his play as of late isn't anywhere near where it can/needs to be but, on any other team, those W-L-OTL numbers would be revered. Yellowknife Redwing 57 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 Glad to see this move. I've been thrilled with every one of Ty's performances this season and Osgood has looked downright terrible thus far (albeit with intermittent flashes or pure brilliance). Nothing would make me happier than to see our goaltending tandem play off of each other a la Oz/Dom last season. A little healthy competition never hurt anyone, eh boys? HockeyCrazy3033 168 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 Good to hear. That will get Oz to start playing like we know he can again.
Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 Conk has shown he deserves the start. He has played very well. Osgood could use the time to cool off and relax.
digitaljohn88 4 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 (edited) Maybe Babcock has finally figured out that Ozzy plays better on the road, so he's letting Conks have the home game this week. Just look at these stats... [Osgood 07-08] Edited November 15, 2008 by digitaljohn88

Ozzy is gonna kick himself in the ass and we're gonna get this thing back on track, mark my words. The guy has the perfect attitude you want from your goaltender, calm and collect most of the time, but takes his performance personal and knows when it isn't up to snuff. Maltby turned his game around dramatically since being benched a couple games, hopefully Ozzy comes back with a vengeance.
AtomicPunk 296 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 I have Osgood in my fantasy league and I have been starting Tim Thomas of late because I never know when we are going to have the goalie carousel turn again. Ozzie better get himself right quick, or it's gonna be like Minnesota where one goalie plays one night and the backup the next. He is a #1 and he better start playing like one. haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 I thought Conklin was fighting the puck a bit last night, but overall pretty solid. As others have said, hopefully this lights a fire under Ozzy to regain his form from last season. Hopefully the rest of the team will too.
Reds4Life 51 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 (edited) Finally. Osgood has been terrible so far, he lets in very soft goals. This might provide him with the motivation he needs! Edited November 15, 2008 by Reds4Life
The Mule 0 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 This can only result in good things. With any luck, Conklin will continue to shine, and Ozzie will get on track.
Guest CaliWingsNut Report post Posted November 15, 2008 My guess is that this is about conk and not ozzy... He's having a kid, it's a fun time, it's also a stressful time. I think babcock is testing him, seeing that this is likely the highest pressure time for him of the year before the playoffs.
dicksmack 33 Report post Posted November 15, 2008 Babcock is just doing his thing... unless there is something that isn't being made public about Ozzie, It's pretty obvious he is trying to get a competition going and well he should.

ben_usmc 253 Report post Posted November 16, 2008 Good deal. I appreciate Babcock's "because I want him to" attitude. Get the job done, Babs! Congratulations to Ty and his wife, too. That's funny because when Rod M. says it about the Lions everyone hates him for not giving reasons. I agree with you though, it probably has to do with the fact that one actually knows what the hells he's doing and has had just a tiny bit of success, while the other well....
