mackel 767 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 Pray the defense decides to play before April. Every team has defensive lapses, and many have goalies capable of making saves when it happens... the wings unfortunately don't.
shoe 165 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 HASEK!!! I kid, I kid! One thing I miss about the guy was if he had a bad night you know he would get all mad at himself and come back with a great night afterwards.
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 You can blame the defense for a few goals, but hell, you think Anderson or Thomas or Luongo have great defense behind them? Sure the D isn't as good as last year (for some unexplainable reason) but maybe the great D before was just covering for the Osgood? Now that the Defense can't bail him out, we see the true goalie he's become. It's not going to get better. It's just November has turned into it's just December, what's next? It's just March? It's just April? Detroit has the worst goalie in the league, by far. He hasn't bailed us out once. It's time for a real #1 goalie. Either stick with Conklin for a month or two, or make a trade. We have tons of players we could easily trade to get a 2-3 million dollar goalie. Versus brought up a very telling visual of shots blocked. The Av's blocked everything in the middle zone. As far as I can tell, Detroit rarely blocks anything. And when they do block a shot, it's usually by accident. Well no goalie has a defense BEHIND them, but yeah, actually Thomas has damn near the best defense in front of him in the league. Luongo, on the other hand, is one of the best goalies in the league, and no one is saying Osgood is that, and Anderson is doing what many career back-ups have done in their day - riding the high of being the hero for a struggling starter as a career back-up. digitaljohn88 4 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 So, if every defensive breakdown is supposed to result in a goal, what is the point of even having a goalie? I could see if he were getting shelled every game, but this unacceptable. The Wings are constantly playing in a deficit from the first 2 - 3 minutes a game, making them play the other teams game. Hell, they might as well have just kept Manny Legace, this is the same s*** as 2005-06. He's always been as good as defence is, when his defence struggles, he sucks. Hence he didn't do so hot in other uniforms. No, every defensive breakdown should not result in a goal. But I'm a bit tired of seeing breakout passes come back as 2on0's. mackel 767 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 yep, defense is the problem. picture this....you go into work everyday and for 3 weeks the people responsible for getting the report on your desk fail. epic fail. you need the report to counter the competitions advance in your industry. epic fail for you. unemployed cuz your support team blows. yeah, folks are grumbling about how everyone is lazy and they suck, but you are out the door cuz they scored. not saying for a minute that it's NOT still up to ozzie to stop the puck, but how demoralizing to have yor support crew stand around with thier heads up thier ass, acting like pylons. that said....i hope they get it together before flying out west. edit: left a pretty important word out the first time You can look at this in reverse too, why bust your ass for a guy who's just going to lose the report before he passes it along. How demoralizing it must be to think if you're not damned close to perfect on every shift you'll be down a goal, talk about walking on egg shells!!
ComradeWasabi 109 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 What do you do? Wait, no, no, no, that's not right. Yeah, there we go.
thegoalie030 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 Yeah, 2 regulation losses is way too many for a goaltender to have at this point of the season. Lets set up Red Bird with him and Stuart and point it to Florida so that we can get someone that has never made it past the Wings in the playoffs! That should fix everything, especially the higher salary Vokoun has; pay more get more right? OR do we really want his health issues? Heck, both of the Detroit goaltenders are struggling lets dump the both of them right, they MUST be the problem for the slow start this season? Or maybe we need to get someone that will steal a game to get the Cup like Kipper or Luongo. Oops sorry that was another ridiculous thread from last year when he was selected to the All Star game and given the extension.
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 I'm all for the big hug theory, but I my solution is entirely different and more exciting for the struggling goalie. Give the struggling goalie a private room with some dark lights, some good Vodka, a stripper and a few lap dances (but nothing more ), and the struggling goalie will be feeling like a new man and better about himself assuming he's not too drunk from the Vodka. Sorry, I was going to go with a combination of both a struggling defense and goaltender as the culprits as I don't like playing the scapegoat game. However, the middle of the road take is pretty bland sometimes so I often use bad humor and sarcasm for some of my posts and solutions. *shrugs*

Outsider 42 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 For God's sake. Osgood is struggling, but he'll pull it together. I promise. Geez, all you yahoo's here screaming for him to be taken out behind the woodshed and shot were the same lot who were absolutely certain that, in the event of an injury to Hasek, were the Wings to be "forced" to rely on Osgood last Post Season, they'd surely be DOOOOOOOMED!!! Everyone get a nice, long, exultant look at the perty, sparkly things Mr. I handed out a week or so ago? He'll pull it together. And when he does, there won't be a ONE of you who will acknowledge it. Not a ONE of you. It will be the Defense, or better Team play, or weaker opponents, or some other such non-sense. And every ONE of you will do nothing but whine about how "bad" he was to start the Season, regardless of how well he happens to be playing. Y'all ARE Wings fans, are you not? As if you've NEVER seen Osgood struggle. Never. And as if you've never noticed that Oz tends to follow up a great statistical Season with a mediocre start to the next Season, only to turn it on by mid-Season. Look it up, folks. It's a fact. Again.....Oz will be fine. For all your whining like a little girl with sand in her tootie, reminding everyone how "mediocre" Osgood's always been.... You'd think you'd be MORE concerned about a 6 time Norris Winner who can't seem to get HIS Game back on track, rather than a goaltender who, (according to most), is doing nothing more than being exposed for the "average" 'tender he's always been. It's Ozzie's second full game in the new gear, after having worn it ONLY in practice thus far this Season. His glove work sucks. He'll get under control.... Again....I promise. <sheesh>
Outsider 42 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 You can look at this in reverse too, why bust your ass for a guy who's just going to lose the report before he passes it along. How demoralizing it must be to think if you're not damned close to perfect on every shift you'll be down a goal, talk about walking on egg shells!! Alright, then....I'll go you one better.... Explain to me how it is that the Team which apparently has no interest in "busting ass" for Oz Wins MORE Games with him in net than they do with the "other goalie", (Babcock's phrase), who, according to you, is playing BETTER? You're reaching. And "damned close to perfect"? What? What games are YOU watching? That turn-over which led to the two on NONE about a MINUTE into the Game tonight..... How "close to perfect" would you rate that play? On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being perfect. Kronwall's screen on the first goal by the Coyotes? "Closer" to perfect? How 'bout the sloppy line change which led to the Doan breakaway? "Almost" perfect?

Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 I had the privilege of seeing him live tonight and he did not seem comfortable at all. He didn't control his rebounds, he wasn't getting in front of pucks efficiently (there were a couple times when the defense bailed him out). Osgood says he is close to where he wants to be mentally, but you can see in how he carries himself during the game his mental toughness is gone. Unfortunately the only way to efficiently remedy that is to have a stellar night, which I don't see happening any time soon.

Anderson: 8-3-3 .940 SV% 2.15 GAA, with a not so talented team playing in front of him. As far as I can remember he's always been a solid backup goalie. If Anderson continues to play the way he is, Vokoun will be shown the door. Teams cannot continue to pay players 5mil to sit on the bench or play below average when they do play. With todays economy, I am betting Vokoun is on the trading block soon.
XxGoWingsxX 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 you keep playing him until he gets better or put Conklin in as a starter and call up Howard... It looks to me that the fire in almost everybody isn't there. We're coasting in on the backcheck...playing weak on the forecheck, not battling enough in the corners to pick up loose pucks, and our breakout? Pshhh, lidstrom even looks to be making sloppy breakout passes...which lead to bad turnovers in the neutral zone. I cant tell u how many times i've been screaming at my tv cuz the other team is deep in our zone and instead of covering the guy in the slot, someone will just be standing back waiting for the puck to magically come to them. Yes ozzie has looked bad but then again, he's not really being given much of a chance now is he?
XxGoWingsxX 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 further, i've only seen about 3 players on our team playing with any consistency. Hossa, Franzen, and Hudler...i know franzen went on a little cold streak but i at least notice him in the games. Dats and Z even if they don't score , i usually notice them in the game standing out....almost nobody has had standout game to me other than the 3 I mentioned
RockyMountainWingGal 108 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 I've been avoiding goalie threads until now. I've been patient with our GT, but at this point something is very wrong with Osgood. I have been asking myself this - did Osgood empty the tank so to speak in last year's playoffs? Was his performance at such a high level which he cannot reach again? I've re-watched some of last year's PO games - and this is not the same guy in net. Now I hope he just has an extra-long Stanley Cup hangover, but I'm starting to worry. I'm hoping he improves and I still think it will happen, but I am asking myself in the back of my mind if I saw the best of Ozzie last spring??
