Actually, I just thought of a couple different proposals:

Carolina @ Boston at Fenway Park

*Northwest team* vs. Phoenix at Canad Inns Stadium

Complete with one-off Whalers/Jets uniforms. Both cases are going to have appeal to solid hockey markets and nostalgic team revivals while also offering a great way to integrate sunshine teams into the WC. In the same vein you could have a recreation of the Battle of Quebec with Colorado vs. Montreal though its a less likely scenario given that the Canadiens have already been in an outdoor game.

When the NHL does things like this they like to have a poster boy

The penguins have been done

The wings have been done

Montreal has been done

The kids in Chicago have been done.

looking at the league and the big name superstars Im thinking the next big name is Ovechkin, Washington actually has a handful of posterboys so Im putting my money on Washington but it wont be in Washington.

Thinking Washington vs Toronto at http://bmofield.com/

or Washington vs Boston at Fenway

Bruins/Rangers at Fenway Park would be pretty epic.

A game out in Colorado would be pretty awesome too. Who would be best to play the Avs though?

What about Ave's vs Wild

Though it would be an interesting venue. I doubt anyone would watch. Watching a game with the Wild playing, is like watching championship under water basket weaving! I think the Aves versus a more exciting competitor would be okay.

The problem the past couple years of NYC to DC is the weather around this time really hasn't supported a winter classic. Hell, we jumped into the mid 60s between xmas and new years.

After hearing the reports that the Las Vegas strip (??) and the Rose Bowl (???) would be possible locations, PTI on ESPN brought up the idea of letting the Capitals host it and the site would be at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The pool is long enough and wide enough to fit the rink and I think it would be a great place to host it. The seating issues and sitelines could be an issue but it would be sweet to watch.

I feel sorry for the goalie that has to stare at that big phallic symbol for 2 periods.

I love this idea... just listened to the PTI Podcast this morning and I think this would be awesome. My only issue would be that they would probably want the Caps to play Pit and I am sick and tired of the NHL's fascination with Sid the Kid.

By the way, Tony and Wilbon had a spirited debate on who is better, Sid or Ovy? Wilbon said Alex and I agree completely. The NHL has hitched their wagons to Sid and will be in it for the long haul I think.

You could get the Flyers vs the Caps and avoid the whole Crosby fascination.

This sounds pretty off the wall, but seeing this is more or less a TV production anyway, why not 9 A.M. on the Ice Sheet at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York, right after the Today Show. The whole show could be a build up to the game outside. The players would probably not find it cool. But there might be a channel surfing quality to this. I think a 70 year old suburban grandmother who'd never heard of Wayne Gretzky would stop and watch, wondering what the hell was going on.

I had that same idea, I think an NHL game at Rockefeller Plaza would be pretty kick ass.
